Description

【発明の詳細な説明】 産業上の利用分野 本発明は、液体を吐出させ被記録物上に文字や図形を記
録させるインクジェット記録装置のインクジェット記録
ヘッドに関するものである。
従来の技術 最近、カラーのハードコピーの要望が、コンピュータの
発達、普及にともない強まってきている。
これに対する有力な記録方法の一つとして、インクジェ
ット記録方法がある。このインクジェット記録方法は、
高品位記録、低騒音、ランニングコストの面で優れてお
゛す、その方式も多種に及んでいる。その中の一つに圧
電素子を用いたものがあり、その代表的なものに特公昭
53−12138号公報に示された構造のものが知られ
ている。
以下、第3図(a)、(b)を参照して、従来の圧電素
子を用いたインクジェット記録ヘッドについて説明する
第3図(a)、(b)において、2は圧力室で、一方に
はインク吐出口3、他方にはインク供給路1が連通して
いる。圧力室2の一部は、圧電素子4と、金属で形成さ
れている振動板5とがはり合わされたもので構成されて
いる。いま、インク供給路1よりインクを圧力室2内に
充満させた状態で、同図(a)のように圧電素子4に正
の信号6を印加すると、圧電素子4が圧力室2側に反り
、圧力室2内の容積変化を生じさせ、その時の急激に増
加する圧力によって、インク吐出口3よりインクを飛翔
せしめる。
次に、同図(b)のように逆方向の信号61を印加する
ことによって、圧電素子4を圧力室2とは反対方向に反
らせ、圧力室2内の圧力を急激に減少せしめることによ
り、インク供給路1よりインクを圧力室2内に強制的に
補給する。この動作の際に、インク吐出口3より空気が
圧力室2内に吸入されにくくするために、インク吐出口
3の径をインク供給路1より十分に小さくした構造にし
である。
なお、同図(′b)に示した逆方向の信号6/を加える
ことによる動作を省略するようにしても、同図(a)の
動作が終了すると、圧電素子4が元の平行状態に戻るた
め、同図(b)の作用が程度の差はあるにしても行われ
る 発明が解決しようとする課題 しかし、以上のような構成では、圧電素子4の変位量の
関係から圧電素子4の大きさがある程度必要であるため
、構造が簡単な割には、多数ノズルを有するマルチノズ
ルヘッドをコンパクトな形状で製造するには不都合であ
った。又、圧電素子4を駆動させるためには、100V
前後の信号電圧が必要であるため、駆動用電気回路の負
担が大きかった。
本発明は、上記従来の課題を解決するもので、構造が簡
単で、多数ノズルをコンパクトで高密度に配し、かつ低
い駆動電圧で動作させることが可能であるインクジェッ
ト記録ヘッドを提供することを目的とするものである。
課題を解決するための手段 本発明は、インク吐出口に隣接した圧力室のインク圧力
発生用の変位素子として、形状記憶合金変位素子を2枚
重ねたものを用い、かつ加熱あるいは冷却手段をその部
分に配することにより、上記目的を達成するものである
作用 本発明は、上記構成において、信号に応じて加熱あるい
は冷却素子を動作させることによって、形状記憶合金変
位素子に変位を与え、それによって圧力室内のインクに
圧力を印加し、圧力室に連通したインク吐出口よりイン
クを飛翔させるようにする。
実施例 以下に、本発明の実施例について図面を参照しながら説
明する。
第1図(a)、(b)は本発明の一実施例におけるイン
クシエンド記録ヘッドの断面図である。圧力室12の一
方はインク吐出口13、他方は、インク供給口11と連
通している。また圧力室12を形成している壁の一部は
、形状記憶合金変位素子14と15がはり合わされもし
くは重ね合わせて固定されて構成され、圧力室12側に
は加熱素子16を配した構造となっている。形状記憶合
金変位素子15は、加熱すると圧力室12側に反る特性
を有し、形状記憶合金変位素子14は、逆に外側に反る
特性を有するものである。
上記構成において、以下その動作を説明する。
信号19が加熱素子I6に印加されると、形状記憶合金
変位素子15がまず加熱されて、圧、刃室】2側に変位
し、圧力室12のインク圧力を上昇してインク吐出口1
3よりインクを液滴の形状で飛翔させる(同図(a)参
照)。次に、信号が切れると、加熱が止まるので形状記
憶合金変位素子15は、圧力室12内のインクにより冷
却されるが外側の形状記憶合金変位素子】4は、形状記
憶合金変位素子15より冷却時間が遅れるために、余熱
で圧力室12とは反対方向に反る。その結果全体として
みた変位素子(形状記憶合金変位素子14.15)は、
元の平行状態に戻るか、逆に同図(b)に示しだように
外側にやや反る状態となる。形状記憶合金変位素子15
のみでは加熱し変位させた後、冷却しても元の状態には
戻らない。従って逆方向の変位特性を有するように形状
記憶合金変位素子14を重ね合わせて動作させることに
より同図(b)の状態をつくシ出すものである。この時
にインク供給口11よりインクが圧力室12内に供給さ
れる。これを繰り返すことにより、インクジェット記録
ヘッドとして機能させることができる。
なお、加熱素子16の代わりに熱を吸収する素子、すな
わち冷却素子を用いても同様の動作を行わせることがで
きる。
第2図(a)、(b)は、本発明の他の実施例を示すも
ので、基本的動作は、第1図(a)、(b)に示したも
のと同様である。第2図(a)、(b)の実施例が第1
図(a)、(b)のそれと異なる点は、変位素子として
の外側の形状記憶合金変位素子14の表面にも加熱素子
17を配したことである。この加熱素子17の動きは、
信号19に応じて加熱素子16を加熱させ変位素子を圧
力室12側に変位させた状態(同図(a))から、同図
(b)に示すように信号19よりやや時間遅れのある信
号18を加熱素子17に印加し、形状記憶合金変位素子
14を強制的に外側に変位させることにより (そのよ
うな特性をもつ形状記憶合金変位素子を用いる)、応答
性、吐出量の増加を図ったものである。
また、実施例には示さなかったが、加熱素子の代わりに
発熱と熱吸収の両方の機能を有するペルティエ素子を用
いると、さらに応答性が上昇する。
この時には、両方の形状記憶合金変位素子の間に薄い断
熱の層を設けると効果的である。
この形状記憶合金変位素子は、変位量がきわめて大きく
とれるため、圧電素子のような大きな面積を必要としな
い。従って高密度のコンパクトなマルチノズルヘッドが
可能となる。さらに、駆動電圧を圧電素子の場合よりは
十分に低く50v以下にすることができるので駆動用電
気回路の負担も軽減できる。
以上本実施例によれば、圧力発生素子(変位素子)とし
て、形状記憶合金変位素子を2枚重ねたものを用いるこ
とにより、コンパクトで低駆動電圧のインクジェット記
録ヘッドを提供することが可能となる。
本発明の実施例は第1図、第2図に示したように、シン
グルキャビデのインクジェット記録ヘッドに応用したも
のであるが、例えば、電子通信学会技術研究会IE83
−63 (1983,9,3) ”  メタルダイヤフ
ラム型インクジェットプリンタ″に記載されているよう
な、インクジェット記録ヘッドのように、圧電素子を用
いたヘッド全てに応用可能なことはいう捷でもない。
発明の効果 以上のように本発明は、形状記憶合金変位素子を用いて
いるので、コンパクトで低駆動電圧のインクジェット記
録ヘッドの提供を可能とするものである。

Claims (2)

    【特許請求の範囲】
  1. (1)インクに圧力を発生させるための圧力室と、前記
    圧力室で発生した圧力によってインクが吐出されるイン
    ク吐出口と、前記圧力室の一部に隣接もしくは前記圧力
    室を構成する一部であって、変位方向が異なるように重
    ね合わされた少なくとも2枚の形状記憶合金材料の変位
    素子を備え、前記変位素子の少なくとも一方に、熱を加
    える手段もしくは熱を吸収する手段を有することを特徴
    とするインクジェット記録ヘッド。
  2. (2)熱を加えあるいは熱を吸収する手段はペルティエ
    素子であることを特徴とする請求項1記載のインクジェ
    ット記録ヘッド。
