Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the tittle substances useful as raw materials or intermediates for medicines, pesticides, or dyes, at low cost easily, by oxidizing an esterified m-cresol with oxygen in the presence of a soluble heavy metal salt and a bromine compound as catalysts.
CONSTITUTION: An esterified m-cresol of formula I: (A is ester residue) is oxidized with oxygen (or air) in the presence of a soluble heavy metal salt, e.g. a Co, Mn, Cr, or Ni salt of acetic or naphthenic acid, and a soluble bromine compound, e.g. HBr. NaBr, NH4Br, or bromoacetic acid, as catalysts in a saturated lower carboxylic acid and/or its anhydride as a solvent at 50W170°C to give a m-hydroxybenzoic acid derivative of formula II, which is hydrolyzed to form m-hydroxybenzoic acid. The reaction can be continuously carried out by adding the acid anhydride to the remaining mixture after removal of the compound of formula II to adjust the moisture of the system, to which the raw material is added.
