Description
本願は、発明の名称が「整形外科用ベアリングおよびその製造方法(Orthopaedic Bearing and Method of Making the Same)」である米国の同時継続出願第XX/XXX,XXX号(代理人事件番号265280−76607、DEP−5269DIV1)、および、発明の名称が「整形外科用ベアリングおよびその製造方法(Orthopaedic Bearing and Method of Making the Same)」である第XX/XXX,XXX号(代理人事件番号265280−76608、DEP−5269DIV2)である米国の同時継続出願と相互に参照される。上記出願は、いずれも、本願と同一の譲受人に譲渡され、本願と同時に出願されており、参照により本明細書に組み込まれる。
本願の開示内容は、概して、インプラント可能な整形外科用ベアリング(orthopaedic bearing)およびその製造方法に関するものである。
関節窩ベアリングのような、インプラント可能な整形外科用ベアリングは、通常、ポリエチレンから作られている。このようなベアリングの製作に一般的に用いられているポリエチレンの一種は、超高分子量ポリエチレン(UHMWPE)である。このUHMWPEにおける特定の特性は、ガンマ線のような放射線を照射することで向上することがある。特に、UHMWPEに所定量の放射線を照射すると、UHMWPEが架橋し、これによりUHMWPEの耐摩耗性が向上する。UHMWPEを架橋させたり、焼き入れしたり、あるいは他の方法で処理する技法は、発行済みの数々の米国特許に記載されている。このような特許の例としては、サンら(Sun et al.)に付与された米国特許第5,728,748号(およびその対応特許(counterparts))、メリルら(Merrill et al.)に付与された米国特許第5,879,400号、サウムら(Saum et al.)に付与された米国特許第6,017,975号、サウムら(Saum et al.)に付与された米国特許第6,242,507号、サウムら(Saum et al.)に付与された米国特許第6,316,158号、シェンら(Shen et al.)に付与された米国特許第6,228,900号、マクナルティら(McNulty et al.)に付与された米国特許第6,245,276号、およびサロヴェイら(Salovey et al.)に付与された米国特許第6,281,264号がある。これら各米国特許の開示内容は、参照により本明細書に組み込む。
開示内容の一態様によれば、整形外科用ベアリングが金属部品を有し、この金属部品には、高分子複合材料が固定されている。この高分子複合材料は、架橋させていないポリマー層と、架橋させたポリマー層とを有することがある。架橋させていないポリマー層は、金属部品と、架橋させたポリマー層との間に配置することがある。
本願の開示は、インプラント可能な整形外科用ベアリングおよびその製造方法に関するものである。このようなベアリングは、数多くの関節置換術または修復手術、例えば、肩関節、股関節、膝関節、足関節、指節関節、その他のあらゆる関節に関連した外科手術などに利用されうる。このことから、以下の記載では、典型的な1つの種類のベアリング(つまり、関節窩ベアリング)を説明するが、当然のことながら、本発明は関節窩ベアリングに限定されず、あらゆる種類の整形外科用ベアリングの構造に応用できる可能性がある。
(1) インプラント可能な整形外科用ベアリングであって、
金属部品と、
前記金属部品に固定した、架橋させていないポリマー層と、
前記架橋させていないポリマー層に固定した架橋させたポリマー層と、を備えたベアリング。
(2) 実施態様1記載のベアリングであって、
前記架橋させたポリマー層が、前記架橋させていないポリマー層に成型されている、ベアリング。
(3) 実施態様2記載のベアリングであって、
前記架橋させたポリマー層には、ガンマ線を照射して架橋させたポリマー層が含まれる、ベアリング。
前記架橋させたポリマー層には、ガンマ線を照射して架橋させたポリマー層が含まれる、ベアリング。
(5) 実施態様1記載のベアリングであって、
前記架橋させていないポリマー層が前記金属部品に成型されている、ベアリング。
(6) 実施態様5記載のベアリングであって、
前記架橋させたポリマー層が前記架橋させていないポリマー層に成型されている、ベアリング。
(7) 実施態様1記載のベアリングであって、
前記金属部品は、多孔性コーティングを施した中実金属体を備えている、ベアリング。
前記中実金属体は、前記多孔性コーティングが施された外面を画定しており、
前記架橋させていないポリマー層が前記外面に成型されている、ベアリング。
(9) 実施態様1記載のベアリングであって、
前記金属部品が多孔性金属体を備えている、ベアリング。
(10) 実施態様9記載のベアリングであって、
前記架橋させていないポリマー層が前記多孔性金属体に成型されている、ベアリング。
(11) 実施態様1記載のベアリングであって、
前記架橋させたポリマー層および前記架橋させていないポリマー層が互いに圧縮成型されている、ベアリング。
前記架橋させたポリマー層および前記架橋させていないポリマー層が前記金属部品に圧縮成型されている、ベアリング。
(13) 実施態様1記載のベアリングであって、
前記架橋させたポリマー層と、前記架橋させていないポリマー層の両方がポリエチレンを含んでいる、ベアリング。
(14) 実施態様1記載のベアリングであって、
前記架橋させたポリマー層と、前記架橋させていないポリマー層の両方が超高分子量ポリエチレンを含んでいる、ベアリング。
金属部品と、
前記金属部品に固定された第1のポリマー層であって、第1の程度まで架橋させた第1のポリマー層と、
前記第1のポリマー層に固定された第2のポリマー層であって、前記第1の程度とは異なる第2の程度まで架橋させた第2のポリマー層と、を備えるベアリング。
(16) 実施態様15記載のベアリングであって、
前記第2の程度が前記第1の程度より大きい、ベアリング。
(17) 実施態様16記載のベアリングであって、
前記第2のポリマー層には、関節面が画定されている、ベアリング。
前記第1のポリマー層が前記第2のポリマー層に成型されている、ベアリング。
(19) 実施態様18記載のベアリングであって、
前記第2のポリマー層がガンマ線を照射して架橋させたポリマー層を含んでいる、ベアリング。
(20) 実施態様15記載のベアリングであって、

Claims (10)
- インプラント可能な一体型ベアリングの製造方法であって、
多孔性表面を有する金属製またはセラミック製コンポーネントと、架橋ポリマーを含むプレフォームとの間に、非架橋ポリマーのプレフォームを前記多孔性表面に面するように提供することにより、アセンブリを形成することと、
前記アセンブリに熱および圧力を加えて、前記非架橋ポリマーを前記金属製またはセラミック製コンポーネントの前記多孔性表面に対してかみ合うように成型し、前記非架橋ポリマーが前記架橋ポリマーの前記プレフォームに結合されるようにすることと、
を含む、方法。 - 請求項1に記載の方法において、
前記非架橋ポリマーおよび前記架橋ポリマーは、超高分子量ポリエチレンである、方法。 - 請求項1または2に記載の方法において、
前記ポリマーをガンマ線に曝すことにより架橋すること、
をさらに含む、方法。 - 請求項1〜3のいずれかに記載の方法において、
前記コンポーネントは、多孔性コーティングが上に配置された中実金属体を含んでいる、方法。 - 請求項1〜4のいずれかに記載の方法において、
前記架橋ポリマーの層に関節面を形成すること、
をさらに含む、方法。 - インプラント可能な一体型ベアリングの製造方法であって、
多孔性表面を有する金属製またはセラミック製コンポーネントと、第1のポリマーを含むプレフォームとの間に、第2のポリマーのプレフォームを前記多孔性表面に面するように提供することにより、アセンブリを形成することと、
前記アセンブリに熱および圧力を加えて、前記第2のポリマーを前記金属製またはセラミック製コンポーネントの前記多孔性表面に対してかみ合うように成型し、前記第2のポリマーが前記第1のポリマーの前記プレフォームに結合されるようにすることと、
を含み、
前記第1のポリマーが第1の程度まで架橋されたポリマーであり、前記第2のポリマーが前記第1の程度よりも低い第2の程度まで架橋されたポリマーである、方法。 - 請求項6に記載の方法において、
前記第1および第2のポリマーは、超高分子量ポリエチレンである、方法。 - 請求項6または7に記載の方法において、
前記ポリマーをガンマ線に曝すことにより架橋すること、
をさらに含む、方法。 - 請求項6〜8のいずれかに記載の方法において、
前記コンポーネントは、多孔性コーティングが上に配置された中実金属体を含んでいる、方法。 - 請求項6〜9のいずれかに記載の方法において、
