Abstract

PURPOSE: To reduce the cost for the preparation of methacrylic acid, by circulating the dilute aqueous solution of acetic acid by-produced in the methacrylic acid preparation process to the reaction step, or by supplying the solution to the quenching step of the produced gas, or by utilizing the solution as an adsorbent of methacrolein from the residual gas of the produced gas.
CONSTITUTION: In the preparation of methacrylic acid by the vapor-phase catalytic oxidation of isobutylene, t-butanol, methacrolein, isobutylaldehyde or isobutyric acid, or their mixture with an O2-containing gas, a part of the by-produced aqueous acetic acid solution is (A) recycled to the oxidation reaction step, or (B) supplied to the quenching step for the quenching of the gas produced by the oxidation reaction thereby separating the gas into the gaseous part and the aqueous solution containing the high-boiling compounds and a small amount of methacrolein contained in the produced gas, or (C) recycled to the step for the recovery of methacrolein from the residual gas of the produced gas to absorb and separate the methacrolein, which is at least partly returned to the oxidation step, or (D) two or three of the above processes are combined together.
