Description
上記した配向膜には、以下の事情により局所的なピンホールが生じる可能性がある。
本発明の表示パネルの製造方法は、互いに対向した一対の基板間に液晶を挟持するとともに、両基板における対向面に配向膜が形成された構成の表示パネルを製造する過程で、前記配向膜の膜欠損部の有無を検査する検査工程と、前記膜欠損部の位置を検出する位置検出工程と、前記膜欠損部の少なくとも一部に配向膜補修剤を付着させて膜欠損部を修理する修理工程とを経るようにした。
(1)前記表示パネルの製造方法における前記修理工程では、前記配向膜補修剤を付着させた転写手段から前記膜欠損部に配向膜補修剤を転写させるスタンプ手法を用いるようにする。また、前記表示パネルの製造装置における前記補修剤付着手段は、前記膜欠損部に前記配向膜補修剤を転写させる転写手段を備える構成とする。これにより、修理工程で、例えば配向膜補修剤の液滴を膜欠損部に滴下する手法を用いた場合と比較して、補修箇所の膜厚の制御が容易なものとなる。

本発明の一実施形態を図1ないし図17によって説明する。本実施形態では、液晶表示装置10を構成する液晶パネル11について例示する。なお、以下では、図1に示す下側を裏側、逆の上側を表側として説明する。
本発明は上記記述及び図面によって説明した実施形態に限定されるものではなく、例えば次のような実施形態も本発明の技術的範囲に含まれる。
Claims (11)
- 互いに対向した一対の基板間に液晶を挟持するとともに、両基板における対向面に、前記液晶を基板面に対して略垂直に配向させる垂直配向膜が形成された構成の表示パネルの製造方法であって、
基板上に、液晶分子の配向方向を規制するための段差部を形成する工程と、
前記段差部を有した基板面上に、前記垂直配向膜を形成する工程と、
前記垂直配向膜の膜欠損部の有無を検査する検査工程と、
前記膜欠損部の位置を検出する位置検出工程と、
前記膜欠損部の少なくとも一部に垂直配向膜補修剤を付着させて膜欠損部を修理する修理工程と、を含み、
前記修理工程では、可撓性を有する多孔質材料からなる転写ヘッドに前記垂直配向膜補修剤を付着させ、当該転写ヘッドを、前記段差部に形成された前記膜欠損部に押し当てることで当該段差部の段差形状に応じて弾性変形させつつ、前記垂直配向膜補修剤を当該膜欠損部に転写することを特徴とする表示パネルの製造方法。 - 前記修理工程において、前記転写ヘッドにより前記垂直配向膜補修剤が転写された箇所の膜厚が50nm〜200nmとなることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の表示パネルの製造方法。
- 前記垂直配向膜補修剤として、溶媒中に垂直配向膜材料を溶かしてなるものを用いるとともに、修理後に前記転写ヘッドを垂直配向膜補修剤中に浸して待機させるようにしたことを特徴とする請求項1又は請求項2に記載の表示パネルの製造方法。
- 前記修理工程に先だって、前記膜欠損部に対して前記垂直配向膜補修剤を付着しやすくするための表面改質工程を経るようにしたことを特徴とする請求項1ないし請求項3のいずれか1項に記載の表示パネルの製造方法。
- 前記表面改質工程では、前記膜欠損部に紫外光を照射するようにしたことを特徴とする請求項4に記載の表示パネルの製造方法。
- 前記紫外光の波長について146nm〜365nmとしたことを特徴とする請求項5に記載の表示パネルの製造方法。
- 互いに対向した一対の基板間に液晶を挟持するとともに、両基板における対向面に、前記液晶を基板面に対して略垂直に配向させる垂直配向膜が形成され、液晶分子の配向方向を規制するための段差部を備えた構成の表示パネルの製造装置であって、
前記垂直配向膜の膜欠損部の有無を検査する検査手段と、
前記膜欠損部の位置を検出する位置検出手段と、
前記膜欠損部の少なくとも一部に垂直配向膜補修剤を付着させて膜欠損部を修理する補修剤付着手段とを備え、
前記補修剤付着手段は、可撓性を有する多孔質材料からなる転写ヘッドであって、当該転写ヘッドに前記垂直配向膜補修剤を付着させ、その転写ヘッドを前記段差部に形成された前記膜欠損部に押し当てることで当該段差部の段差形状に応じて弾性変形させつつ、前記垂直配向膜補修剤を当該膜欠損部に転写することを特徴とする表示パネルの製造装置。 - 溶媒中に垂直配向膜材料を溶かしてなる前記垂直配向膜補修剤が溜められるとともに、修理後に待機する前記転写ヘッドが収容可能とされる乾燥防止手段を備えていることを特徴とする請求項7に記載の表示パネルの製造装置。
- 前記膜欠損部に対して前記垂直配向膜補修剤を付着しやすくするよう膜欠損部の表面を改質する表面改質手段が備えられていることを特徴とする請求項7又は請求項8に記載の表示パネルの製造装置。
- 前記表面改質手段は、前記膜欠損部に紫外光を照射する紫外光照射部を備えていることを特徴とする請求項9に記載の表示パネルの製造装置。
- 前記紫外光照射部は、146nm〜365nmの波長の前記紫外光を照射できるようになっていることを特徴とする請求項10に記載の表示パネルの製造装置。
