[産業上の利用分野]
本発明は光ファイバコネクタとその製造方法に関する。
[従来技術の説明]
データ伝送及び音声伝送の高容量化に対するニーズの増
加により、光ファイバのアレイ(束)の使用が多くの応
用面で必要とされている。光ファイバーアレイを他の光
ファイバアレイと整合させること、あるいは、光素子と
整合させることは面倒であり、とりわけ非常に小さなコ
ア直径(約8μm)を有する単一モード光ファイバの場
合においてはなおさらである。典型的な光ファイバアレ
イ用コネクタは、光ファイバを収納する溝付きシリコン
製プラグを2つ有している。各プラグは、2個のマツチ
ングする部材で形成されており、これらは、光ファイバ
を収納するように結合される。

(発明の概要)

本発明のコネクタの一実施例が第1図と第2図に示され
ている。コネクタ(プラグ)1の各半分はブロック10

な結晶材料から形成されるのが好ましいが、その理由は
後で説明する。各主表面は溝14と15のアレイ(列)

な異方性エツチング剤にこの構造か晒され、ファイバ溝

,22が形成される。このより深い溝は側壁、例えば1
8と20を有し、この側壁はファイバ溝と同じ傾斜を有
している。それらは同一の異方性エツチング剤により、
同一の結晶面((111)面)にそって、形成されるか
らである。ファイバ溝は約98μmの深さで、隣接する
深い溝(21,22)は約500μmの深さであるのが
一般的である。
あの種のエツチング剤、例えば、エチレン・ダイアミン
・ピロカテコール(ethylene d]amine
pyrocatechol ; E D P )を用
いると、−回の工程で、2つの溝をエツチングすること
が可能である。その理由はより深い溝がエツチングされ
ている間、ファイバ溝には、マスクのアンダーカットが
余り、発生しないからである。マスクにアンダーカット
を生じさせる傾向のあるエツチング剤(例えば、K O
H)も単一工程で使用することもできる。ただし、ファ
イバ溝のマスク開口をマスクのアンダーカットを考慮し
て十分に小さくした場合である。

このガイドロッドは、プロング35と36と他のプラグ
30のブロックの端部表面の傾斜部分(図示せず)との
間に形成されるギャップ内に挿入され、プラグの前端面
同志が物理的に接触するまで行われる(二つのプラグの
バネ手段は同一であるのが一般的である)。それゆえに
ロッド25と26は二つのプラグ1と30の傾斜表面に
緊密に接触して圧入される。前述したようにロッドはプ
ラグ1のファイバと同軸なので他のプラグ30の傾斜部
分はそのプラグのファイバ溝と同じ傾斜で形成される。
30のブロックの端部表面の傾斜部分(図示せず)との
間に形成されるギャップ内に挿入され、プラグの前端面
同志が物理的に接触するまで行われる(二つのプラグの
バネ手段は同一であるのが一般的である)。それゆえに
ロッド25と26は二つのプラグ1と30の傾斜表面に
緊密に接触して圧入される。前述したようにロッドはプ
ラグ1のファイバと同軸なので他のプラグ30の傾斜部
分はそのプラグのファイバ溝と同じ傾斜で形成される。
ロッド25と26かプラグ30の傾斜部分に対向して圧
入されると、そのプラグのファイバと同軸になり、2個
のファイバアレイは完全に整合することになる。このこ
とは、両方のプラグを形成するシリコンブロックのオー
バエツチングとアンダエッチングの量にかかわらす言え
る。2本のガイドロッド25と26は一つのプラグ1に
接触して示されているが、組み合わせ前に、−本のロッ
ドが各プラグ1と30の端部表面の一つに接触していて
もよい。

のファイバアレイは完全に整合することになる。このこ
とは、両方のプラグを形成するシリコンブロックのオー
バエツチングとアンダエッチングの量にかかわらす言え
る。2本のガイドロッド25と26は一つのプラグ1に
接触して示されているが、組み合わせ前に、−本のロッ
ドが各プラグ1と30の端部表面の一つに接触していて
もよい。
本発明は、二つのファイバアレイを接続する例を用いて
記述されたが、ファイバを光素子に接続したり、単一の
ファイバ同志を接続したりするのにも本発明は適用でき
る。例えば、第4図に示されるごとく、プラグ1は、シ
リコンブロック10の一つを有して形成されており、半
導体レーザ50が、接点51.52と導波路53にそっ
て主表面上に形成されつる。もちろん、他の型の素子例
えば、レシーバも表面上に形成されうる。他のプラグ3
0も、単一ファイバ32を含みロッド25と26を保持
して形成されうる。二つのプラグが組み合わさり、ファ
イバ32はプラグ1のシリコンブロック10と11によ
って形成される溝内に予め挿入されたファイバ16に整
合し、シリコンブロック11のファイバは、溝の端部に
合さる導波路53に接触している。ロッドはプラグの1
と30の傾斜部分に、プラグ30のプロング35と36
により保持される(すなわちブロック10と11の間に
はスプリングは不要である)。かくして、ファイバ20
とレーザ50が精密に整合結合される。勿論、各プラグ
内の複数のファイバをこの種の装置で結合することもで
きる。

ファイバ同志を接続したりするのにも本発明は適用でき
る。例えば、第4図に示されるごとく、プラグ1は、シ
リコンブロック10の一つを有して形成されており、半

えば、レシーバも表面上に形成されうる。他のプラグ3
0も、単一ファイバ32を含みロッド25と26を保持

イバ32はプラグ1のシリコンブロック10と11によ
って形成される溝内に予め挿入されたファイバ16に整
合し、シリコンブロック11のファイバは、溝の端部に
合さる導波路53に接触している。ロッドはプラグの1
と30の傾斜部分に、プラグ30のプロング35と36
により保持される(すなわちブロック10と11の間に
はスプリングは不要である)。かくして、ファイバ20
とレーザ50が精密に整合結合される。勿論、各プラグ
内の複数のファイバをこの種の装置で結合することもで
きる。

Claims (10)
- (1)端面と主表面を有し、この主表面に対し傾斜側壁
を有し、その中に光ファイバ(16)を収納する溝(1
4)を有するブロック(10)と、ブロックの端面の傾
斜部分に接触して配置され、他のブロックの傾斜部分と
係合するスプライン(25または26)と、前記傾斜部
分に接触するスプラインを保持する手段(27、28、
29)とからなる光ファイバコネクタにおいて、 前記ブロック材料は各端面の主表面から伸びる側壁(1
8、20)を有し、この側壁の傾斜は溝の側壁の1つに
ほぼ等しいことを特徴とする光ファイバコネクタ。 - (2)ブロックの主表面は光ファイバアレイを収納する
複数の溝を有することを特徴とする請求項1記載の光フ
ァイバコネクタ。 - (3)請求項1記載の光ファイバコネクタは第2のブロ
ックを有し、 第2のブロックは端面と主表面を有し、かつ、この主表
面に対し傾斜側壁を有し、その中に光ファイバ(16)
を収納する溝(14)を有し、各端面の主表面から伸び
る傾斜部分を有し、この傾斜部分の傾斜は溝の側壁の1
つにほぼ等しく、さらに、第1のブロックの主表面に接
触する主表面を有し、この2個の溝は光ファイバを収納
するハウジングを形成し、スプラインは端部で2つのブ
ロックの傾斜部分に接触していることを特徴とする光フ
ァイバコネクタ。 - (4)ブロックはシリコンからなり、溝の側壁と傾斜部
分はブロックの(111)結晶面にそつてエッチングさ
れることを特徴とする請求項1記載の光ファイバコネク
タ。 - (5)光ファイバとスプラインの中心軸は直線であるこ
とを特徴とする請求項3記載の光ファイバコネクタ。 - (6)ブロックと溝の傾斜部分は、主表面の異方性エッ
チングにより、同時に形成されることを特徴とする請求
項4記載の光ファイバコネクタ。 - (7)スプラインは傾斜部分に、ブロックの主表面に平
行なバネ力により、接触されられることを特徴とする請
求項4記載の光ファイバコネクタ。 - (8)光ファイバ収納用にブロックの主表面に第1の溝
(14)を形成する工程、 前記主表面に一対の溝(21、22)を形成する工程、
前記一対の溝は、前記第1の溝の両側に、第1の溝より
も深く、それとほぼ同時に形成され、前記一対の溝の底
部をとおって、第1の溝にほぼ平行に、ブロックを切断
する工程と、 これにより、第1の溝を含むブロックの主表面から伸び
る傾斜部分を含む端面を形成し、からなることを特徴と
する光ファイバコネクタの製造方法。 - (9)ブロックはシリコンからなり、主表面は(100
)結晶面で、溝の側壁は(111)結晶面に形成される
ことを特徴とする請求項8記載の方法。 - (10)最初に、一対の溝は所定の深度までエッチング
され、次に、この一対の溝と第1の溝は同時にエッチン
グされることを特徴とする請求項8記載の方法。
