WILLIAM FIELDS, OF TRENTON, NEW JERSEY.
LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 4, 1914.
Application filed. September 12, 1913. Serial No. 789,539.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, W'ILLIAM FInLns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Trenton, in the county of Mercer and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to door operating and locking mechanism and the essential feature of the device is to provide means whereby the door is locked from the inside and can be only opened upon manipulation of mechanism arranged upon the inside of the door.
A further object of the invention is the provision of novel locking and operating means for doors which is arranged on the inside thereof and away from the free edge of the door so as to prevent the insertion of tools for opening the same, thus making a perfectly burglar proof door.
Further objects of the invention will ap pear as the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this application, and in which Figure 1 is a front elevation showing the device applied to a cellar door with the door in fully open position. Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken approximately on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, showing the door closed and the latch in operative position. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 represents a suitable support which may either be a portion of the door frame 2 or a part of a horizontal wall, as will be readily understood. Secured to the support is a bearing member 3 having pivoted thereon a hinge arm 1 which is pivotally connected to the door 5 through an arm plate 6 secured to said door. The arm 4 has mounted thereon a suitable rib or keeper 7 which is engaged by the hooked end of the pivoted catch member 8 pivoted in the ears formed on the bearing member 3. This catch 8 normally has its hooked end thrown into engagement with the keeper 7 by means of a spring 10 and automatically assumes a looking position when the door is closed.
In order to open the door there is journaled in suitable bearings upon the support 1 a shaft 11 which may be operated either by a lever or by a weight 12 connected to a cable 13 which is in turn wound around the shaft 11. This cable is arranged to 1'0- tate the shaft in one direction and wound around the shaft are a pair of cables 14 which extend beneath the bearing member 3 and are connected to eyes 15 on the underside of the arm 41 so that immediately upon release of the catch 8 the arm 4: will be thrown outwardly or upwardly until the underside of the arm engages the support 1. The door may then be turned upon its pivotal connection with the arm to the position shown in Fig. 1. Upon closing the same against the tension exerted by the weight the hook member 8 will lock the arm 4 against movement and thereby prevent opening of the door. If desired, the catch may be held in operative position in any suitable manner so as to prevent the automatic looking of the door when closed. This may be accomplished by pivoting a link 16 to the bearing member which will engage over the end of the catch 8, as will be readily understood.
It will be noted that when the door is in closed position that it can not be turned upon its pivotal connection with the arm 4 owing to the fact that the inner edge of the door abuts against the jamb or frame and precludes any movement of the door until the catch is released. Where it is only desired to open the door a short distance, the arm may be made solid with the arm plate 6.
\Vhat is claimed is 1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a door frame and a door, of hinge members secured to the frame and the door, an intervening curved arm member connected to said hinge members and pivoted to one of them and means carried by one of the hinge members for locking the arm member against movement.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a door frame and a door, of hinge members secured to the frame and the door, an intervening curved arm member connected to said hinge members and pivoted to one of them, means carried by one of the hinge members for locking the arm member against movement, and means conneeted to the arm member and adapted to raise the hinge member on the door and the door when the locking means is released.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination with a support and a door, of hinge members secured to the support and the door, a curved arm mel nber pivoted to In testimony whereof I aflix my signature each of the hmge members and adapted to 1n px'esence of two wltnesses. turn the door over the support, means for locking the arm member against movement WILLIAM FIELDS 5 and means for pivoting the arm member Witnesses:
