Description
まず、本発明の実施例によるプラズマ表示装置について、図3と図4を参照して詳細に説明する。
この期間は、以前の維持放電期間において形成された壁電荷を消去する役割を担当する。本発明の実施例によると、維持放電期間の最後の時点に、X電極に維持放電電圧パルスが印加され、Y電極にはX電極に印加された電圧より低い電圧(例えば、接地電圧)が印加されたと想定する。以下、図5aのように、Y電極及びアドレス電極には+壁電荷が形成され、X電極及びM電極には−壁電荷が形成される。
この期間の間では、X電極及びY電極に接地電圧を印加した状態で、M電極に電圧VsからVs+Vsetに緩慢に上昇する波形(ランプ波形またはログ波形)を印加する。この上昇波形が印加される間、全ての放電セルではM電極からアドレス電極、X電極及びY電極に、各々弱いリセット放電が起こる。その結果、図5bに示すように、M電極に−壁電荷が蓄積されて、同時にアドレス電極、X電極及びY電極には+壁電荷が蓄積される。
次に、リセット期間の後半では、X電極及びY電極にVbを印加させた状態で、M電極に電圧Vsから負の電圧Vnfに向かって緩慢に下降する波形(ランプ波形またはログ波形)を印加する。
アドレス期間では、複数のM電極にVsch電圧を印加した状態で、M電極に順次に低電位のスキャン電圧(例えば、接地電圧またはVscl)を所定時間だけ印加する、つまり、電圧Vsclのスキャンパルスを印加し、同時にアドレス電極には放電させようとするセル(つまり、点灯させようとするセル)に高電位のアドレス電圧Vaを所定時間だけ印加する。この時、X電極にはVb電圧を印加し、Y電極は接地電圧に維持する(つまり、X電極に、Y電極の電圧より高い電圧を印加する。)。
本発明の第1実施例による維持放電期間によれば、M電極に維持放電電圧Vsを印加した状態で、X電極またはY電極に維持放電電圧パルスを交互に印加する。このような電圧の印加により、アドレス期間において選択された放電セルには維持放電が起こるようになる。
維持放電の開始期間では、図5eのa、bに示すように、Y電極に+電圧パルスが印加され、X電極に−電圧パルスが印加されるが(ここで、+及び−の符号は、X電極に印加された電圧とY電極に印加された電圧の大きさを比較した相対的概念であって、Y電極に+パルス電圧が印加されたということは、Y電極にX電極より大きい電圧が印加されたということを意味する。)、同時にM電極に+電圧パルスが印加される。したがって、X電極とY電極の間にだけ放電が起こる従来方式とは違って、X電極とY電極との間だけでなく、M電極とX電極との間にも放電が起こるようになる。特に、本発明の第1実施例によれば、X電極とY電極の間の距離よりM電極とX電極の間の距離がさらに近いため、M電極とX電極の間に印加される電界がさらに大きい。したがって、M電極とX電極の間の放電が、X電極とY電極の間の放電より主導的な役割を担当する。このように、本発明の第1実施例では、維持放電初期に相対的に距離が短いM電極とX電極の間の放電が主導的な役割を担当することで、これをショートギャップ放電と称する。
維持放電の第1維持放電パルスを印加した後は、M電極の電圧が一定の電圧Vsで印加されるため、M電極とX電極の間の放電、またはM電極とY電極の間の放電(つまり、ショートギャップ放電)は、放電に寄与する寄与度が少なくて、主放電はX電極及びY電極の間の放電になり、結局、X電極またはY電極に交互に印加される放電パルス数によって入力された映像を表示することになる。

- 複数の第1電極と複数の第2電極、前記第1電極と第2電極の間に各々伸びている複数の第3電極、及び前記第3電極と交差する方向に伸びている複数の第4電極を含むプラズマ表示装置の駆動方法であって、
リセット期間において、前記第3電極をフローティングさせた状態で、前記第1電極の電圧を第1電圧から第2電圧まで漸進的に上昇させ、これにより前記第3電極の電圧を第3電圧から第4電圧まで漸進的に上昇させる段階、
前記リセット期間において、前記第3電極の電圧を第5電圧から第6電圧まで漸進的に下降させる段階、
アドレス期間において、前記第3電極に選択的に走査電圧を印加する段階、

前記維持放電電圧のうちの高い電圧である第1電圧を供給する第1電源と、前記維持放電電圧のうちの低い電圧である第2電圧を供給する第2電源の間に直列に連結されて、接続点が前記第1電極に電気的に連結される第1スイッチと第2スイッチ、また、第3電圧を供給する第3電源と前記第1電極の間に電気的に連結されて、前記第1電極の電圧を漸進的に上昇させるように動作する第3スイッチを備える第1電極駆動部;
前記第1電源と前記第2電源の間に直列に連結され、接続点が前記第2電極に電気的に連結される第10スイッチと第11スイッチを備える第2電極駆動部;及び
第1端子が前記第3電極に連結されて選択された前記第3電極に第2端子の走査電圧を印加する第7スイッチと、第4電圧を供給する第4電源と前記第7スイッチの第2端子の間に電気的に連結されて、前記第3電極の電圧が漸進的に下降するように動作する第4スイッチ、及び第2端子が前記第3電極に連結されて選択されない前記第3電極に第1端子の非走査電圧を供給する第8スイッチを各々備える複数の選択回路と、前記第7スイッチの第2端子と前記走査電圧を供給する第6電源との間に電気的に連結される第9スイッチとを備える第3電極駆動部を備え、
リセット期間において、前記第4スイッチ、前記第8スイッチ、及び前記第9スイッチを導通から遮断に変化させて前記第3電極をフローティングさせた状態で前記第3スイッチを遮断から導通に変化させて前記第3電極の電圧を漸進的に上昇させた後、前記第4スイッチを遮断から導通に変化させて前記第3電極の電圧を漸進的に下降させる
ことを特徴とするプラズマ表示装置。 - 維持放電電圧パルスが各々印加される第1電極と第2電極、前記第1電極と前記第2電極の間に伸びている第3電極を含むプラズマ表示パネル;及び
前記第1から第3電極を駆動するための信号を出力する駆動回路を備え、
前記駆動回路は、
前記維持放電電圧のうちの高い電圧である第1電圧を供給する第1電源と、前記維持放電電圧のうちの低い電圧である第2電圧を供給する第2電源の間に直列に連結されて、接続点が前記第1電極に電気的に連結される第1スイッチと第2スイッチ、また、第3電圧を供給する第3電源と前記第1電極の間に電気的に連結されて、前記第1電極の電圧を漸進的に上昇させるように動作する第3スイッチを備える第1電極駆動部;
前記第1電源と前記第2電源の間に直列に連結され、接続点が前記第2電極に電気的に連結される第10スイッチと第11スイッチを備える第2電極駆動部;及び
第1端子が前記第3電極に連結されて選択された前記第3電極に第2端子の走査電圧を印加する第7スイッチと、第4電圧を供給する第4電源と前記第7スイッチの第2端子の間に電気的に連結されて、前記第3電極の電圧が漸進的に下降するように動作する第4スイッチ、及び第2端子が前記第3電極に連結されて選択されない前記第3電極に第1端子の非走査電圧を供給する第8スイッチを各々備える複数の選択回路と、前記第7スイッチの第2端子と前記走査電圧を供給する第6電源との間に電気的に連結される第9スイッチとを備える第3電極駆動部を備え、
リセット期間において、前記第7スイッチ及び前記第8スイッチを遮断して前記第3電極をフローティングさせた状態で前記第3スイッチを遮断から導通に変化させて前記第3電極の電圧を漸進的に上昇させた後、前記第4スイッチ及び前記第7スイッチを遮断から導通に変化させて前記第3電極の電圧を漸進的に下降させる
ことを特徴とするプラズマ表示装置。 - 前記プラズマ表示パネルは、前記第3電極と交差する方向に形成される複数の第4電極をさらに含み、
前記駆動回路は、
前記アドレス期間において、前記複数の第3電極に選択的に前記走査電圧が印加されるたびに、前記複数の第4電極のうちの選択された第4電極にアドレス電圧を印加する第4電極駆動部をさらに備える
ことを特徴とする請求項3または請求項4のいずれかに記載のプラズマ表示装置。
