Abstract
PURPOSE: To recover the titled compounds readily, by bringing a gas mixture containing methacrolein and a small amount of methacrylic acid into contact with xylene, etc. used as an absorbing solvent so that methacrolein and methacrylic acid are absorbed, followed by separating the absorbing solution by distillation.
CONSTITUTION: A mixture gas containing methacrolein and a small amount of methacrylic acid is sent from the pipe 4 to the absorption tower 5, and an absorbing solvent of xylene and/or ethylbenzene is fed from the pipe 7 to the absorption tower 5 where the mixture gas is brought into contact with the absorbing solvent so that methacrolein and methacrylic acid are absorbed into the solvent which is sent to the methacrolein recovering tower 9. Methacrolein having a purity not less than 99.5wt% is recovered from the top of the tower and it is recycled through the oxidation reaction system for use. A bottom product containing a small amount of remaining methacrylic acid is partly circulated through the pipe 12 to the absorption tower 5, and the rest is sent from the pipe 13 to the extraction tower 14 for mathacrylic acid where methacrylic acid is extracted and the extracted solution is sent to the solvent recovering process 17. After methacrylic acid is separated, the solvent is recycled from the pipe 18 to the absorption tower 5 for use.
