Description
本出願は、2004年12月15日出願の米国特許出願番号11/013,671、発明の名称“Method and Apparatus for Wideband Distribution of Content”に対して優先権を主張するものであり、その全体を参照によりここに援用する。
1.発明の分野
本発明は、一般的に、デジタルコンテンツ配信の分野に関するものである。一つの事例的な側面として、本発明は、標準品位(SD)及び高品位(HD)テレビ番組などの一つあるいはそれ以上の数のサービスレベルを含む、広帯域トランスポートストリームの生成、伝送、受信およびデコードを行う方法および装置に関するものである。
従来のケーブルテレビネットワークでは、加入者宅内への伝送のための利用可能なスペクトル(“ダウンストリーム・スペクトル”)は、所定の周波数帯域(例えば、米国では6MHz)を有し、54MHzから860MHzなどの下限周波数と上限周波数との間のスペクトルスロットを占有するRFチャネルに分割されている。6MHzの帯域幅を持つチャネルは、例えば、シングルチャネルのアナログテレビ番組又は、(ブロードキャストあるいはオンデマンド形式の)多重番組のデジタルテレビストリーム、あるいは、DOCSISのダウンストリームトランスポートストリームを、加入者宅内に搬送するために用いられる。
最近は、高品位テレビ(HDTV)が、テレビ番組を伝送し視聴するための、益々一般的な方式となってきている。より多くの家庭とその他の施設が、高品位テレビ(HDTV)を購入し始めている。この傾向に対応するため、ケーブルテレビ事業者は、ケーブルテレビ加入者に対して、高品位テレビ番組の提供を開始しており、また、最近は、高品位テレビ番組の“オンデマンド(OD)”サービスの提供も開始している。
統計的多重化は、複数の番組を、単一のトランスポートストリームに効率的に収容するために用いられる技術である。この技術は、通常、ビデオコンテンツの圧縮容易性にもとづいて、一つの番組を伝送するために必要な瞬間的な帯域幅に関して、時間軸上で揺らぎを与えるという原理にもとづいている。これにより、複数の番組に必要となる帯域幅のピーク値に対する要求値をずらすことにより、効率的な帯域幅で多重番組の伝送を多重化することが可能となる。従来の統計的多重化の方法では、多重化する番組数(すなわち、“プール容量”)が多くなればなるほど、帯域を効率的に用いる機会がより増えるということが知られている。
本発明は、様々な実施例において、コンテンツの広帯域伝送のための方法および装置を提供することにより、以上で説明した課題に対する解決策を与えるものである。
図を参照して以下説明するが、図では同一の部分には同一の符号を用いている。
ここで使用されているように、用語“オンデマンド”あるいは“OD”は、任意の解像度でのオーディオおよび/あるいはビデオ番組あるいはデータなどのコンテンツのリアルタイム配信、擬似リアルタイム配信(例えば、“トリック”モードでの配信)、もしくは非リアルタイム配信を、ユーザ、顧客もしくはその代理者によるなんらかの行為に基づいて可能とする任意のサービスを含むものを指している。この種のコンテンツは、例えば、サーバや他の装置に格納あるいは一時的に保存されるか、コンテンツ源から直接ストリーム配信される。
本発明は、番組と番組情報テーブルの効率的で柔軟性に富んだ多重化を可能とする、広帯域多重を生成、伝送および受信する装置および方法を開示するものである。また、この装置と方法は、レガシーな加入者宅内機器(CPE)に対して後方互換性を与えることができるという利点があり、レガシーCPEが“レガシー”コンテンツを受信しデコードできるようにし、同時に、同一ネットワーク内の本発明による広帯域CPEが、レガシーコンテンツと、広帯域搬送波を介して配信されるコンテンツ(例えば、HD番組)の両者を受信しデコードできるようになっている。
本発明の装置および方法の実施例を以下詳細に説明する。これらの実施例は、前述した、複数システム事業者(MSO)と、デジタルネットワーク機能と、複数のクライアント装置/CPEを有する光同軸ハイブリッド方式(HFC)ケーブル構成に関するものであるが、本発明の一般的な原理および利点は、より広帯域な番組あるいはコンテンツの効率的な割当が必要となるような他の種類のネットワークと構成に拡張することが可能である。従って、以下の説明は、単に例証であるにすぎない。
広帯域トランスポートストリームは、図1に示した種類の従来のストリーム多重化とは異なり、一般的に、多入力多出力の多重化が必要となる。図3は、この機能を実現するマルチプレクサ232の機能ブロック図の一例を示すものである。本図は、複数のコンテンツ番組あるいはストリーム300を、量子化ユニット302に入力する構成を示している。以下の説明では、入力番組あるいはストリーム300を、“N”で表す。入力多重300を含むN個の番組は、例えば、一つあるいはそれ以上の数の物理的入力から与えられる。従って、図示した構成は、論理的な関係を表したものである。量子化ユニット302には、多重化段306によってフィードバック310が与えられているが、このフィードバックには、出力される各トランスポート多重で利用可能な瞬間の帯域幅に関する情報が含まれている。なお、図3に示した実施例では、量子化ユニット302と多重化/暗号化機能306を分離した構成とその論理的な配置は、単なる例証である。これらの2つの機能は、単一の機能として組み合わせたり、および/あるいは、同一のハードウェアへの統合することも可能であり、さらに、異なる論理段に振り分けることも可能である。
N:M広帯域マルチプレクサ306を実装するルールに応じて、M個の各々の出力を、個別に、様々なブロードキャストおよびケーブルテレビ伝送規格に適合させたり、非適合とさせることができる。一実施例において、MEM212でのパケットID(PID)再マッピングとテーブル生成の処理段によって、システム運用者が、番組固有の情報(PSI)テーブル(例えば、PATおよびPMT)、システム情報(SI)テーブルおよび、PID再マッピングなどの他の特徴の生成を制御し、どのテーブルをどのQAM搬送波上で送信するかなどを決定することにより、規格適合のレベルを設定することを可能としている。本発明の一実施例では、PID再マッピング/テーブル生成機能は、図3の量子化ユニット302内の(すなわち、多重化処理の前の)ソフトウェア処理によって実装されていて、これにより、PSIと他の任意のSIテーブルを、一度だけ作成すればよいものとなる。単一のSIあるいはPSIテーブルに属するパケットは、量子化ユニット302の出力に様々な入力に現れる。
図4および図4Aは、本発明による、改良された広帯域CPE206の第一の実施例を示したものである。図4の簡略化されたブロック図に示すように装置206は、一般的に、OpenCable規格準拠の組込みシステムを含んでおり、このシステムは、図2のHFCネットワーク201とのインターフェースとしのRFフロントエンド402(以下の説明にて図4Aで示す、同調器、復調器/暗号解読器およびデマルチプレクサを含む)と、デジタルプロセッサ404と、格納装置406と、テレビや個人電子装置やコンピュータやWiFiあるいは他のネットワークハブ/ルータなどの他のエンドユーザ装置とのインターフェースとなる複数のインターフェース408(例えば、ビデオ/オーディオインターフェース、IEEE−1394“Firewire”、USB、シリアル/パラレルポートなど)を有している。装置の中には(図4では簡単化のために不図示としてあるが)他にもコンポーネントが用いられており、それらは、処理レイヤ(DOCSIS MAC、DAVIC OOBチャンネル、MPEGなど)とメディアプロセッサや他の特定のSoCやASIC装置などである。これらの付加的なコンポーネントと機能については、同様に、ケーブル及び組込みシステムの分野では、当業者にとっては従来技術の中で公知となっており、ここでは詳細に説明しない。
同一の番組あるいは同一のコンテンツストリームに属するパケットは、多様な物理的な搬送波(すなわち、ATM VPI/VCIに類似の複数の物理的チャンネルを介して確立された論理的チャンネル)を経由してCPE206に到達することができ、その結果、これらのパケットは、CPEでは、順序が入れ替わったり、順序が入り乱れた状態で受信されることとなる。本発明の一実施例では、CPE206に、パケットの再順序付け機能を設けている。この再順序付け機能の一つの変形としては、連続性カウンタ(CC)フィールドを、パケットのMPEGヘッダ部のビットのヘッダに設けるものがある。この方法の利点は、既存のプロトコル構成をそのまま利用し、パケットオーバーヘッドや他の機構を付加しなくて済むという点にある。しかし、本発明のパケット再順序付け処理は、MPEGのCCフィールド構成に、本質的に依存したものではない。すなわち、他にも多くのトランスポートプロトコルによって、ヘッダフィールドにパケットカウンタを設けて、このようなパケット再順序付けを行なうことが可能となる。さらに、以下に説明するジッタ補償(例えば、ジッタバッファ)や、特に、遅く到着したパケットの潜伏時間を上限を設定する同様の方法の利用など、パケット管理のための他の機構を、再順序付けと併せて用いることが可能である。
ある種のアプリケーションでは、ケーブルシステム事業者は、いわゆる“ギガビット・イーサネット(登録商標)”(GBE)あるいは同様のデータインフラとプロトコルを用いて、基幹ネットワーク(すなわち、中継局とネットワークハブとの間)でオーディオ/ビデオコンテンツを伝送している。従って、デジタルテレビ信号がQAMチャンネルに変調される地点には、ハブが用いられる。この機能を担う構成装置は、一般的に“エッジQAM”装置と呼ばれるものである。エッジQAM装置では、所定のコンテンツ番組に属するパケットは、入力(例えば、ギガビット・イーサネット(登録商標))インターフェースから選択され、所望の出力ポートに伝送される。
本発明の広帯域装置および方法は、HD解像度の増加や、擬似VOD(NVOD)を含む他の利点をもたらす用途にも用いることが可能である。特に、一実施例として、所定の高品位ビデオ(例えば、HD)番組のタイムシフトコピーを、広帯域多重で伝送するような、番組の“時差配信”がある。時差配信とは、同一の番組の同一の複写物に対して、それらの開始時間に時差を設けて、互いに多重化し、トランスポートストリームを作る処理である。視聴者が、トランスポートストリームに同調させると、次の時差で送られた番組の複写物の受信が開始されると同時に、視聴者は、番組の開始から視聴を始めることができる。これにより、長い時間を待たされることなく(例えば、次に予定されている、映画の一巻の2時間枠などの繰り返しを待つことなく)、VODに類似した機能性が得られる。例えば、120分物の映画の24本の複写物の場合、各複写物に概ね1.2Mbpsの帯域幅を割当てると、ケーブルネットワークの一つのQAMチャンネルで5分づつずらして開始させることができる。視聴者がこの多重状態に同調させると、視聴者は、番組の複写物の開始から5分以上経過しない状態で、視聴を始めることができる。
本発明の他の特徴として、前述した“広帯域”中継局、エッジおよびCPE機能を用いることにより、様々なビジネス形態を実現することが可能となる。すでに説明したように、ユーザに対して、新たなCPEへの更新を強制したり、サービスが受けられない状況におかれることを強いることがないように管理する方法で、特定のサービス地域あるいは利用者の部分集合を、新たな(広帯域)CPEに移行させることが可能である。
Claims (11)
- コンテンツ配信ネットワークで有用となる統計的多重化装置であって、
複数のN個の入力待ち行列の中から、複数の異なる番組に対応したコンテンツデータパケットを選択的に取り出す第一の処理と、
前記取り出されたコンテンツデータパケットを、M個のRFチャンネルに選択的に割り当てる第二の処理と、を含み、
前記複数の異なる番組の少なくとも一つの第一の部分集合に対応するパケットは、前記M個のRFチャンネルの複数のものを介して統計的に多重化されることであり、前記複数の異なる番組の少なくとも一つの第二の部分集合に対応するパケットが前記M個のRFチャンネルのうちの一つのみについて統計的に多重化されることである、ことを特徴とする統計的多重化装置。 - 前記複数の異なる番組の前記第一の部分集合は、一つ以上の加入者の広帯域装置への供給のための番組であり、また前記異なる番組の前記第二の部分集合は、加入者のレガシーな装置への供給のための番組であること、を特徴とする請求項1に記載の装置。
- 前記複数の異なる番組は、HDメディア番組であること、を特徴とする請求項1に記載の装置。
- 前記複数のRFチャンネルのM個において前記取り出されたデータパケットを、伝送するための伝送装置を更に有すること、を特徴とする請求項1に記載の装置。
