Description
液晶表示パネルにおいて明るい(明度が高い)表示を得るためには、経験的に白色表示時の透過率を30%近くにする必要がある。ここで本明細書における表示パネルの透過率は、特に断りのない限り、カラーフィルターの透過率、表示パネルの開口率(表示パネル内における遮光部分を除いた領域(光が透過可能な領域)の面積比)および透明電極基板(ガラス基板)など他の構成部材による光の吸収率等を考慮せず、液晶層および偏光板(位相補償フィルムを有している場合はそれも含む)のみの光の利用効率を指すものとする。
液晶表示パネルにおいて印加電圧に依存するパラメータとして、液晶分子の傾き角がある。電圧無印加時に透明電極基板面に対してほぼ平行に液晶分子が配向する液晶パネルにおいては、印加電圧を大きくするに従って、透明電極基板に対する液晶分子の傾き角は大きくなる(図6参照)。以下、表示パネルの厚さ方向(液晶層の厚さ方向)に平均した液晶分子の透明電極基板に対する傾き角を「平均傾き角」と称する。
液晶表示パネルにおける透過光の色度は、その液晶層のリタデーションにも依存する。先に述べたように、リタデーションが過剰である場合は、透過光が白色が黄色味を帯びる傾向にある。なお本明細書において、表示パネルの透過光の色度は、カラーフィルターやガラス基板など他の構成部材の透過スペクトルを考慮せず、液晶層および偏光板(位相補償フィルムを有している場合はそれも含む)のみを透過した光の色度を指すものとする。
Claims (1)
- 一対の透明電極基板と、
前記透明電極基板間に挟持された液晶材料である液晶層と、
前記透明電極基板に面して配設され、偏光板および位相補償フィルムのうち少なくとも偏光板を有する偏光手段とを有する表示パネルを備え、
前記透明電極基板間に駆動電圧を印加して前記液晶層のリタデーションを変化させることにより前記表示パネルに映像を表示させるノーマリホワイト型の液晶表示装置であって、
前記透明電極基板間に電圧を印加しない状態における、波長550nmの透過光に対する前記液晶層のリタデーションは280〜380nm、且つ前記液晶層および偏光手段の透過率は31%以上であり、
映像表示のための前記駆動電圧として、前記液晶層のリタデーションが270nm以下、且つ前記透過率が30%以下となる領域の電圧のみを用いる
ことを特徴とする液晶表示装置。
