Description

【発明の詳細な説明】 〔産業上の利用分野〕 本発明は、ネツトワーク環境の中で接続されたコンピ
ユータシステムにオペレーテイングシステムをロード
し、そのオペレーテイングシステムを更新する方法に関
する。
〔従来の技術及び発明が解決しようとする問題点〕
オペレーテイングシステムは、コンピユータシステム
内部にあつてプロセツサ，主記憶装置,2次記憶装置及び
入出力装置などの機器資源の制御を管理する複数のプロ
グラムモジユールから構成される。それらのモジユール
はコンフリクトを解決し、性能を最適化しようとし、ま
た、コンピユータの有効利用を簡単に行えるようにす
る。プログラムモジユールはユーザープログラムと、物
理的なコンピユータハードウエアとの間でインタフエー
スとして作用する。オペレーテイングシステムをロード
するために、テープドライブなどの入出力装置はテープ
ドライブに常駐しているプログラムを実行し、新たなオ
ペレーテイングシステムデータをコンピユータ内のメモ
リの所定の領域に入力する。オペレーテイングシステム
のロード中に、そのオペレーテイングシステムがロード
されるデイスクスペースは消去され、そこに、新たなオ
ペレーテイングシステムデータが再び書込まれる。シス
テムにロードすべき情報の量は多く、テープから情報を
読取つて、ダウンロードするのに、１時間半から２時間
を要する。
今日の分散型システムが出現する前は、単一のコンピ
ユータシステムで複数のユーザーにサービスしていたと
考えられる。従つて、オペレーテイングシステムを更新
すべきときが来たならば、システム管理者は新たなオペ
レーテイングシステムを単一のコンピユータシステムに
ロードするだけで良いことになる。しかしながら、今日
の分散処理環境においては、コンピユータが他のコンピ
ユータとネツトワーク接続されるように、各ユーザーが
独自のオペレーテイングシステムを伴なう独自のコンピ
ユータを有することが全く当たり前になつている。従つ
て、オペレーテイングシステムの更新が実行される場
合、ネツトワーク内の個々のコンピユータシステムに関
して、入出力装置からオペレーテイングシステムをロー
ドするプロセスを実行しなればならない。複数のコンピ
ユータシステムの更新は非常に長い時間を必要とし、１
週間に１度程度の割合でオペレーテイングシステムの更
新が実行されるようなオペレーテイングシステム開発環
境の下では、更新はますます厄介になる。そこで、分散
環境においては、オペレーテイングシステムをテープか
ら１つの機械にロードし、その後そのオペレーテイング
システムのコピーを、ネツトワークを介して、ネツトワ
ークに接続されている各コンピユータシステムへ伝送す
るのが好ましいと考えられる。
オペレーテイングシステムを１つのシステムからネツ
トワークを介して別のシステムへ転送すれば、オペレー
テイングシステムをロードするために必要な時間は短縮
される。しかしながら、ネツトワーク環境の中でコンピ
ユータにオペレーテイングシステムをロードするために
は、コンピユータシステムをブートし、コンピユータハ
ードウエアによりアクセス可能であり且つネツトワーク
通信が可能であるオペレーテイングシステムをコンピユ
ータシステムがランしている状態にしなければならな
い。なお、新たなオペレーテイングシステムがコンピユ
ータにロードされたときには、デイスクスペースには改
めてデータが書込まれることになるので、コンピユータ
ハードウエアにより並行して使用されている既存のオペ
レーテイングシステムは重ね書きされ、そこなわれてし
まうことを忘れてはならない。現在使用中のオペレーテ
イングシステムに対する重ね書きの問題を回避する方法
の１つは、ネツトワーク中の別のコンピユータに常駐す
るオペレーテイングシステムによつてロード又は更新さ
れるべきコンピユータシステムをブートするものであ
る。すなわち、コンピユータハードウエアがオンされた
ときに、ネツトワークを介して信号を送信し、アクセス
すべきオペレーテイングシステムを伴なうコンピユータ
ハードウエアがその信号に応答する。そこで、遠隔ネツ
トワークコンピユータは、自身の局所デイスクに、使用
すべきコンピユータのためのデイスク区画を作成する。
次に、ネツトワークコンピユータに位置するオペレーテ
イングシステムを使用して、更新すべきコンピユータシ
ステムをブートする。コンピユータがブートされ、ネツ
トワークにおいて活動状態になつたならば、新たなバー
ジヨンのオペレーテイングシステムをネツトワークコン
ピユータシステムからダウンロードすることができる。
しかしながら、そのような方法を利用するためには、
特定のコンピユータがオンされたときに、指定のネツト
ワークコンピユータにおいてアクセス可能であるオペレ
ーテイングシステムを使用してそのコンピュータをブー
トすべきであることがわかるように、ネツトワークを構
成し且つ初期設定しなければならない。従つて、ネツト
ワークの構成が変わつた場合又は当初特定されたのとは
違うネツトワークコンピユータからブートアツプするこ
とが望まれる場合には、ネツトワークパラメータを変更
する必要がある。
〔問題点を解決するための手段〕
従つて、本発明の目的は、ネツトワーク環境の中で１
つのコンピユータから別のコンピユータへオペレーテイ
ングシステムをロードする方法を提供することである。
本発明の方法においては、ネツトワーク通信を支援す
るオペレーテイングシステムのサブセツトを、受取り側
コンピユータのメモリに作成されたルート区画にロード
する。このようにして、受取り側コンピユータシステム
がメモリ常駐オペレーテイングシステムからブートされ
てランし始め、ネツトワークに接続されたならば、受取
り側コンピユータシステムがそのデイスクにロードされ
るべき新たなバージヨンのオペレーテイングシステムを
転送側コンピユータシステムから受取る準備は完了した
ことになる。受取り側コンピユータで現在利用中のオペ
レーテイングシステムはデイスクからではなく、メモリ
からランしているので、従来のように、新たなバージヨ
ンのオペレーテイングシステムをダウンロードするとき
に現在利用中のオペレーテイングシステムが重ね書きさ
れるという問題は起こらない。さらに、ネツトワーク中
に配置された２つのコンピユータの間のデータ転送速度
は、テープドライブなどの外部入出力装置とコンピユー
タとの間のデータ転送速度よりはるかに速いため、オペ
レーテイングシステムをダウンロードするのに要する時
間は短縮される。また、転送側コンピユータでオペレー
テイングシステムが更新されても、それに伴なつて、受
取り側コンピユータにおいて更新バージヨンのオペレー
テイングシステムを導入するためのテープを作成する必
要はない。
〔実施例〕
以下、添付の図面の参照して本発明を詳細に説明す
る。
同じネツトワークに位置している１つのコンピユータ
（転送側コンピユータ）から別のコンピユータ（受取り
側コンピユータ）へ、オペレーテイングシステム全体を
転送することができる。この能力は、受取り側コンピユ
ータのRAMに設定されたルートデイレクトリにオペレー
テイングシステムのサブセツトをロードすることによ
り、オペレーテイングシステムフアイルを受信できるよ
うにデイスクを解放するという方法で、利用可能とな
る。RAMにロードされるべきオペレーテイングシステム
のサブセツトには、転送側コンピユータと、受取り側コ
ンピユータとの通信を可能にするようにコンピユータを
ネツトワークに接続し且つコンピユータをネツトワーク
で動作させるために必要な指令が含まれる。RAMのルー
トデイレクトリを設定して、RAMにオペレーテイングシ
ステムを記載することにより、ラン中のオペレーテイン
グシステムに関連する全てのデータはメモリ内に収めら
れるようになるので、デイスクに導入されているシステ
ムの保全性は確保される。
以下の説明を通して、本発明の方法はUNIX（UNIXはAT
＆Ｔの登録商標である）オペレーテイングシステムに関
して、特に、Sunオペレーテイングシステム,Sun OS（Su
n OSはSun Microsystems,Inc.（カリフオルニア州マウ
ンテン・ビユー）の商標である）に関して説明される。
しかしながら、以下の説明からも明らかになるように、
本発明の方法は、ネツトワーク環境用のオペレーテイン
グシステムの大半のものと関連して利用可能である。
ネツトワークを経てオペレーテイングシステムを転送
するプロセスは、第１図のフローチヤートに示されてい
る。ブロツク20において、RAMに導入されるべきルート
デイレクトリを設定し、オペレーテイングシステムのサ
ブセツトをメモリにロードする。これは、通常、システ
ムをパワーアツプし、ルート装置をRAMとすべくリセツ
トすることができ且つオペレーテイングシステムをRAM
に導入すべく再び初期設定することができるようにオペ
レーテイングシステムのデフオルトローデイングを中断
することによつて実行される。通常、オペレーテイング
システムのサブセツトは、テープなどの装置から、RAM
へ転送される。しかしながら、UNIXシステムの場合、オ
ペレーテイングシステムのサブセツトは単純フアイル転
送プロトコル（TFTP）を使用して、ネツトワークを介し
て接続している別のコンピユータから転送しても良い。
この場合TFTPはフアイルを１つの装置から他の装置へネ
ツトワークを介して転送する低レベル、装置特定並びに
アドレス特定のプロトコルである。
オペレーテイングシステムのサブセツトは、システム
をブートすると共に、フアイル複写、フアイルの再名前
付け、フアイルのリンク、デイレクトリ作成などの基本
機能を実行するために必要である指令のみから構成され
る。さらに、サブセツトは、デイスクのフォーマツトを
規定し、フアイルシステムをマウントし、ネツトワーク
通信を確立し且つ維持するための指令を含んでいなけれ
ばならない。従つて、この実施例においては、UNIXオペ
レーテイングシステムのサブセツトはRAMにロードされ
ても良い。ただし、RAMにロードされるオペレーテイン
グシステムは、受取り側コンピユータのデイスクへ転送
されるべきオペレーテイングシステムのサブセツトであ
る必要はない。Sun OSではMUNIXのスーパーセツトがRAM
にロードされるのが好ましい。MUNIXは、新たなコンピ
ユータシステムでデイスク区画を作成するために使用さ
れる非常に小さなUNIXオペレーテイングシステムのサブ
セツトである。しかしながら、本発明のシステムで使用
されるMUNIXのバージヨンは、システムをネツトワーク
に接続させて、システムがネツトワークで活動できるよ
うにする、すなわち、システムがデータを送受信できる
ようにする追加指令を含んでいる。この追加指令はSun
OS環境において、「クライアント−サイドNFS」として
参照する能力をコンピユータに与える。
オペレーテイングシステムのサブセツトがRAMにロー
ドされた後、ブロツク30において、メモリに常駐してい
るオペレーテイングシステムを使用してシステムをブー
トすると共に、新たなオペレーテイングシステムをロー
ドすべき局所デイスクをクリアする。さらに、オペレー
テイングシステムが記憶される２つのデイスク区画を作
成するのが好ましい。第１の区画はルートデイレクトリ
のサブデイレクトリにリンク、すなわち、マウントさ
れ、第２の区画は第１の区画にマウントされる。このよ
うに、オペレーテイングシステムがRAMに常駐するルー
トデイレクトリのサブデイレクトリにロードされるとき
に、データは第１のデイスク区画、又は第２のデイスク
区画へ適切に転送されることになる。また、プロセス中
に指令が実行されている間に、データのスワツピングを
実行するために、別のデイスク区画を作成することが好
ましい。このデイスク区画は、オペレーテイングシステ
ムの転送中にあるいくつかの指令が実行されている間に
必要になると思われる余分のスクラツチメモリを構成す
る。通常、これは、世紀の動作中にコンピユータが使用
するのと同じスワツプ区画である。
ブロツク40においては、転送側コンピユータ及び受取
り側コンピユータのネツトワークアドレスと、２つのコ
ンピユータの間に位置すると考えられるゲートウエイの
アドレスとをシステムに入力し、ブロツク50では、それ
ら２つのコンピユータを接続するためのネツトワークル
ーチンを実行する。たとえば、Sun OSの場合、NFSであ
るネツトワーク環境を初期設定するために、シエルスク
リプトルーチンを使用する。NFSは、１つのコンピユー
タシステムがネツトワーク中の別のコンピユータシステ
ムの遠隔デイスクスペースのマウントし、そのデイスク
スペースを、局所的に装着されたデイスクスペースであ
るかのように使用することを可能にするユーテイリテイ
である（NFSのさらに詳細な説明については、R.Sandber
g,D.Goldberg,S.Kleiman,D.Walsh,B.Lyonの「Design an
d Implememtation of the Sun Network File System,US
ENIX」1985年夏の119〜130ページを参照）。
転送側コンピユータシステムがネツトワークを介して
受取り側コンピユータシステムに接続された後、ブロツ
ク60においては、転送側コンピユータシステムから受取
り側コンピユータシステムへ新たなオペレーテイングシ
ステムのコピーを転送する。Suo OS−NFS環境の下で
は、複写プロセスを簡略にするために、マウント指令を
使用して、転送側コンピユータシステムのフアイルシス
テムを受取り側コンピユータシステムのルートデイレク
トリにマウントし、UNIX TAR指令を実行して、オペレー
テイングシステムを表わすフアイルを転送する。TAR指
令は、複数のフアイルを、TARフアイルと呼ばれる単一
のフアイルアーカイブにアーカイブする。それを取出
す。TARフアイルは、通常、磁気テープに蓄積される
が、どよのうなフアイルであつても良い。この実施例の
場合には、フアイルは、実質的に、２つのTARプロセス
の間の情報の流れである。その一方のTARプロセスは転
送側コンピユータシステムにあるオペレーテイングシス
テムフアイルを読取り、他方のTARプロセスは情報の流
れからフアイルを取出して、それらを受取り側コンピユ
ータシステムのデイスクに書込み、フアイルのデイレク
トリ、位置及び記憶保護を転送側コンピユータシステム
にあつた通りに再作成するものである。
以上、本発明を好ましい実施例、すなわち、UNIXオペ
レーテイングシステム、特にNFSをランするSun OSに関
連して説明したが、数多くの代替構成，変形，変更及び
利用が当業者には明白であることは自明である。特に、
以上の説明を参考にして、多様な型のコンピユータ，オ
ペレーテイングシステム及びネツトワークを本発明の方
法に適用できることは自明である。

    (57)【特許請求の範囲】
  1. 【請求項１】複数のコンピュータを含み、各コンピュー
    タが中央処理装置（CPU）と、メモリと、オフライン記
    憶装置と、入出力装置と、デイスクドライブに記憶した
    オペレーテイングシステムとを具備するようなコンピュ
    ータネツトワークにおいて、上記複数のコンピュータの
    第２コンピュータから上記複数のコンピュータの第１コ
    ンピュータに転送オペレーテイングシステムをロードす
    る方法であって、 第１コンピュータのメモリにルートデイレクトリをセツ
    トする過程と； 第１コンピュータのオフライン記憶装置から第１コンピ
    ュータのメモリに、メモリに常駐できるように小さなサ
    イズを有し、フアイルを複写し、フアイルデイレクトリ
    を作成し、デイスクドライブをフォーマツトし、且つネ
    ツトワーク接続及びネツトワークにおける動作の成立と
    を実行させる指令から構成されるサブセツトオペレーテ
    イングシステムをロードする過程と； 上記サブセツトオペレーテイングシステムを使用して、
    第１のコンピュータを初期設定し且つ始動する過程と； デイスクドライブをフォーマツトし且つフアイルデイレ
    クトリを作成する指令を実行し、これによってルートデ
    イレクトリにベースを有する第１コンピュータのデイス
    クドライブ上にフアイルシステムを形成するために、第
    １コンピュータのデイスクドライブを初期設定し且つ始
    動する過程と； 第２のコンピュータと通信するためネツトワーク接続と
    ネツトワークにおける動作を形成する指令を実行するこ
    とによって、第１コンピュータとネツトワークとの通信
    を成立させる過程と； 第２コンピュータの転送オペレーテイングシステムのオ
    ペレーテイングシステムファイルを複写し、第１コンピ
    ュータのフアイルを複写する指令を実行することによっ
    て、第１コンピュータのドライブ上に形成されたフアイ
    ルシステム内にネツトワークを介して第２コンピュータ
    から上記転送オペレーテイングシステムの複写をロード
    する過程とから成り、 それにより、第１コンピュータのデイスクドライブは第
    １コンピュータのメモリに記憶されたサブセットオペレ
    ーテイングシステムをそこなうことなく、第２コンピュ
    ータからロードされている転送オペレーテイングシステ
    ムの複写で書き替えられることを特徴とする方法。
