JULIUS HENRIK HOYER, OF AALBORG, DENMARK.
FASTENING FOR DOORS OR SUCH LIKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of LettersPatent No. 698,282, dated April 22, 1902.
Application filed J'uly 2"],1i901.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIUS HENRIK HoYER, a subject of the King of Denmark, residing at Aalborg, in the Kingdom of Denmark, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastenings for Doors or Such Like, of which the following is a specification.
' My present invention relates to a fastening. for doors and the like; and it consists of the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described.
The object of the inventionis to provide a fastening by means of which a door or the like may be secured either in a closed position or partially opened. v v
In the accompanying drawings, illustratin g my invention, Figure 1 represents the fastening in front elevation, shown in the closed po-, sition. Fig. 2is a top view showing the latchlever in section on the line a; of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is afront elevation of the fastening in an open position. Fig. 5 is a top view of the fastening in the position shown in'Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a similar View showing latch-lever in the position it occupies when the door is partially open, and the fastening accordingly serves the purpose of a safety-chain. Fig. 7 represents a'detail.
The fastening consists of -a base-platefa, on which are provided the guidesb, in which slides a bolt 0, acted on by the spring At the outer or fastening end this bolt is given- -a hook shape, as shown at f. Below the bolt =0 is provided a stop-plate g, which forms with the hooked end of the bolt 0 an eye it. This eye '7 serves to hold a latch-lever 01 in the closed position of the bolt 0. This lever 45 is in the present construction shown divided at 7c and is provided at its free end with a projecting piece Z. The latch-lever is held in a vertical position, as'shown in Fig. 3, by a spring-catch n, which is released by means of the button 0. The catch n and the lever 73 are mounted on the sideframes of the door, while the plate a is'secured to the door itself. On sliding the bolt c so as. to close the door the hook-shaped'end f will form, as above mentioned, an eye it with the end of the stopplate g, and through the eye thus formed passes the latch-lever c. In this position of the fastening the door is locked. If new the bolt 0 is pulled back, it will take the position Serial No. 70,603. (No moans shown in Fig. 4:, the tension of the springd being overcome. The door is then unlocked and can be opened. By providing a catch, such as g, which turns about the pin p the bolt can be kept in its unlocked position, so that the door can be continuously opened and closed. It now the bolt 0 is moved into'the position of locking,,Fig. 1, and it is desired to secure the door in the manner of a safetychain, it is only necessary to release the catch h, which is done, as above mentioned, by
means of the button 0 by turning the catch on itspivot against the tension of the spring m, whereupon the lover I can be turnedabout its pivot 7c into a horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 6. r In this position of the parts the projecting piecel presses against the sides of the eye It on opening the door, and thus limits the extent to which the door can be opened. Because, as just mentioned, the lever 1 is in a horizontal position in this case and the hook on the end of the bolt 0 is directed downward it isevident that the fastening cannot be released, owing to the hook f being prevented from moving back by the le- Ver i. In order to release the fastening, it is necessary to move the lever 'i into its vertical -position,-Fig. 3, in which position it can be 'kept'by the catch 'n, Fig. 2.
iIt will be'evident from the above description that in consequence of the arrangement of the latch-lever v the'fastening can only be released from the interior of the room.
If it is desired to secure the bolt 0 in the locked position, the above-mentioned catch q may be prolonged and provided with a second projection '1", which can be moved behind a projecting part of the bolt 0, and thus prevent the same from being moved out, of its locked position without first raising the v dirt, and such like, openings .beingprovided for the passage ofthe projecting parts, such as the bolt 0, the stop-plate 9, and the operating-button on the catch q.
. What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is.;
1. In a fastening for doors and such like the combination of a latch-lever provided' with a projection at its free endand adapted Ico to be hinged to the side frame of the door, a catch adapted to hold the lever in a vertical position and to permit its release, a stop-plate secured to a plate adapted to be attached to the door or such like, a bolt adapted to slide in guides mounted on said plate and adapted on being moved into its closed position to form in combination with the end of said stop-plate an eye inclosing said latch-lever and a catch for holding the bolt in locked position, substantially as set forth.
2. In a fastening for doors and such like the combination of a latch-lever provided with projection at its free end and adapted to be hinged to the door-frame, a catch adapted to hold said lever in a vertical position and to permit its release, a stop-plate secured to a plate adapted to be attached to the door, a bolt adapted to slide in guides mounted on said plate and to form in combination with the end of said stop-plate an eye inclosing the said latch-lever, and a spring normally pressing said bolt into its locked position, substantially as set forth.
3. In a fastening for doors and such like the combination of a latch-lever, provided with projection at its free end and adapted to be hinged to the door-frame, a catch adapted to hold said lever in a vertical position and to permit its release, a stop-plate secured to a plate adapted to be attached to the door, a bolt adapted to slide in guides mounted on said plate and to form in combination with the end of said stop-plate an eye inclosing the said latch-lever, a spring normally pressing said bolt into its locked position, and a catch adapted to keep said bolt in either its looking or open position, substantially as set forth.
4. A fastening device, comprising a swinging latch-lever, a spring-pressed bolt having a lateral projection at its free end, a stopplate adapted to form with the bolt an eye to receive the latch-lever, and a locking device for said bolt, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two Witnesses.
JULIUS HENRIK IIOYER.
