Abstract
PURPOSE:To easily form phase gratings having a fine pitch structure by setting respective elements in such a manner as to generate an electric field in non- electrode regions except between electrodes facing each other so that a phase change is generated in the non-electrode regions at the time of impressing the electric field on a liquid crystal and forming the phase gratings by rotating liquid crystal molecules. CONSTITUTION:The electrodes 51, 52 consist of the width sufficiently smaller than the grating-like arrangement period 1 thereof. The electric field is formed in the electrode regions 61, 62 which are the regions formed of the electrode 4 facing the electrodes 51, 52 of the 2nd electrode 5 if a rectangular voltage of, for example, 1kHz is impressed between the 1st electrode 4 and the 2nd electrode 5 at 10V in its P-P value. Effusion of the electric field is generated in the non-electrode regions 71, 72 except the regions formed of the electrode 4 facing the electrodes 51, 52 simultaneously therewith. A change in refractive index is thus generated in the non-electrode regions 71, 72 as well besides in the electrode regions 61, 62. The fine phase gratings are thereby formed.
