Abstract

(57)【要約】 【目的】 本発明は、形状記憶合金を用いるインクジェ
ットヘッドの信頼性の向上と、小型化と、高密度化とを
目的とする。 【構成】 駆動回路5により、形状規制体3により上方
に撓んだ形状に規制されこの形状規制体3と形状記憶合
金2を積層固定してなる加圧振動体4を加熱する。これ
により形状記憶合金2が変態温度に達し、下方に撓んだ
形状に変化し、インク室1の容積を縮小させ内部のイン
ク液を加圧し、インク液をノズル7より射出させる。駆
動手段による加熱が途絶えると、加圧振動体4は形状規
制体3により加熱以前の形状に規制される。以上を繰り
返し行ない印字を行なうものである。

Description

【発明の詳細な説明】
【0001】
【産業上の利用分野】本発明は、インクジェット記録装
置に用いられるインクジェットヘッドに係わり、特に、
複数のインク噴出ノズルを有するマルチノズルタイプの
インクジェットヘッドに関するものである。
【0002】
【従来の技術】ドロップ・オン・デマンド型のインクジ
ェットプリンタの方式として、印字情報信号に応じて、
インク室に付設された加圧振動手段である圧電素子にパ
ルス電圧を印加し、上記圧電素子を変形させ、インク室
内のインク液圧を変化させて、インク室と連通するヘッ
ド先端のノズルから、インク液滴を噴出させて、対向す
る記録用紙等の記録媒体に印字をする方法が知られてい
る。
【0003】この様な、マルチノズルタイプのインクジ
ェットプリンタでは、記録密度の向上と、ヘッドの小型
化が望まれている。
【0004】ところが、圧電素子の電気−機械変換効率
が低い為に、圧電素子の大きさを小さくできず、高密度
で多数のノズル配置や、ヘッドの小型化が達成されてい
ない。
【0005】現在、インクジェットヘッドの小型化と高
密度化を実現させるため、圧電素子を用いた加圧振動手
段に代る新たな加圧振動手段が試みられている。例え
ば、特開昭63−57251号公報に開示されたインク
ジェットヘッドのように、機械的な変形の大きい形状記
憶合金と、加熱手段との組合せによる加圧振動手段によ
って、加圧部の面積を縮小させて、高密度で小型のイン
クジェットヘッドを実現しようというものがある。

【発明が解決しようとする課題】ところが、上記の様に
形状記憶合金を用いた場合は、変態温度以上に加熱され
て変形が無くなるのは安定しているが、冷却されて初期
の記憶された変形状態に戻る際の繰り返し安定性(変形
量)に問題がある。
【0007】インクジェットヘッドの場合は、初期状態
の安定性は、インクの突出量や突出速度に影響を与える
為に、印字品質の低下を引き起こすことになる。
【0008】本発明は、形状記憶合金を用いるインクジ
ェットヘッドの信頼性の向上と、小型化と、高密度化と
を目的とする。
【0009】
【課題を解決するための手段】本発明は形状記憶合金
と、この形状記憶合金のマルテンサイト相での形状を規
制する規制手段とを積層して加圧振動手段を構成し、こ
の加圧振動手段をインク室に付設し加熱することによ
り、インク室と連通したノズルからインク液を射出する
よう構成することにより、上記目的を達成する。

【実施例】以下、図面を参照して本発明の一実施例につ
いて説明する。
【0011】図1は、図2に示される本例装置の平面図
におけるA−A線での断面図であり、同図において、1
はインク室であり、長さ100〜10000μm、幅5
0〜500μmであり、インク液で満される。
【0012】2は形状記憶合金であり、3は規制手段と
しての形状規制体であり、これらを積層固定することに
より加圧振動手段としての加圧振動体4を構成してい
る。
【0013】上記形状記憶合金としては、例えば、Ni
−Ti 系合金や、Cu −Zn −Al系合金等を用いるこ
とができる。本例ではNi −Ti 系合金を用いることと
する。
【0014】このNi −Ti 系合金の温度と硬さの温度
変化は次のとうりである。例えば、長さ40mm、幅
0.32mm、厚さ0.32mmの合金において、長さ
方向1.5mmの変位量を得るのに必要とする押付力
は、マルテンサイト相である20°Cでは約0.35N
であるが、変態温度80°Cとしてそれ以上の温度の母
相では、約1.9Nとなり、マルテンサイト相でのそれ
の5倍以上となる。
【0015】また、変態温度は、合金の組成により可変
であり、例えば、50at%Ni での変態温度は約80
°Cであり、Ni の組成が0.1at%ずれると、10
°C低くなる。
【0016】以上のような特性のNi −Ti 系合金より
なる形状記憶合金2の厚さは、50〜1000μm程
度、面積は、0.1〜10mm2 程度であり、室温での
状態、いわゆるマルテンサイト相での形状は、図1に示
すように上方に撓んだ形状であり、変態温度を80°C
とし、それより高い温度の母相では、図1の破線に示す
ように平面形となるように形成されている。
【0017】形状規制体3は、変態温度以上の形状記憶
合金の変形を妨げず、変態温度以下では形状記憶合金を
初期状態の形状に規定するのに必要な、構成及び材料と
厚みが選ばれる。例えば、りん青銅やステンレス等の金
属薄板等が適しており、本例ではりん青銅の薄板を用い
ることとする。
【0018】形状規制体3は、上記形状記憶合金2の変
態温度以下の形状(図1の例では、上方にたわんだ形
状)に成形されている。
【0019】上記形状記憶合金2と形状規制体3を積層
し構成された加圧振動体4は、本例では、低温時(変態
温度以下)にインク室1の容積を拡大する方向に変形し
(図では、上方にたわみ)、加熱時にはインク室1の容
積を縮小するよう変形し上記インク室1の中のインク液
を加圧する。
【0020】5は加熱手段としての駆動回路であり、制
御回路(図示せず。)よりの印字信号を受け、加圧振動
体4に1KHz の矩形波を通電し、加圧振動体4を加熱
する。
【0021】なお加熱方法は、ヒーターを形状記憶合金
ひとつひとつに設けても良いが、直接通電して加熱する
方が、ヒーターが不要である為に、コスト的にも、小型
・高密度化にも有利である。
【0022】通電の場合、直流駆動でも良いが、寿命を
長くする為には、1KHz 程度の矩形波を用いる方が良
い。
【0023】6は供給手段としてのインク流路であり、
深さは10〜100μmである。これはインク室1に連
通しおり、インク室1にインク液を供給する。
【0024】7はノズルであり、直径10〜100μm
である。これはインク室に連通しており加圧振動体4に
より加圧されたインク液を射出する。
【0025】インク室1、インク流路6、ノズル7等
は、プラスチックやガラスやセラミックや金属材料等
を、射出成形やエッチング等の手段で形成する。
【0026】次に動作について、図1をを参照しながら
説明する。
【0027】まず、インク流路6よりインク室1内にイ
ンク液が供給される。
【0028】室温(変態温度80°C以下)において、
形状記憶合金2は、形状規制体3の形状に規制され、所
定の形状(図1に示す、上方に撓んだ形状)を示し、加
圧振動体4は、インク室1の体積を拡大する方向にあ
る。
【0029】次に印字情報信号に応じた駆動回路5は加
圧振動体4に1KHz の矩形波を通電し、これを加熱す
る。この加熱により加圧振動体4が変態温度80°Cよ
り高い温度に達すると、形状記憶合金2は、撓みの変形
をなくし平面状態となろうとし、一方形状規制体3はそ
れを妨げる方向に働くが、形状記憶合金2の回復力の方
が大きいため、形状記憶合金2は平面状態に近くなり、
加圧振動体4はインク室1の容積を縮小させインク液を
加圧し、その結果インク滴がノズル7より射出される。
【0030】インク滴は、記録用紙と接触し吸収され
る。
【0031】加熱が終了すると、形状記憶合金2はイン
クや周囲の材料と接触し、冷却されて、変態温度80°
C以下になりその押付力が弱くなり、形状規制体3によ
って強制的に初期の形状に戻り、インク室の容積を拡大
する方向(図1では、上方に撓み)に戻り、素早く初期
状態となる。
【0032】この繰り返しによって、記録媒体上に印字
が可能となる。
【0033】なお、本発明のインクジェットヘッドで
は、形状記憶合金が、常温でインク室の容積を拡大する
方向に撓み、加熱され変態温度以上で、その撓みが無く
なりインクを加圧する方式であったが、それに限るもの
でなく、様々な変形が考えられる。
【0034】例えば、常温にあってはインク室の容積を
拡大する方向すなわちここでは上方に撓ませ、かつ加熱
されることでインク室の容積を縮小する方向すなわちこ
こでは下方に撓ませることにより加圧することも可能で
あり、また常温にあっては平面形をなし、加熱されるこ
とでインク室の容積を縮小する方向、ここでは下方に撓
ませることにより加圧することも可能である。
【0035】あるいは、常温ではインク室の容積を縮小
する方向に撓みをもたせ、加熱によりインク室の容積を
拡大する方向すなわち上方に撓むように構成しても同様
の効果が可能である。
【0036】この場合、加熱時には形状記憶合金の押付
力が形状規制体のそれを上回り、インク室の容積を拡大
させる。加熱が途絶えると温度が下がり、形状記憶合金
はマルテンサイト相となり、形状規制体の押付力が形状
記憶合金のそれを上回り、形状規制体の押付力により、
加圧振動体はインク室の容積を縮小する方向に撓み、イ
ンク室内のインク液を加圧し、ノズルより射出する。
【0037】ここで、インク室の最大容積となる形状は
形状記憶合金の母相により、規定され、最小容積となる
形状は形状規制体により規定されるので、どちらも安定
した形状となる。これにより、インク液の射出に要する
インク室の容積変化量は安定したものとなり、上記の例
と同様の効果を得ることが可能である。

【発明の効果】本発明において、加圧振動手段は、形状
記憶合金と規制手段を積層固定してなるものである。こ
のように形状記憶合金に、そのマルテンサイト相での形
状を規制する規制手段を積層固定することにより、マル
テンサイト相における形状維持が不安定となるという形
状記憶合金の欠点を補い、マルテンサイト相および母相
とも安定した形状維持を行なえるようにしたものであ
る。これらにより加圧振動手段によるインク液の加圧に
要する容積変化量は安定したものとなる。
【0039】以上により、小型で、信頼性の高いインク
ジェットヘッドが実現可能となる。

    【特許請求の範囲】
  1. 【請求項1】 インク室と、 インク室に付設された形状記憶合金と、この形状記憶合
    金のマルテンサイト相での形状を規制する規制手段とを
    積層してなる加圧振動手段と、 上記加圧振動手段を加熱する加熱手段と、 上記インク室と連通するノズルと、 上記インク室にインク液を供給する供給手段とを具備す
    るインクジェットヘッド。
