Abstract

PURPOSE: To form a chromium plated layer with superior resistance to corrosion and wear by forming a pepper-and-salt chromium plated layer on the surface of a metal and carrying out hard chromium plating on the plated surface.
CONSTITUTION: An above 10 μ thick pepper-and-salt chromium plated layer is formed on the surface of each of metallic parts at a bath temp. of about 25W65°C and a current density of about 10W35 A/cm2. Next hard chromium plating is carried out in the same plating bath under the same conditions. The resulting hard chromium plated layer may be made porous. The intermediate pepper-and-salt layer undergoes no crack reaching the base metal and enhances corrosion resistance. The surface hard layer gives good wear resistance. This method is applied as a means for surface treating sliding parts of the piston rod of a hydraulic cylinder.
