Abstract

PURPOSE: To enable the impression of a driving voltage from one transparent substrate side by providing voltage impressing terminals only to one of the transparent conductive layers on the surfaces of a pair of transparent substrates and electrically insulating the one transparent conductive layer thereof, thereby forming two regions where a prescribed potential difference is imparted.
CONSTITUTION: A voltage is impressed via the voltage impressing terminals 210, 220 on one 2b of the opposed transparent conductive layers 2a, 2b of a liquid crystal display element and the voltage is not impressed from the outside on the other one 2a. The one 2b on the side where the voltage is impressed has the two regions 21, 22 where the prescribed voltage is impressed. The electric charge of the polarity reverse from the polarity of the charge generated in the two regions 21, 22 by the impression of the voltage on said regions is induced by electrostatic induction in the transparent conductive layer 2a of another side opposite respectively to the above-mentioned two regions. The voltage is impressed on the liquid crystal material between the transparent conductive layers facing each other by such electrostatic induction. The impression of the voltage only from one side of the transparent electrodes is thereby enabled without requiring a voltage impressing part such as transfer.
