近接観察を良好に行うためには、観察光学系から最も近い位置(距離)に配置した第1照明光学系12と、他の第2照明光学系13、第3照明光学系14の距離と光量とのバランスが特に重要となる。特に、近接観察においては、注視したい被写体を画面中央に持ってくることが多いため、画面の中央部の明るさを上げることが重要となる。しかしながら、距離と光量とのバランスが悪い場合、ある一方向のみが明るくなってしまう。このため、その方向のみが明るくなってしまい、結果として画面の中央部が明るくならない。従って、条件式(3)、(4)を満たすことが望ましい。

また、第3実施形態に係る内視鏡は、以下の条件式(5)を満足することが望ましい。

特に、近接観察時の配光特性を良くするには、照明光学系だけでなく、観察光学系11の影響も無視できない。近接観察時は、観察光学系11と被写体との距離が近い。このため、複数の照明光学系の光が十分に広がり、均一になる前に被写体に照射される。そのような状況下で、かつ、観察光学系11の画角が広いと、照明光学系が配置されている方の画面周辺部が、特に明るくなってしまう。結果として、画面中央部の明るさが暗くなってしまい、観察性能が悪化してしまう。このため、条件式(5)を満たすことが望ましい。
また、第4実施形態に係る内視鏡は、以下の条件式(6)、(7)を満足することが望ましい。

- 被写体に近づいて近接観察可能な、拡大観察機能を有する観察光学系と、少なくとも3つ以上の、第1照明光学系と、第2照明光学系と、第3照明光学系と、を有する内視鏡であって、
少なくとも3つ以上の、前記第1照明光学系、前記第2照明光学系、前記第3照明光学系のうち、前記観察光学系からの距離が最も近い前記第1照明光学系の光量は、前記第2照明光学系、前記第3照明光学系の光量に対して2分の1以下であり、以下の条件式(1’)、(2’)、(3)、(4)、(6)、(7)を満足することを特徴とする内視鏡。
