Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound, useful as the starting material of ketoprofen having antiinflammatory and analgesic activities, in high yield, by the oxidation of 3-methylbenzophenone in the presence of a lower fatty acid anhydride, followed by hydrolysis.
CONSTITUTION: 3-Methylbenzophenone is oxidized with an oxidizing agent, e.g. CrO3, in the presence of a lower fatty acid anhydride, preferably acetic anhydride, and preferably in the presence of an acid catalyst, e.g. H2SO4, to give 3-benzoylbenzaldehydediacylacetal, which is then hydrolyzed to afford 3-benzoylbenzaldehyde of the formula. The reaction temp. is in the range of -10W+50°C and the reaction period is 1W5hr when acetic anhydride is used as the fatty acid anhydride, H2SO4 as the acid catalyst, and CrO3 as the oxidizing agent.
