Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide very supeior corrosion and wear resistances to a graphite material by ion plating the surface of the material with a predetermined metal, its carbide or the like to form a high density uniform coat of a specified thickness.
CONSTITUTION: The surface of a graphite material of predetermined form and size is ion plated with a metal such as W or Ta, its carbide or its nitride in a vacuum atmosphere to form a 3W70μ thick metal layer. Since the atomic fine particles of the coating material is closely in contact with the base material graphite, the resulting graphite material has increased surface density and remarkably improved wear resistance, especially to rotation wear as well as superior corrosion resistance.
