Description

【発明の詳細な説明】 〔産業上の利用分野〕 本発明は、ネットワーク環境の中で接続されたコンピュ
ータシステムにオペレーティングシステムをロードし、
そのオペレーティングシステムを更新する方法に関する
。
〔従来の技術及び発明が解決しようとする問題点〕
オペレーティングシステムハ、コンピュータシステム内
部にあってプロセッサ、主記憶装置、２次記憶装置及び
入出力装置などの機器資源の制御を管理する複数のプロ
グラムモジュールかう構成される。それらのモジュール
はコンフリクトを解決し、性能を最適化しようとし、ま
た、コンピュータの有効利用を簡単に行えるようにする
。プログラムモジュールはユーザープログラムと、物理
的なコンピュータハードウェアとの間でインタフェース
として作用する。オペレーティングシステムをロードす
るために、テープドライブなどの入出力装置はテープド
ライブに常駐しているプログラムを実行し、新喪なオペ
レーティングシステムデータをコンピュータ内のメモリ
の所定の領域に入力する。オペレーティングシステムの
ロード中に、そのオペレーティングシステムがロードさ
れるディスクスペースは消去され、そこに、新たなオペ
レーティングシステムデータが再び書込まれる。システ
ムにロードすべき情報の量は多く、テープから情報を読
取って、ダウンロードするのに、１時間半から２時間を
要する。
今日の分散型システムが出現する前は、単一のコンピュ
ータシステムで複数のユーザーにサービスしていたと考
えられる。従って、オペレーティングシステムを更新す
べきときが来たならば、システム管理者は新たなオペレ
ーティングシステムを単一のコンピュータシステムにロ
ードするだけで良いことになる。しかしながら、今日の
分散処理環境においては、コンピュータが他のコンピュ
ータとネットワーク接続されるように、各ユーザーが独
自のオペレーティングシステムを滲なう独自のコンピュ
ータを有することが全く当た９前になっている。従って
、オペレーティングシステムの更新が実行される場合、
ネットワーク内の個々のコンピュータシステムに関して
、入出力装置からオペレーティングシステムをロードす
るプロセスを実行しなければならない。複数のコンビニ
−メジステムの更新は非常に長い時間を必要とし、１週
間に１度程度の割合でオペレーティングシステムの更新
が実行されるようなオペレーティングシステム開発環境
の下では、更新はますます厄介になる。そこで、分散環
境においては、オペレーティングシステムをテープから
１つの機械にロードし、その後そのオペレーティングシ
ステムのコピーを、ネットワークを介して、ネットワー
クに接続されている各コンピュータシステムへ伝送スる
のが好ましいと考えられる。
オペレーティングシステムを１つのシステムからネット
ワークを介して別のシステムへ転送すれば、オペレーテ
ィングシステムをロードするために必要な時間は短縮さ
れる。しかしながら、ネットワーク環境の中でコンピュ
ータにオペレーティングシステムをロードする九めには
、コンピュータシステムをプートし、コンピュータハー
ドウェアによシアクセス可能であシ且つネットワーク通
信が可能であるオペレーティングシステムをコンピュー
タシステムがランしている状態にしなければならない。
なお、新たなオペレーティングシステムがコンピュータ
にロードされたときには、ディスクスペースには改めて
データが書込まれることになるので、コンピュータハー
ドウェアによシ並行して使用されている既存のオペレー
ティングシステムは重ね書きされ、そこがわれてしまう
ことを忘れてはならない。現在使用中のオペレーティン
グシステムに対する重ね書きの問題を回避する方法の１
つは、ネットワーク中の別のコンピュータに常駐するオ
ペレーティングシステムによってロード又は更新される
べきコンピュータシステムをフートするものである。す
なわち、コンピュータハードウェアがオンされたときに
、ネットワークを介して信号を送信し、アクセスすべき
オペレーティングシステムヲ伴なうコンピュータハード
ウェアがその信号に応答する。そこで、遠隔ネットワー
クコンピュータは、自身の局所ディスクに、使用すべき
コンピュータのためのディスク区画を作成する。次に、
ネットワークコンピュータに位置するオペレーティング
システムを使用して、更新すべきコンピュータシステム
をプートスル。
コンピュータがプートされ、ネットワークにおいて活動
状態になったならば、新たなバージョンのオペレーティ
ングシステムをネットワークコンピュータシステムから
ダウンロードすることができる。
しかしながら、そのような方法を利用するなめには、特
定のコンピュータがオンされたときに、指定のネットワ
ークコンピュータにおいてアクセス可能であるオペレー
ティングシステムを使用してそのコンピュータをプート
すべきであることがわかるように、ネットワークを構成
し且つ初期設定しなければならない。従って、ネットワ
ークの構成が変わった場合又は当初特定されたのとは違
うネットワークコンピュータからプートアップすること
が望まれる場合には、ネットワークパラメータを変更す
る必要がある。
〔問題点を解決する九めの手段〕
従って、本発明の目的は、ネットワーク環境の中で１つ
のコンピュータから別のコンピュータへオペレーティン
グシステムをロードする方法を提供することである。
本発明の方法においては、ネットワーク通信を支援する
オペレーティングシステムのサブセットを、受取シ側コ
ンピュータのメモリに作成されたルート区画にロードす
る。このようにして、受取シ側コンピュータシステムが
メモリ常駐オペレーティングシステムからプートされて
ランし始め、ネットワークに接続されたならば、受取シ
側コンピュータシステムがそのディスクにロードされる
へｆｉ新次なバージョンのオペレーティングシステムを
転送側コンピュータシステムから受取る準備は完了した
ことになる。受取シ側コンピュータで現在利用中のオペ
レーティングシステムはディスクからではなく、メモリ
からランしているので、従来のように、祈念なバージョ
ンのオペレーティングシステムをダウンロードするとき
に現在利用中のオペレーティングシステムが重ね書きさ
れるという問題は起こらない。さらに、ネットワーク中
に配置された２つのコンピュータの間のデータ転送速度
は、テープドライブなどの外部入出力装置とコンピュー
タとの間のデータ転送速度よシはるかに速いため、オペ
レーティングシステムをダウンロードするのに要する時
間は短縮される。また、転送側コンピュータでオペレー
ティングシステムが更新されても、それに伴なって、受
取シ側コンピュータにおいて更新バージョンのオペレー
ティングシステムを導入する九めのテープを作成する必
要はない。
〔実施例〕
以下、添付の図面を参照して本発明の詳細な説明する。
同じネットワークに位置している１つのコンピュータ（
転送側コンピュータ）から別のコンピュータ（受取υ側
コンピュータ）へ、オペレーティングシステム全体を転
送することができる。この能力は、受取シ側コンピュー
タのＲＡＭに設定されたルートディレクトリにオペレー
ティングシステムのサブセットをロードすることによシ
、オペレーティングシステムファイルを受信できるよう
にディスクを解放するという方法で、利用可能となる。
ＲＡＭ　Ｋロードされるべきオペレーティングシステム
のサブセットには、転送側コンピュータと、受取シ側コ
ンピュータとの通信を可能にするようにコンピュータを
ネットワークに接続し且つコンピュータをネットワーク
で動作させるために必要な指令が含まれる。ＲＡＭのル
ートディレクトリを設定して、ＲＡＭにオペレーティン
グシステムを記憶することにより、ラン中のオペレーテ
ィングシステムに関連する全てのデータはメモリ内に収
められるようになるので、ディスクに導入されているシ
ステムの保全性は確保される。
以下の説明を通して、本発明の方法はＵＮＩＸ（ＵＮＩ
ＸはＡＴ＆Ｔの登碌商標である）オペレーティングシス
テムに関して、特に、Ｓｕｎオペレーティングシステム
、　Ｓｕｎ　Ｏ８（Ｓｕｎ　Ｏ８はＳｕｎ　Ｍｉｃｒｏ
ｓ７ｓｔｅｍｓ、　　Ｉｎｃ−（カリフォルニア州マウ
ンテン・ビュー）の商標である）に関して説明される。
しかしながら、以下の説明からも明らかになるように、
本発明の方法は、ネットワーク環境用のオペレーティン
グシステムの大半のものと関連して利用可能である。
ネットワークを経てオペレーティングシステムを転送す
るプロセスは、第１図のフローチャートに示されている
。ブロック２０において、ＲＡＭに導入されるべきルー
トディレクトリを設定し、オペレーティングシステムの
サブセットをメモリにロードする。これは、通常、シス
テムをパワーアップし、ルート装置をＲＡＭとすべくリ
セットすることができ且つオペレーティングシステムを
ＲＡＭに導入すべく再び初期設定することができるよう
にオペレーティングシステムのデフォルトローディング
を中断することによって実行される。
通常、オペレーティングシステムのサブセットは、テー
プなどの装置から、ＲＡＭへ転送される。しかしながら
、ＵＮＩＸシステムの場合、オペレーティングシステム
のサブセットは単純ファイル転送プロトコル（ＴＦＴＰ
）を使用して、ネットワークを介して接続している別の
コンピュータから転送しても良い。この場合ＴＦＴＰ　
はファイルを１つの装置から他の装置へネットワークを
介して転送する低レベル、装置特定並びにアドレス特定
のプロトコルである。
オペレーティングシステムのサブセットは、システムを
ブートすると共に、ファイル複写、ファイルの再名前付
け、ファイルのリンク、ディレクトリ作成などの基本機
能を実行するために必要である指令のみから構成される
。さらに、サブセットは、ディスクのフォーマットを規
定し、ファイルシステムをマウントし、ネットワーク通
信を確立し且つ維持する之めの指令を含んでいなければ
ならない。従って、この実施例においては、ＵＮＩＸオ
ペレーティングシステムのサブセットはＲＡＭにロード
されても良い。ただし、ＲＡＭにロードされるオペレー
ティングシステムは、受取り側コンピュータのディスク
へ転送されるべきオペレーティングシステムのサブセッ
トである必要はない。Ｓｕｎ　Ｏ８では、ＭＵＮＩＸの
スーパーセットがＲＡＭにロードされるのが好ましい。
ＭＵＮＩＸは、新＆なコンピュータシステムでディスク
区画を作成する九めに使用される非常に小さなＵＮＩＸ
オペレーティングシステムのサブセットである。
しかしながら、本発明のシステムで使用されるＭＵＮＩ
Ｘ　（７）バージョンは、システムヲネット’７−りに
接続させて、システムがネットワークで活動できるよう
にする、すなわち、システムがデータを送受信できるよ
うにする追加指令を含んでいる。
この追加指令は、Ｓｕｎ　Ｏ８環境において、「クライ
アント−サイドＮＦＳＪ　　として参照する能力をコン
ピュータに与える。
オペレーティングシステムのサブセットがＲＡＭにロー
ドされた後、ブロック３０において、メモリに常駐して
いるオペレーティングシステムを使用してシステムをプ
ートすると共に、祈念なオペレーティングシステムをロ
ードすべき局所ディスクをクリアする。さらに、オペレ
ーティングシステムが記憶される２つのディスク区画を
作成するのが好ましい。第１の区画はルートディレクト
リのサブディレクトリにリンク、すなわち、マウントさ
れ、第２の区画は第１の区画にマウントされる。このよ
うに、オペレーティングシステムがＲＡＭに常駐するル
ートディレクトリのサブディレクトリにロードされると
きに、データは第１のディスク区画、又は第２のディス
ク区画へ適切に転送されることになる。ま念、プロセス
中に指令が実行されている間に、データのスワツピング
を実行するために、別のディスク区画を作成することが
好ましい。このディスク区画は、オペレーティングシス
テムの転送中にあるいくつかの指令が実行されている間
に必要になると思われる余分のスクラッチメモリを構成
する。通常、これは、正規の動作中にコンピュータが使
用するのと同じスワップ区画である。
ブロック４０においては、転送側コンピュータ及び受取
シ側コンピュータのネットワークアドレスと、２つのコ
ンピュータの間に位置すると考えられるゲートウェイの
アドレスとをシステムに入力し、ブロック５０では、そ
れら２つのコンピュータを接続するためのネットワーク
ルーチンを実行する。たとえば、５ｕｎＯ８の場合、Ｎ
ＦＳ　　であるネットワーク環境を初期設定するために
、シェルスクリプトルーチンを使用する。ＮＦＳハ、１
つのコンピュータシステムがネットワーク中の別のコン
ピュータシステムの遠隔ディスクスペースをマウントし
、そのディスクスペースを、局所的に装着されたディス
クスペースであるかのように使用することを可能にする
ユーティリティである（ＮＦＳのさらに詳細な説明につ
いては、Ｒ，Ｓａｎｄｂｅｒｇ、　　Ｄ−Ｇｏｌｄｂｅ
ｒｇ、　Ｓ、　Ｋｌｅｉｍａｎ　。

転送（１１１コンピユータシステムがネットワークを介
して受取り側コンピュータシステムに接続された後、ブ
ロック６０においては、転送側コンピュータシステムか
ら受取り側コンピュータシステムへ新たなオペレーティ
ングシステムのコピーを転送する。８ｕｏＯ８−ＮＦＳ
　環境の下では、複写プロセスを簡略にするために、マ
ウント指令を使用して、転送側コンピュータシステムの
ファイルシステムを受取シ側コンピュータシステムのル
ートディレクトリにマウントし、ＵＮＩＸ　　ＴＡＲ指
令を実行シて、オペレーティングシステムを表わすファ
イルを転送する。ＴＡＲ指令は、複数のファイルを、Ｔ
ＡＲファイルと呼ばれる単一のファイルアーカイブにア
ーカイブする。それを取出す。
ＴＡＢファイルは、通常、磁気テープに蓄積されるが、
どのようなファイルであっても良い。この実施例の場合
には、ファイルは、実質的に、２つのＴＡＢプロセスの
間の情報の流れである。その−万のＴＡＲプロセスは転
送側コンピュータシステムにあるオペレーティングシス
テムファイルを読取り、他方のＴＡＲプロセスは情報の
流れからファイルを取出して、それらを受取り側コンピ
ュータシステムのディスクに書込み、ファイルのディレ
クトリ、位置及び記憶保護を転送側コンピュータシステ
ムにあった通りに再作成するものである。
以上、本発明を好ましい実施例、すなわち、ＵＮＩＸオ
ペレーティングシステム、特にＮＦＳを２ンする８ｕｎ
　Ｏ８に関連して説明し良が、数多くの代替構成、変形
、変更及び利用が当業者には明白であることは自明であ
る。脣に、以上の説明を参考にして、多様な型のコンピ
ュータ、オペレーティングシステム及びネットワークを
本発明の方法に適用できることは自明である。

    【特許請求の範囲】
  1. （１）複数のコンピュータを含み、各コンピュータが中
    央処理装置（ＣＰＵ）と、メモリと、ディスクドライブ
    などのオフライン記憶装置と、入出力装置と、ディスク
    ドライブに位置するオペレーティングシステムとを具備
    するようなコンピュータネットワークにおいて、第２の
    コンピュータに記憶されたオペレーティングシステムか
    ら第１のコンピュータにオペレーティングシステムをロ
    ードする方法であつて、 メモリに常駐すべきルートディレクトリをセツトする過
    程と； メモリに常駐できるように小さなサイズを有し、ファイ
    ルの複写と、ファイルディレクトリの作成と、ディスク
    のフォーマット規定と、ネットワーク接続及びネットワ
    ークにおける動作の成立とを実行させる指令から構成さ
    れるオペレーティングシステムのサブセットを第１のコ
    ンピュータのメモリにロードする過程と； メモリにロードされたオペレーテイングシステムのサブ
    セットを使用して、第１のコンピュータを初期設定し且
    つ始動する過程と； 第１のコンピュータが第２のコンピュータと通信するこ
    とができるように、第１のコンピュータとネットワーク
    との通信を成立させる過程と；第２のコンピュータから
    、オペレーティングシステムを表わすファイルを複写し
    、そのオペレーティングシステムファイルを第２のコン
    ピュータからネットワークを介して第１のコンピュータ
    のデイスクドライブへ転送する過程とから成り、それに
    より、第１のコンピュータで現在ラン中であるオペレー
    ティングシステムをそこなうことなく、第１のコンピュ
    ータのディスクに、第２のコンピユータから転送された
    オペレーティングシステムが再び書込まれる方法。
  2. （２）複数のコンピュータを含み、各コンピユータが中
    央処理装置（ＣＰＵ）と、メモリと、ディスクドライブ
    などのオフライン記憶装置と、入出力装置と、ディスク
    ドライブに位置するオペレーティングシステムとを具備
    するようなコンピュータネットワークにおいて、第２の
    コンピュータに記憶されたオペレーティングシステムか
    ら第１のコンピュータにオペレーティングシステムをロ
    ードする方法であつて、 メモリに常駐すべきルートディレクトリをセットする過
    程と； メモリに常駐できるように小さなサイズを有し、ファイ
    ルの複写と、ファイルディレクトリの作成と、ディスク
    のフォーマット規定と、ネットワーク接続及びネットワ
    ークにおける動作の成立とを実行させる指令から構成さ
    れる第１のオペレーティングシステムのサブセットを第
    １のコンピュータのメモリにロードする過程と； メモリにロードされたオペレーティングシステムのサブ
    セットを使用して、第１のコンピユータを初期設定し且
    つ始動する過程と； 第１のコンピュータが第２のコンピュータと通信するこ
    とができるように、第１のコンピユータとネットワーク
    との通信を成立させる過程と；第２のコンピュータから
    、第２のオペレーティングシステムを表わすフアイルを
    複写し、その第２のオペレーティングシステムファイル
    を第２のコンピュータからネットワークを介して第１の
    コンピュータのデイスクドライブへ転送する過程とから
    成り、 それにより、第１のコンピュータで現在ラン中である第
    １のオペレーティングシステムをそこなうことなく、第
    １のコンピュータのディスクに、第２のコンピュータか
    ら転送された第２のオペレーティングシステムが再び書
    込まれる方法。
