Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve the bonding property and wear resistance of a magnetic layer by forming on a supporter a nonmagnetic polymer layer that has partial surface projections and then by providing the metal magnetic layer while exposing the base material nonmagnetic layer partially.
CONSTITUTION: On supporter 1, base material layer 2 of an inorganic polymer layer is formed which contains nonmagnetic and wear-resisting powder such as Al2O3 of ≥about 6 in Mohs' hardness and ≤ about 3μ in mean grain size. This is processed by a heat calendar roll, etc., chased with a pattern to form projections of not less than the thickness of a magnetic film to be formed next. On this base material layer 2, metal magnetic layer 3 of Co, Ni, etc., are provided by plating to a thickness of about 0.05W2μ. Next, surface work is carried out to expose base material layer 2 partially on the surface. Consequently, a magnetic recording medium superior in wear resistance and running property can be obtained.
