Abstract

PURPOSE: To reduce the consumption of an electrode by using graphite having a specified value or above of specific gravity as a base material and by forming a layer of metallic Pt, Pd, a Pt-Pd alloy or an alloy of Pt, Pd and a rare earth element on the surface of the graphite or the grain boundary.
CONSTITUTION: Sintered graphite grains having ≥2.1 specific gravity are molded into an electrode of a desired shape. A layer of metallic Pt, pd, a Pt-Pd alloy or an alloy of Pt, Pd and a rare earth element is formed on the surface of the electrode or the grain boundary. Y, Sm, Eu, Ga, La or the like is used as the rare earth element. To form said layer an ion plating method or a vapor deposition method is applied.
