【発明の詳細な説明】
【０００１】
【発明の属する技術分野】本発明はゴルフボールに関
し、さらに詳細には、ゴルフボールの表面上の一列中の
どの３つのディンプルも整列するへりを有さないゴルフ
ボールに関する。好ましくは複数の大きさを有するディ
ンプルが使用される。
【０００２】
【従来の技術】通常、ゴルフボールは、ゴルフボールの
球表面にディンプルが形成されるモールディング工程で
作られる。このモールディング工程は、コアのまわりに
カバーストックを射出成形するかあるいはコアのまわり
に予備成形された半シェルを圧縮成形することによって
従来の方法で行われる。通常、コアは、ツーピースゴル
フボールとなるゴムの固体塊か、あるいはスリーピース
ゴルフボールとなる糸巻きコアである。糸巻きコアは、
中心のまわりに薄い弾性糸を巻くことによって作られ
る。中心はゴムの固体塊かあるいは液体充填球であり、
後者は、中心のまわりに糸を巻くことを促進するために
一時的に凍結されている。ワンピースゴルフボールは材
料の塊から作られ、固体であろうと糸巻きであろうとコ
アを有してはいない。
【０００３】米国ゴルフ協会（ＵＳＧＡ）はルールを発
布し、そのうちの１つはゴルフボールの対称性に関す
る。ＵＳＧＡによる対称の要求には、ゴルフボールは、
略球面対称として振るまうよう設計および製造されなけ
ればならないとしるされている。この課題に適合させる
のは困難である。

【発明の構成】本発明は、複数のディンプルが形成され
た球表面を有し、一列のどの３つのディンプルも整列す
るへりを有さないゴルフボールを提供する。全てのディ
ンプルは同じ公称ディンプル直径を有することもできる
が、多くの状況において、隣接するディンプルが実質的
に異なる公称ディンプル直径を有することが望ましい。
【０００５】本発明によるゴルフボールは、従来のゴル
フボールより大きい揚抗比を有すると考えられる。揚抗
比とは、ゴルフボールが空中を飛行している間の各瞬間
におけるゴルフボールへの抗力に対する揚力の比であ
る。揚力は、飛行中に上向きかつゴルフボールの移動方
向に直角にゴルフボールに対して働く空気力学的力であ
る。抗力は、ゴルフボールの飛行方向から 180°の方向
でゴルフボールに働く空気力学的力である。一列のどの
３つのディンプルをも整列するへりを有さないようにす
ることによって、整列したへりを有する３つ以上のディ
ンプルの列を有する従来のゴルフボールに比べて本発明
のゴルフボールがより大きい揚抗比を有すると考えられ
る。実際問題として、大きい揚抗比はゴルフボールがよ
り遠くに飛ぶことを意味する。
【０００６】好ましくは、ディンプルは、ゴルフボール
を取りまく４つの大円路に相当する４つの分割線を有す
ることにより、どの分割線もいかなるディンプルにも交
差しないようにして、ゴルフボールの球表面に形成され
る。ディンプルは２つのパターンで配置される。１つの
パターンは球面正方形を形成し、もう１つのパターンは
球面三角形を形成する。ゴルフボールの表面は６つの球
面正方形と８つの球面三角形によって覆われ、どちらの
形状もゴルフボールの表面のかなり大きい面積を占めて
いる。そのようなパターンは対称であり、また複数のサ
イズのディンプルがゴルフボールの表面に配される場合
に良好な全体表面被度と最小のランド面にも役立つこと
がわかった。
【０００７】好ましくは、本発明によるゴルフボール
は、ゴルフボールの表面を６つの球面正方形と８つの球
面正三角形に分割することによって作られる。これらの
球面三角形および球面正方形は、ゴルフボールの球表面
の内側に八面体をしるし、その八面体を球表面上に投影
し、その八面体の各へりに中点をとり、それら中点の各
々を最も近い隣り合う中点と結ぶことによって形成され
る。上記のように中点を結んだ後の幾何学形状は、６つ
の球面正方形と８つの球面正三角形を有する。大円路
は、上記のように形成された球面正方形と球面三角形の
へりをたどる。４つの大円路の各々は６つの中点を通過
する。この４つの大円路はゴルフボールの表面にある分
割線の位置に相当する。分割線は４つの大円路と同一の
拡がりをもつ。好ましくは、モールド分割線が本発明の
分割線の１つに相当し、他の３つの分割線は補助分割線
である。
【０００８】ディンプルは、６つの球面正方形各々の内
側および８つの球面正三角形各々の内にディンプルを配
し、どのディンプルも分割線に交差しないようにし、一
列中のどの３つのディンプルも整列するへりを有さない
ようにすることによって、ゴルフボールの表面全体に分
布される。好ましくは、ゴルフボール表面の約50％以上
がディンプルで覆われている。好ましくは、各球面正方
形同士は互いに同じディンプルパターンをゴルフボール
の表面に有し、また各球面三角形同士も互いに同じディ
ンプルパターンをゴルフボールの表面に有する。
【０００９】好ましいディンプルパターンは 440および
456のディンプルを有する。ある業者は、少数のディン
プル（通常８、ボールの各極部について４つずつ）を取
り去り（例えば 432および 448のディンプルとする）、
商標および識別番号等をボールに付ける。しかし、最近
のスタンピング方法により、ディンプルを取り除くこと
なく商標および識別番号等をボールに付けることが可能
である。従って、本発明による好ましいゴルフボールは
約 432〜440 あるいは約 448〜456 のディンプルを有す
る。

【発明の実施の形態】図面を参照しながら、本発明を以
下の実施例に基づいてさらに詳細に説明する。
【００１１】図１〜図７は本発明によるゴルフボールの
表面にディンプルを配するための好ましい方法を示して
いる。
【００１２】図１は、内側に八面体12がしるされた球10
を示している。八面体12の各へりの12の中点が14，16，
18，20，22，24，26，28，30，32，34および36で表わさ
れている。へりは、14′，16′，18′，20′，22′，2
4′，26′，28′，30′，32′，34′および36′で示さ
れている。八面体12の各面の各サイドにおける中点の各
組を結ぶことによって、正三角形が形成され、本発明の
８つの正三角形となる。例えば、中点16，18および36を
結んで16‐18‐36の組で示される３つの頂点を有する正
三角形が形成される。同じことが図１の右側にある八面
体の４つの面全てについて行える。つまり、図１の右側
にある３つの残りの正三角形は、24‐26‐36；26‐28‐
34；および18‐20‐34なる３つの中点の組によって示さ
れる。これらの中点の組は各正三角形の頂点を示す。図
１の左側にあるへり14′，16′，20′，22′，24′，2
8′，30′および32′の中点を結ぶことによって残る４
つの正三角形が形成されることは明らかである。これら
の残る４つの正三角形は、14‐16‐32；14‐20‐30；22
‐24‐32；および22‐28‐30なる３つの中点の組で示さ

い。

の中点を通過し、上述したようにして形成される正三角
形や正方形のへりに対応する。各大円路は次のような６
つの中点の組によって示される：24‐36‐18‐20‐30‐
22；24‐26‐34‐20‐14‐32；16‐18‐34‐28‐22‐3
2；および16‐14‐30‐28‐26‐36。

【実施例】以下に本発明の実施例を示す。
【００４０】実施例 １ ＳＵＲＬＹR Ｎカバーと糸巻きコアを有するゴルフボー
ルを用いて飛距離テストを行った。図７および図８のパ
ターンと表１および表３のディンプル寸法を有するゴル
フボールを、Acushnet社からTitleist 384ＤＴという商
標名で販売されている 384のディンプルを有する市販の
ボール（対照ボール）と比較してテストした。結果を表
４に示す。

ールに対する比較結果で表示され、例えば表中の“＋7.
3 ヤード”とは、ロードライバーを用いてロフト角11°
で打ち出された際に従来のボール（対照ボール）より
7.3ヤード遠くに飛んだことを意味する。
【００４３】測定は、４つの異なるクラブヘッドを用い
てジュアルペンジュラムドライビングマシンによって行
った。ロフト角とは、ボールとのインパクト時点で垂直
に対してクラブヘッドの面がなす角のことである。

のボール(456ディンプル）はまた、対照ボールより高く
飛んだ。これは、本発明によるボールの揚抗比が対照ボ

とワンピースのカバー）を使用し、ボールが飛行中に小
さいスピン速度を有する構造とする。

ともわかった。

囲線の延長部から前記円の一部の最深部までの距離であ
る。

Claims (6)

    【特許請求の範囲】
  1. 【請求項１】 モールド分割線を有する球状表面に該分
    割線と交差しない複数のディンプルが形成されてなるゴ
    ルフボールにおいて、一列になったどの３つのディンプ
    ルも前記分割線に沿って整列するへりを有さないことを
    特徴とするゴルフボール。
  2. 【請求項２】 前記ゴルフボールがどのディンプルとも
    交差しない４つの分割線を有し、これら４つの分割線が
    ４つの大円路に相当し、ディンプルが前記４つの分割線
    と交差しないように配されていることを特徴とする請求
    項１記載のゴルフボール。
  3. 【請求項３】 前記一列になったディンプルが交互に異
    なる公称ディンプル直径のものからなることを特徴とす
    る請求項１記載のゴルフボール。
  4. 【請求項４】 前記一列になったディンプルが千鳥足状
    に配置されていることを特徴とする請求項１記載のゴル
    フボール。
  5. 【請求項５】 前記一列になったディンプルが交互に異
    なる公称ディンプル直径のものからなるとともに千鳥足
    状に配置されていることを特徴とする請求項１記載のゴ
    ルフボール。
  6. 【請求項６】 ディンプルが、ゴルフボールの表面を８
    つの正三角形と６つの正方形に分割することによって配
    され、前記８つの正三角形と６つの正方形は、前記球状
    表面に八面体をしるし、その八面体の各へりに中点をし
    るし、前記球状表面に各々が６つの中点を通過する４つ
    の大円路を形成し、前記４つの分割線が前記４つの大円
    路に相当し、ディンプルが、前記４つの分割線と交差し
    ないように前記８つの正三角形と６つの正方形内に配さ
    れることを特徴とする請求項２記載のゴルフボール。
