Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve the lifetime and responsiveness of an electrochromic display element by laminating a color developing layer having two special layers upon a display electrode thereby to protect the electrode.
CONSTITUTION: An optically transmissive substrate 9 is equipped thereon with a displaying transparent electrode, and a cermet film 11 containing WO3 and Pt is sputtered in high frequency upon the display portion while acting as a first electrochromic EC layer. An insulating film 12 of WO3 is vacuum-evaporated thereon as a second EC layer. The electrode 10 other than the corlor developing layer is protected with the transparent insulating layer 13 which is applied with silicone varnish and dried. The substrate 14 is vacuum-evaporated with an opposite electrode 15 and an insulating film of WO3 thereby to form an opposite side color developing layer 16 which has been slightly colored in advance by the power supply through the electrolyte. Both of those substrates are sealed with a sealer 18 through a spacer 17, and an electrolyte 20 is vacuum-injected from an injection port 19. They are then sealed with glass beads 21 and a glass plate 22.
