Abstract
PURPOSE:To provide a higher operating speed, lower impressed voltage and wider optical path change angle by laminating plural transparent electrodes and nonlinear optical materials and impressing the voltages of different potentials alternately to these plural transparent electrodes. CONSTITUTION:The nonlinear optical materials 2 and the light transmittable electrodes 1 are alternately laminated. The lamination is executed by alternate deposition of the nonlinear optical materials 2 and the light transmittable electrodes 1 by a vapor deposition, solvent evaporation method or the like on a substrate consisting of prescribed quartz, etc. Two sets of the electrode groups 11 and 12 are alternately laminated via the nonlinear optical materials 2. Further the voltage of a high potential can be impressed to the one electrode group 11 and the voltage of a low potential can be impressed to the other electrode group 12. Namely, the electric fields of respective reverse direction are impressed to the nonlinear optical materials 2 between two sets of the adjacent electrodes of the light transmittable electrodes 1. The electro-optic element which is high in the operating speed, is low in the impressed voltage and is large in the optical path change angle is thereby obtd.
