Abstract

PURPOSE:To mass-produce polarizers of simple structure by providing electrodes for applying high-frequency electric field, onto a substrate having the electrooptical effect, and by providing a pass slit for at least either diffracted light with different plances of polarization emitted from the substrate surface. CONSTITUTION:For example, Al cross finger electrodes 2 of 5mum electrode width W and 6mum electrode interval (t) are formed in the direction of the X axis on LiNbO3 plate 1 of unidirectional electrooptical crystal. Electrodes 2 are applied with a voltage from high-frequency oscillation part 3. As laser light 4 with plate 7 of circular polarization is incident 1 from flank 10 of substrate 1, diffracted light 6 with a plane of polarization parallel to the X axis and diffracted light 9 with a plane of polarization perpendicular to the X axis are emitted from the surface of substarate 1 and separated via slits 13. This polarizer has extremely simple structure and is suitable to mass-production.
