Abstract

PURPOSE: 4-Pentenoic acid or its ester, which is readily and inexpensively available, is used as a starting material and oxidized with PdCl2 in the presence of copper chloride and oxygen molecules in water or an aqueous solvent to produce the titled compound used as a raw material for perfume and medicines under mild conditions.
CONSTITUTION: 4-Pentenoic acid or its ester of formula I (R is H, lower alkyl) is used as a raw material and oxidized with PdCl2 in the presence of a copper chloride, preferably cuprous chloride, and an oxygen gas in water or an aqueous mixture solvent such as water-carbon tetrachloride or water-benzene to produce levulinic acid or its ester of formula II. The reaction temperature is 0W100°C, preferably 50W 70°C. The by-product which is formed in the production of dimethyl sebacate from monomethyl adipate by the electrolytic process is used as the starting material. PdCl2, a mild oxidizing agent, is used and regenerated readily only by consuming an oxygen gas.
