Description
本発明は、全体として、通信網に関するものである。より詳細には、本発明は、移動通信網においてシームレスな移動を可能にするメカニズムに関する。
モバイル機器のための通信網としては、セルラー通信システム、モバイル・インターネット・プロトコル(IP)ネットワーク、ページング・システムなどが挙げられる。セルラー通信システムでは、一般に、送信塔とその送信塔に関係する基地局の間で局所的通信リンクを“ハンドオフ”することにより、モバイル端末が場所を移動できるようになっている。同様に、IP対応の装置(例えばワイヤレスのパーソナル・ディジタル・アシスタント(PDA)やモバイル・コンピュータ)は、モバイルIPネットワークにより、インターネットへの接続を維持したまま、地理的に分散したエリアを動き回ることが可能になっている。

本発明により、モバイル・ネットワーク(例えばモバイルIPネットワーク)においてシームレスなハンドオーバーを容易にするシステムと方法が提供される。本発明の第1の特徴によれば、アクセス・ルータが、このアクセス・ルータのサービス・エリアに入ってくるモバイル端末からの情報を受信することにより、地理的に隣接している他のアクセス・ルータについてダイナミックに学習することが可能になる。本発明の第2の特徴によれば、集中型スキームを必要とすることなく(例えばピアツーピア法を利用して)複数のアクセス・ルータがケイパビリティ情報を共有することができる。本発明の第3の特徴によれば、1つ以上のターゲット・アクセス・ルータに関するケイパビリティ情報と、モバイル・ノードの運動方向とに基づき、ターゲット・アクセス・ルータを選択することと、ハンドオフを決めることができる。
発明の詳細な説明
図3は、本発明のさまざまな原理を利用したシステムを示している。図3からわかるように、第1のアクセス・ルータAR1が、モバイル端末MTが存在している可能性のある第1のサービス・エリア(図示せず)にサービスを提供する。図3には明記していないが、1つ以上の基地局が存在していて対応する地理的エリアをカバーしており、そのような基地局を通じて各アクセス・ルータがデータ・パケットを送受信することが仮定されている。また、各アクセス・ルータがインターネット対応(例えばIPプロトコル対応)の接続を提供し、各アクセス・ルータが受信したデータ・パケットを対応するサービス・エリア内の1つ以上のモバイル端末に転送できることも仮定されている。各アクセス・ルータは、そのアクセス・ルータと直接通信するのに用いられるIPアドレスと、アクセス・ルータが割り当てることのできるIPアドレス・ブロックとを備えている。このIPアドレス・ブロックは、各アクセス・ルータが、そのアクセス・ルータのサービスを受けるモバイル端末と通信するために利用する。わかりやすくするため、アクセス・ルータAR1が10.1.0.0というIPアドレスを持ち、アクセス・ルータAR2が10.2.0.0というIPアドレスを持つことが図示されている。
Claims (3)
- 複数のアクセス・ルータを含むモバイルIPネットワーク内でハンドオフの決定に関与するモバイル端末であって、
モバイルIPネットワーク内でディジタル・データの送信と受信が可能な送信/受信回路と;
この送信/受信回路に接続されたモバイルIPハンドオフ処理回路とを備え、モバイルIPハンドオフ処理回路が、モバイルIPネットワーク内の第1のアクセス・ルータのネットワーク・アドレスを、このモバイルIPネットワーク内の第2のアクセス・ルータに送信し、
地理的に近いアクセス・ルータ群のケイパビリティを明らかにするケイパビリティ地図をさらに備え、上記モバイルIPハンドオフ処理回路が、このケイパビリティ地図に記憶された1つ以上のケイパビリティをモバイルIPネットワーク内の1つのアクセス・ルータに送信する、モバイル端末。 - 上記モバイルIPハンドオフ処理回路が、モバイル端末上で現在実行されているアプリケーションに依存した帯域幅条件を送信する、請求項1に記載のモバイル端末。
- 上記送信/受信回路と上記モバイルIPハンドオフ処理回路に接続された信号強度検出器をさらに備え、モバイルIPハンドオフ処理回路が、信号強度が閾値よりも小さくなったことを検出したことに応答して、モバイルIPネットワーク内でハンドオフ操作を開始する、請求項1に記載のモバイル端末。
