Description
(液晶装置の構成)
まず、図1を参照して、本発明の第1実施形態に係る液晶装置の電極及び配線構成を中心とした平面構成について説明する。
次に、図2を参照して、第1実施形態に係る液晶装置100の平面的な画素構成について説明する。図2は、液晶装置100の画素構成を示す要部拡大平面図である。
上記したように、位相差層25は、光重合性の液晶を重合硬化させることにより形成される。このため、位相差層25は一般的に柔らかく、位相差層25上に、素子基板91とカラーフィルタ基板92との間隔を規定する役割を果たす柱状のスペーサ35を形成するのには困難を伴う。例え、位相差層25上に柱状のスペーサ35を形成することができたとしても、その柔らかさゆえ、柱状のスペーサ35を、本来的なスペーサとして機能させることはできない。
次に、図2乃至図5(a)を参照して、カラーフィルタ基板92側の位相差層におけるスリットの設定位置について説明する。
上記のように、柱状のスペーサ35は、カラーフィルタ基板92側において、材質的に柔らかな位相差層25と平面的に重ならない領域に設けられていた。ここで、もし、柱状のスペーサ35を、位相差層25のスリット25sの近傍若しくはスリット25sの延在方向の延長線上に設けた場合には、その柱状のスペーサ35が、カラーフィルタ基板92の第2の配向膜26の形成時に、反射表示領域Rを挟む位置に設けられた、透過表示領域T1と透過表示領域T2との間におけるスリット25sを通じた第2の配向膜26の流れを堰き止めてしまう虞がある。
次に、図6(a)等を参照して、本発明の第2実施形態に係るカラーフィルタ基板94の構成について説明する。図6(a)は、図5(a)に対応する、第2実施形態に係るカラーフィルタ基板94の断面図である。
柱状のスペーサ35は、カラーフィルタ基板94側において、材質的に柔らかな位相差層25と平面的に重ならない領域に設けられている。ここで、もし、柱状のスペーサ35を、保護層27のスリット27sの近傍若しくはスリット27sの延在方向の延長線上に設けた場合には、その柱状のスペーサ35が、カラーフィルタ基板94の第2の配向膜26の形成時に、反射表示領域Rを挟む位置に設けられた、透過表示領域T1と透過表示領域T2との間におけるスリット27sを通じた第2の配向膜26の流れを堰き止めてしまう虞がある。
上記の各種の実施形態では、画素電極9は、図2に示すように、平面的に閉じたスリット(開口)9sを複数有して構成されていたが、これに限らず、本発明では、画素電極9は櫛歯形状となるように形成されていても構わない。画素電極9を櫛歯形状とすれば、画素電極9の櫛歯の先端部分を、ゲート線3の第2配線3bの延在方向に隣接する他の画素電極9側へより近づけるように形成することが可能となり、開口率の向上に寄与し得る。但し、その櫛歯の先端付近は開放されているので、その櫛歯の先端付近を、位相差層25のスリット25s又は保護層27のスリット27sの近傍まで延在するように形成してしまうと、スリット25s又は27sの近傍に位置する櫛歯の先端付近は、それに隣接する前記他の画素電極9側からの不要な電界Eの影響を受け易くなり、スリット25s又は27sの近傍に位置する櫛歯の先端付近では、ディスクリネーション(液晶分子の配向異常)が発生し、光漏れなどが生じてしまうといった課題が生じ得る。
次に、上述した第1実施形態(又は第2実施形態)に係る液晶装置100を備える電子機器の具体例について図8を参照して説明する。
Claims (13)
- 液晶層を挟持する一対の第1及び第2の基板を備え、
前記第1の基板は、前記第1の基板の液晶層側に、第1の電極と、前記第1の電極との間で電界を発生させる第2の電極と、反射層と、を備えると共に、前記第2の基板は、前記第2の基板の液晶層側に、複数の色の着色層と、2分の1波長の位相差を有する位相差層と、を備え、
前記第1の基板の前記第1の電極と前記第2の基板との重なり合う領域に対応するサブ画素領域内には、前記第1の基板側から前記液晶層に入射された光を前記第2の基板側に透過させて透過表示を行う透過表示領域と、前記反射層によって前記第2の基板側から前記液晶層に入射された光を前記第2の基板側に反射させて反射表示を行う反射表示領域とが設けられ、
少なくとも前記透過表示領域の前記液晶層の厚さは前記反射表示領域の前記液晶層の厚さより大きく設定されており、
前記反射表示領域に対応する前記液晶層は4分の1波長の位相差を有すると共に、前記透過表示領域に対応する前記液晶層は2分の1波長の位相差を有し、
前記第1の基板の前記液晶層側に対し反対側には、第1の光学軸を有する第1の偏光板が設けられていると共に、前記第2の基板の前記液晶層側に対し反対側には、前記第1の光学軸に対して直交する第2の光学軸を有する第2の偏光板が設けられ、
前記第1の偏光板の前記第1の光学軸及び前記第2の偏光板の前記第2の光学軸のいずれか一方は、前記液晶層の液晶分子の配向軸に対して平行であり、
前記位相差層は、前記液晶層と前記第2の基板との間において、少なくとも前記反射表示領域に対応する位置に設けられ、
前記第1の基板及び前記第2の基板のいずれか一方であって、前記位相差層と平面的に重ならない領域には、前記第1の基板と前記第2の基板の間隔を規定するためのスペーサが設けられていることを特徴とする液晶装置。 - 前記スペーサは前記第2の基板側に設けられていることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶装置。
- 前記スペーサは、前記液晶層の厚さが前記反射表示領域の前記液晶層の厚さよりも大きい領域に設けられていることを特徴とする請求項1又は2に記載の液晶装置。
- 前記サブ画素領域は行列状に複数設けられ、
前記第2の基板側であって、少なくとも前記行の方向に相隣接する前記サブ画素領域の間には遮光層が設けられ、
前記スペーサは、前記遮光層と平面的に重なる位置に設けられていることを特徴とする請求項1乃至3のいずれか一項に記載の液晶装置。 - 前記位相差層は、任意の前記サブ画素領域内に設けられた前記反射表示領域と、当該任意の前記サブ画素領域に対して所定の方向に相隣接する他の前記サブ画素領域内に設けられた他の前記反射表示領域との間に対応する位置にスリットを有することを特徴とする請求項1乃至4のいずれか一項に記載の液晶装置。
- 前記位相差層には、前記所定の方向に相隣接する前記サブ画素領域の間において、前記スリットが設けられた領域と、前記スリットが設けられてない領域とが存在していることを特徴とする請求項5に記載の液晶装置。
- 少なくとも前記位相差層と前記液晶層との間には前記位相差層を覆う保護層が設けられており、前記保護層は、任意の前記サブ画素領域内に設けられた前記反射表示領域と、当該任意の前記サブ画素領域に対して所定の方向に相隣接する他の前記サブ画素領域内に設けられた他の前記反射表示領域との間に対応する位置にスリットを有することを特徴とする請求項1乃至4のいずれか一項に記載の液晶装置。
- 前記保護層には、前記所定の方向に相隣接する前記サブ画素領域の間において、前記他のスリットが設けられた領域と、前記他のスリットが設けられてない領域とが存在していることを特徴とする請求項7に記載の液晶装置。
- 前記スペーサは、任意の前記サブ画素領域を基準として、前記スリット又は前記他のスリットから最も離れた位置に設けられていることを特徴とする請求項5乃至8のいずれか一項に記載の液晶装置。
- 前記スペーサは、前記スリット又は前記他のスリットの延在方向の延長線上に位置していないことを特徴とする請求項9に記載の液晶装置。
- 前記スリットは、前記位相差層において、当該位相差層の厚さ方向に貫通していないことを特徴とする請求項5に記載の液晶装置。
- 前記他のスリットは、前記保護層において、当該保護層の厚さ方向に貫通していないことを特徴とする請求項7に記載の液晶装置。
- 請求項1乃至12のいずれか一項に記載の液晶装置を表示部として備えることを特徴とする電子機器。
