Description
<液晶表示装置の構成>
最初に、液晶表示装置の構成について説明する。図1は、本発明に係る液晶表示装置の分解斜視図であり、図2は、図1におけるA−Aと表記した線に従った液晶表示装置の断面の断面図である。図1において、液晶表示装置21は、液晶パネル22に半導体チップとしての液晶駆動用IC23a及び23bを実装し、配線接続要素としてのFPC(Flexible Printed Circuit)24を液晶パネル22に接続し、さらに液晶パネル22の裏面側に照明装置26をバックライトとして設けることによって形成される。
次に、第2基板27bに形成されているカラーフィルタ38などのカラーフィルタの構成について説明する。図3(a)はカラーフィルタの一実施形態の平面構造を模式的に示している。また、図3(b)は、複数の第2基板が形成されたマザー基板の平面構造を模式的に示している。
次に、カラーフィルタ基板の製造工程について図7および図8を参照して説明する。図7はカラーフィルタ基板の製造工程を示すフローチャートであり、図8(a)〜(g)はカラーフィルタ基板の製造過程を示す模式断面図である。
次に、液晶表示装置の製造工程について説明する。図1及び図2を参照して説明した液晶表示装置21は、例えば、図9に示す製造工程を実行することによって製造される。図9は、液晶表示装置の製造工程を示すフローチャートである。図9に示した製造工程において、ステップS21からステップS26の一連の工程が第1基板27aを形成する工程であり、ステップS31からステップS34の一連の工程が第2基板27bを形成する工程である。第1基板形成工程と第2基板形成工程は、通常、それぞれが独自に行われる。
次に、突起82a及び突起82bによる液晶Lの配向方向規制について説明する。図11は、駆動電圧が印加されていない時の液晶の配向方向を示す液晶パネルの断面図である。上述したように、第1基板27aは、基材31a上に、第一電極34a、突起82a、配向膜36aが形成されている。なお、反射膜32及び絶縁膜33は、液晶の配向には影響しないため、図11では図示省略した。第2基板27bは、基材31b上に、隔壁56と色要素53が形成されており、隔壁56と色要素53との上に第二電極34b、突起82b、配向膜36bが形成されている。第1基板27aと第2基板27bとは、配向膜36aと配向膜36bとが隙間を隔てて対向するように貼り合わされており、配向膜36aと配向膜36bとの間の隙間に液晶Lが充填されている。
次に、突起82a及び突起82bのパネル面方向の形状について説明する。図12は、4色フィルタの1絵素における突起のパネル面方向の形状を示す平面図である。図12にB−Bで示した断面の断面形状は、上述した図11に示した断面図の形状と実質的に同等である。
次に、配向規制手段の他の形状の一例である溝状の配向規制手段について説明する。図16は、液晶層と接する面に凹部が形成された液晶パネルの、駆動電圧が印加されていない時の液晶の配向方向を示す断面図である。図16(a)は、第1基板と第2基板との液晶層と接する面に凹部が形成された液晶パネルの、駆動電圧が印加されていない時の液晶の配向方向を示す断面図であり、図16(b)は、第2基板の液晶層と接する面に突起が形成され、第1基板との液晶層と接する面に凹部が形成された液晶パネルの、駆動電圧が印加されていない時の液晶の配向方向を示す断面図である。
(1)図12又は図15に示した絵素において、絵素を構成するそれぞれの色の色要素53に対応する位置に形成された配向規制手段である突起82a、突起82b、凹部83a、凹部83b、又は凹部84aの延在する面積がそれぞれ異なる。即ち、絵素を構成する各色の画素における突起82a、突起82b、凹部83a、凹部83b、又は凹部84aの延在する面積を各色間でバランスがとれるような適切な面積に設定してある。このように、各色毎に配向規制手段の延在する面積を個別に設定することで、配向規制手段によって液晶の配向方向を規制して視野角を広げるとともに、広がった視野角の中で、適切な色バランスを実現することができる。
次に、本発明に係る電子機器について説明する。本実施形態の電子機器は、第一の実施形態で説明した液晶表示装置を備えた電子機器である。本実施形態の電子機器の具体例について説明する。
(1)大型液晶テレビ200は、配向規制手段によって液晶の配向方向を規制して視野角を広げるとともに、各色要素毎に配向規制手段である突起82a、突起82bの延在する面積を個別に設定することで、広がった視野角の中で、適切な色バランスを実現することができる液晶装置を備えることから、色バランスが良好で視野角が広い大型液晶テレビ200を実現することができる。
Claims (6)
- 複数の画素電極を有する電極基板と、前記電極基板に対向する対向基板と、前記複数の画素電極のそれぞれに対向する色要素を有するカラーフィルタと、前記電極基板と前記対向基板との間に挟持された液晶と、前記電極基板と前記対向基板の少なくとも一方の前記液晶面側に延在する配向規制手段とを備える液晶装置であって、
前記色要素は、少なくとも3色のいずれかの色であって、
前記各色要素に対応する位置に前記配向規制手段が形成され、
_前記配向規制手段は、所定の方向に延在し、かつ前記配向規制手段の形状は、前記各色要素毎に略同じであり、
_前記配向規制手段が延在方向上で複数に分離されるとともに、前記各色要素毎に前記配向規制手段の分離のされ方が異なることによって、前記配向規制手段の面積が前記各色要素毎に異なることを特徴とする液晶装置。 - 前記色要素は、赤色、緑色、青色、青緑色、紫赤色、黄色のいずれかであることを特徴とする、請求項1に記載の液晶装置。

- 前記配向規制手段は、前記液晶面側に形成された突起、又は凹部であることを特徴とする、請求項1乃至3のいずれか1項に記載の液晶装置。
- 前記各色要素毎に前記突起又は前記凹部のいずれか一方又は両方が形成されていることを特徴とする、請求項4に記載の液晶装置。
- 請求項1乃至5のいずれか1項に記載の液晶装置を備えることを特徴とする電子機器。
