【発明の詳細な説明】
切換可能レンズ
本発明は、特性が可変のレンズに関するものである。
本発明は、複焦点レンズの分野、特にコンタクトレンズまたは眼内レンズなど
の眼に使用される複焦点レンズに適用される。従来より、コンタクトレンズ及び
眼内レンズでは、多くの異なる技術を用いて、ユーザが近くの物体及び遠くの物
体を両方とも見れるようにしていた。これらの技術を要約すると以下の通りであ
る。
(i) 単一視野(monovision)
ユーザが、それぞれの眼に異なる焦点距離のレンズを装着する。
一方のレンズが近くを見るためのものであり、他方のレンズが遠くを見るための
ものである。
(ii) 同時視野(simultaneous vision)
ユーザの眼が、近くの像及び遠くの像を共に同時に網膜に集束させ、脳が像を
識別し、不要な一方の像を無視できるようにする。このことは、レンズの領域分
割、偏光分割、色分割、または複焦点回折レンズによって実現される。
(iii) 複焦点の移動(translating bifocals)
プリズム安定器(バラスト:ballast)を設け、レンズを眼の中で正しい方向
へ向ける。レンズは、眼が上を見ているか下を見ているかによって、角膜を横切
って上下に移動する。ユーザは、下を見る
とき、異なる光学的パワーで視覚する。
これらの技術には、所定の欠点がある。上記(i)及び(ii)の場合、ユーザ
が2つの像に連続的に遭遇してしまうという共通の欠点がある。多くの場合、こ
のことは、視野の質を妥協している。例えば、ユーザが夜間運転をしている場合
、はっきりとしたヘッドランプと、ぼんやりと接近するヘッドランプとを両方と
も同時に視覚し、前方をはっきりと見ることができない場合などがある。複焦点
の移動は、前方をまっすぐ見ている時はユーザが遠い視野のみを必要とし、下を
見ている時にはユーザが近くの視野のみを必要とするとの仮定に基づいている。
このことは、必ずしも当てはまらなく、多くの場合に欠点となる。
本発明の目的は、ユーザが近くの視野と遠くの視野とを切り換えることのでき
るレンズを提供することによってこれらの問題点を解消することである。コンタ
クトレンズまたは眼内のレンズの場合、レンズは着用者によって切り換えられる
。このため、ユーザは、単焦点レンズの視覚的敏捷性を備えつつ、複焦点レンズ
の柔軟性を享受できる。
本発明は、光学に関する広い範囲で応用される。例えば、コンパクトディスク
プレーヤまたは光メモリーディスクドライブで使用するための可変焦点距離のレ
ンズを提供できる。
本発明によるレンズアセンブリは、
電界または磁界を作用させることによって、焦点距離、吸収率、色、及び有効
開口の少なくとも一つを切換可能であるレンズと、
当該レンズの特性を切り換えるために、駆動インパルスを供給するスイッチン
グ手段と、
当該スイッチング手段に電力を供給するための一体型電源と、
を備えている。
前記電源を、例えば慣用の小型バッテリーまたは光セルとすることができる。
光セルの場合、当該ユニットは、そこに入射する光以外に電源を備えていない。
眼用レンズとして主に使用される場合、前記電源を、涙液を使用して動作するバ
ッテリーとして、レンズを起動することができる。
レンズを眼用レンズとして使用する場合の好適例において、ユーザは、通常の
標準的な眼の動きとは異なる緩慢な(自発的な)眼の動きによって、レンズアセ
ンブリを制御することができる。この一例として、より長い時間の瞬きがある。
一般的な自発的瞬きは、約1/10秒継続する。(都合の良いことには、不自然
と思えるほど長時間である必要はないものの、)緩慢な、より長時間の瞬きによ
って、レンズをトリガし、焦点距離を変更することができる。極めて暗い状況で
、光セルを電源として使用する場合、入射光による装置への電源供給が極めてロ
ーレベルの時、例えば、装置の焦点距離が、遠くの視野を提供する焦点距離に戻
るように設計することができる。
「切換(スイッチ)」という言葉は、以下において主に、2つのバイナリー画
像状態の一方から他方への変化を示すのに使用されることに留意すべきである。
しかし、これは、これらのバイナリー状態の間のアナログ変化をも含むことに留
意すべきである。このよう
なアナログ切換は、(例えば、技術光学などの)色々な焦点距離、色または開口
が必要ないくつかの応用例において有効である。例えば、可変焦点レンズは、コ
ンパクトディスクプレーヤに使用されるフォーカスサーボシステムに応用される
。
本発明を、眼に応用する場合について以下に詳細に説明するが、他に応用でき
ることは明らかである。
以下、本発明の実施例を図面を参照して説明する。

図1に、保護用外側コーティングまたはレンズ3によって包囲されている内側
切換可能レンズ2を備えているレンズアセンブリ1を示す。ここで、前記保護用
外側コーティングまたはレンズ3は、切換可能レンズ2をカプセルで保護してい
る。電源4は、回路5を介して切換可能レンズ2に接続され、当該切換可能レン
ズ2の焦点距離、吸収、色または実効開口を切り換える。
図2に、本発明の特定の例を示す。この第1の例は、中心厚が比較的大きい眼
内レンズに特に好適である。(慣用の屈折式、フレネル式、または回折式の)固
定複屈折材からなる複屈折レンズ10を、液晶層12及び偏光子層13からなる
液晶セル11と光学的に直列に配置する。複屈折レンズ10及び液晶セル11は
、保護外側層14で包まれている。光セル及び電気回路15は、保護外側層14
内に設けられ、液晶層12に電気的に接続されている。
複屈折レンズ10は、レンズへの入射光の各偏光に対して種々の焦点距離を提
供する。液晶セル11は、光セル及び回路15によって液晶セル11に作用する
電界に従って、液晶セル11への入射光の偏光状態の一つを選択できる特性を有
するように構成することができる。結果的に、液晶セル11は、複屈折レンズ1
0の焦点距離のいづれかを選択するのに有効に使用される。図2に示す例の場合
、不要な偏光状態は、偏光子層13によって吸収される。偏光子層13を、液晶
層12から分離した層にする事ができる。
代案として、二色性染料を加えることによって、液晶層12が、1つの状態で
、1つの偏光を優先的に吸収し、別に偏光子層13を設けなくとも良いようにす
る事ができる。この場合、液晶層12内の液晶が駆動されていない時、ある偏光
の光が吸収され、アセンブリ1は、単焦点レンズとして機能する(但し、以下で
詳細に説明するように、複屈折レンズによって生成される焦点の一つを選択する
ことができる。)。液晶層12内の液晶が駆動されていると、どちらの偏光の光
も吸収されず、アセンブリ1は2焦点を有し、この状態で同時視野装置として機
能する。
他の変形例では、液晶層12を、二色性染料が添加されたコレステリック状の
液晶とし、非駆動状態において、(染料の吸収特性に基づき)セルが暗くなるか
若しくは色付くようにし、また、駆動状態において、セルが透明になる様にする
ことができる。このようにして、吸収特性または色を可変にできるレンズを構成
することができる。更にセルを局所的に駆動される領域に分割した場合、有効に
変更可能な開口部を用いてレンズを形成することができる。この構成例により、
レンズの外側環状部での吸収を切り換えることができる。このことによって、焦
点距離は固定されているが、光学的な解像度及び焦点深度を制御できる。
図2を参照して説明した第1の例の寿命を試験するために、アセンブリ(図示
せず)を、複屈折レンズ10としての液晶レンズ、切換可能液晶層12、偏光子
層13、光ダイオード及び外部スイッチで構成した。液晶レンズ10は、一方に
平面を有し、他方に直径8mmで最大高さ80ミクロンの球面を有するセルとし
て構成される。レンズセル壁は、眼用のプラスチックCR39からなり、高複屈
折性ネマティック状の液晶メルク(Merck)E44で充填されている。レンズの
2つの焦点の光学的パワーが約0及び+3ディオプトリーであることを確かめた
。その後、25mm×25mmのアクティブ領域を有するパターン化されていな
い商業的に入手可能なねじれたネマティック状液晶セル及び1つの偏光子を所定
の位置に、レンズと直列に配置した。このセルの切換(スイッチング)電圧が5
ボルトであるいことを確かめた。12個の光ダイオードを電気的に直列に配置し
、手動スイッチを介して直流電力をセルに供給した。周囲の光によって駆動され
る最終的な装置を試験し、薄暗い部屋の明か
りの中でさえ、光学的パワーを約0と+3ディオプトリーとの間で切換調節可能
であることを確かめた。
本発明による装置の第2の態様は、コンタクトレンズのような薄い構造を必要
とする場合に特に関連するものであり、レンズそれ自体を切換可能装置として構
成する。図3及び4は、この一例を示している。この例におけるレンズアセンブ
リ20は、鋳造によって等方性材料から形成される回折レンズ21を備えている
。当該回折レンズ21は、回折構造を提供する環状の段22を有している。第2
の等方性素子23は、環状の段22によって形成される回折構造領域を除いて前
記第1の等方性素子21と整合する面を備えている。これら2つの素子21と2
3とが相まって、環状の段22と第2の素子23との間の空間に液晶24を有し
ている薄いセルを形成する。光セル及び電子回路25は、レンズアセンブリ20
の周囲における、等方性素子21と23との間の他の空間に設けられている。
第2の態様の一例では、液晶24をネマティック状の液晶とし、電気的に切り
換えられない状態で、液晶の通常または異常な屈折率が、素子21、23の等方

回折レンズ構造による角度偏差のない状態で回折構造を通過し、従って屈折レン
ズによってのみ規定される一焦点を通過する。他の変位する偏光の場合、回折レ
ンズ構造によって生じる角度偏差は、レンズの開口にわたって変化し、この偏光
に対して第2の異なる焦点を生成する。光セル及び電気回路25を使用すること
によって、液晶層24が電気的に切り換えられると、液晶の屈折率が偏光非感応
型となり、レンズは単一の焦点のみを生成する。
偏光子(図示せず)を回折レンズに更に設け、ある単一焦点状態(例えば、0
ディオプトリー)から他の単一焦点状態(例えば+3ディオプトリー)へ切り換
えるように装置を構成し、2つの選択可能な焦点を有している真の単一視野切換
可能レンズを作り出すことができる。液晶セルが独立の偏光子を有していない場
合、ある状態において、両方の焦点が同時に生成され、この状態において、装置
は同時視野装置として機能する。また、(遠い視野の場合に便利な)他の状態に
おいて、ただ一つの焦点のみが生成される。
本発明の他の好適例では、レンズアセンブリを、偏光とは無関係に、電界の作
用によって異なる固定焦点距離を有する2つの状態間で切換可能な眼のレンズ、
好ましくはコンタクトレンズとしている。この例では、コンタクトレンズは、少
なくとも90パーセントの入射光、好ましくはほぼ100パーセントの入射光を
、2つの焦点距離のそれぞれにおいて透過する。2つの焦点距離は、通常、ユー
ザの所望の近くの視野及び遠くの視野に対応している。
図3及び4のレンズアセンブリは、慣用のネマティック状の液晶の代わりに、
コレステリック状の液晶を備えることができる。コレステリック状の液晶は、ネ
マティック分子軸が螺旋構造を形成する様に作用する化合物が添加されたネマテ
ィック状液晶である。このような構造は、ねじれピッチ及び複屈折の発生が小さ
く、通常光の一波長よりも小さい場合、偏光状態をはっきりと識別しない。コレ
ステリック状の材料は、作用電界によって駆動されると、慣用のねじれネマティ
ック状液晶と同様に、異なる屈折率の第2非複屈折状態に切り替わる。従って、
このようにして構成される回折レンズは、
(単一の切換可能焦点が常に提供されるので、)真の単一視野切換可能レンズで
あるが、偏光にも無関係である。この回折レンズは、(入射光の一般的に半分を
吸収する)他の偏光子を必要としないので、実質的に100パーセントの入射光
を常に伝達する。このようにして、低照度の下で、より大きな視野を着用者に提
供する。
図3及び4のレンズアセンブリは、材料の透明点よりも高い温度の液晶材料を
含有している。透明点において材料は等方性となり、その屈折率は、実際上、通
常屈折率と異常屈折率との平均となるようにしている。材料が切り換えられる(
スイッチされる)と、材料は、作用する電界に沿って整列し、標準的に材料を通
過する光は、通常屈折率のみに遭遇する。従って、このようにして構成される回
折レンズは、真の単一視野レンズとして機能し、その特性は、これを透過する光
の偏光状態とは無関係である。
図3及び4の回折レンズを好適に設計し、回折レンズ領域の境界において全波
長位相が不整合となるようにし、且つ他の焦点を発生させ得る望ましくないオー
ダの回折を最小としつつ、光を変位させるようにする。計算によれば、この条件
下において、望ましくない回折に失われるのは光のわずか0.9パーセントであ
る。
図3及び4を参照して説明した上記第2の例及びその変形例の利点は、(現存
する液晶材料を用いて最小3ミクロン厚と計算される)極めて薄いセル構造を有
し、必要とされる液体の量が極めて少ない(1コンタクトレンズに対して約10
0pm3)ことである。このことによって、漏れまたは拡散作用による毒性作用
または他の生物学的不適合の可能性を低減できるとともに、慣用のコンタクトレ
ンズ
材で潜在的に備わっている等方性材料の機械的特性、化学的特性及び気体透過特
性をほぼ保持できる。
上記実施例のいづれかに使用される液晶を、強誘電性とすることができる。強
誘電性は、固有の双安定性を有し、駆動電圧が装置を切り換える場合にのみ必要
とされ、他の場合に電気的パワーが全く必要とされない点で有利である。
当該装置の上記例のいづれかにおいて、電源及び制御回路4,15を(例えば
コンタクトレンズの虹彩領域内の)光学的領域の外側に配置することによって電
気制御を実現できる。慣用の液晶セルに使用されるのと同様な電極パターンを使
用し、液晶に電気接点を設ける。
図5に、スイッチング回路の一例を示す。光ダイオードからの出力信号30は
、2つの並列な単安定回路31,32の各入力端子に供給される。一方の単安定
回路31の出力パルスの持続時間を例えば120msとし、他方の単安定回路3
2の持続時間を例えば80msとすることができる。単安定回路31,32の出
力信号は、排他的論理和ゲート33の各入力端子に供給される。排他的論理和ゲ
ート33の出力は、D型フリップフロップ34のリセット入力端子に供給され、
その出力Qは、切換(スイッチング)信号を供給する。入力信号30も、フリッ
プフロップ34のクロック入力端子に供給される。
ユーザが80〜120msの時間瞬きする場合、光ダイオードの出力30は、
その時間下降する。各単安定回路31,32はトリガ
される。入力パルス30が80〜120msの間ロー状態なので、排他的論理和
ゲート33は、その期間ハイ状態出力をフリップフロップ34に供給し、このた
め、フリップフロップ34のQ出力を、ハイ状態からロー状態へ、またはその逆
へトグル(toggle)し、好適な切換(スイッチング)信号を供給する。
必要な電源の大きさは、駆動回路による。電子計算機に使用されるものと形態
が類似している低漏洩集積回路の場合、必要な電源は約30マイクロワットであ
る。これは、セル切換の間に必要である。強誘電液晶の場合、切換時間は、約1
0マイクロ秒である。例えば、ユーザが1秒毎に1回装置を切り換えたい場合、
平均的な電力消費は5pwである。この電力は、光セルまたはバッテリーによっ
て発生する。光セルを使用した場合、薄暗い部屋内で利用可能な光学的パワーは
、0.2w/m2または0.2マイクロワット/mm2と仮定した場合、約50m2
の壁面積に広がる一般的に約10ワットである電球定格電力の約10パーセン
トである。可視波長帯域における1平方ミリメートルシリコン光ダイオードの電
力変換効率は約30パーセントであり、従って60nwである。これは、強誘電
素子を切り換える(スイッチする)のに十分な平均電力である。
コレステリック状の装置は、8〜10ボルトの駆動電圧を必要とする。これは
、平均して殆ど直流成分を有していない、または直流成分を全く有していないこ
とが好ましい(液晶は、これらに直流電界が作用するとゆっくりと加水分解する
。)。デバイスの容量が約150pFであると仮定すると、電位が反転する毎の
、1/2CV2で与えられる損失エネルギーは、約7.5nJである。デバイスを各
10秒毎にリフレッシュする場合、セルの平均電力消費は、薄暗い
部屋内で1平方ミリメートルのシリコン光ダイオードによって生成される電力と
同様に、75nWである。
都合の良いことに、バッテリーは、このレベルの電力を長時間供給できる。好
ましくは金属の、2つの非同質材料からなる電極を用いて、小型バッテリーを構
成できる。これによって、装置は、両電極が共通電界質に接触する時に電流を供
給する。電極は種々の形態にすることができる。電極は、表面にプリントされ、
または電極材料から組立られ、または電気的な状態がマトリックスに生じるよう
に、不活性マトリックス内に電極材料の粒子を散乱させることによって構成され
る。
バッテリーが液体中に漬けられるまで電流が流れない不活性状態で、バッテリ
ーが製造される。このような液体を、眼と接触する涙液膜とすることができる。
このような特徴は、セル全体が包囲されているが、膜によって装置の外側からイ
オンまたは水にアクセスできるバッテリーセルを構成することによって提供され
る。水またはイオンが装置内に拡散することによって、バッテリーが起動される
。電極からのイオンが膜を越えて装置の外側に移動しない膜を使用することが望
ましい。
ある態様では、バッテリーは、小さなギャップによって離隔している2つの平
面電極を備えている。このギャップ内に、電界質を含有する特定の脱水ゲルを設
ける。セル全体は、水透過膜によって外部から分離されている。部分的に脱水す
るため、ゲルは電極間のギャップを充填しておらず、電流は流れない。コンタク
トレンズが眼と接触すると、水が選択膜を越え、ゲルが膨張し、ギャップを充填
する。その後、電極は電界質によって接続され、電流が流れる。
第2の態様では、バッテリーは、2つの電極間に多結晶塩電界質を有している
。膜を水が越えることによって、多結晶電界質が水和し、バッテリーが起動され
る。
一例として図6に示されている第3の態様では、バッテリーは、銅電極40と
、脱水ポリマー電界質42によって分離されている亜鉛電極41とを備えている
。選択膜43は、電極40,41を包囲し、電線44,45が膜43を介してそ
れぞれ電極40,41に接続されている。膜43を通過する水によってポリマー
電界質を水和し、バッテリーを起動する。ポリマー電界質42を使用することは
、当該材料が高分子重量を有し、従って膜によって放射状に収容される点で有利
である。水分子が通過可能であるが、電極からの高分子重量電界質及びイオンを
通過させないような膜材料を選択することが望ましい。
第4の態様では、バッテリーは、2つの電極のみから成っている。当該システ
ムを涙液中に漬けることによって、回路を構成するのに必要な電界質が提供され
る。
第5の形態では、バッテリーは、脱水ゲルと接触する2つの電極を備えている
。2つの電極を涙液中に漬けることによってゲルが水和し、電界質にイオンを供
給する。ゲルは、電極からイオンを収集するように作用する。
有機キレート剤を、膜を有するこれらのバッテリー構成内に設け
ることができる。このキレート剤は、イオンがセル内を移動できるようにすると
共に、イオンが膜を越えて移動しないようにするために用いられる。
本発明によるコンタクトレンズは、ユーザに簡単な方法で近くの視野と遠くの
視野とを選択させることができる点で有利であり、同時視野複焦点レンズに関す
る問題点を低減または解消できるとともに、複焦点レンズの利点を保持すること
ができる。機械的特性、化学的特性、気体透過特性及び生体学的互換特性は、カ
プセルで保護される材料によって決定される。この材料を、眼のレンズ用の慣用
の材料とすることができる。

17.前記レンズが、入射光の偏光とは無関係に、電界の作用によって焦点距離
