Description
関連技術のIPSモードの液晶パネルは、図1に図示されたように、表面に第1配向膜14Aが形成された上部基板10と、表面に画素電極16Aと共通電極16B及び第2配向膜14Bが順次形成された下部基板12を具備する。これら上部基板10及び下部基板12は、第1及び第2配向膜14A、14B等が互いに対向するように合着され、前記第1及び第2配向膜14A、14Bの間には液晶層18が注入されるようになる。
図2を参照すれば、薄膜トランジスターのオン/オフはゲート電圧によって決定される。通常、21V程度であるゲートハイ電圧Vghが印加されればゲートが開かれてオンになり、−5Vであるゲートロー電圧Vglが印加されればゲートが閉じてオフになる。
しかし、関連技術の液晶表示装置の場合、図示されたように、前記データ印加電圧V1、V2による応答速度200、210が遅く動画イメージを再生することが困難だという短所がある。
図3は、本発明の一実施例による横電界方式の液晶パネルの構造を説明する断面図である。この実施例は、強誘電性液晶を配向膜で使用するIPSモード液晶パネルの一実施例であるが、本発明による駆動方法は、前記構造の液晶表示装置に必ず限定されるものではない。
立ち上がり時間(rising time)τon即ち、オフからオンになる時の応答速度及び立ち下がり時間(falling time)τoff即ち、オンからオフになる時の応答速度はそれぞれ下式で示される。
これは、前述したように前記強誘電性液晶の逆回転スイッチング性質によるものである。
結果的に、図7のような方式に駆動する場合にも立ち下がり時間710を減らすことができ、またこれはブラックデータを挿入する効果をもたらして、結果的に明暗比(contrast ratio)も改善される。
Claims (9)
- 横電界方式の液晶表示装置として、対向する2つの基板と、前記基板のそれぞれに互いに対向するよう形成された画素電極及び共通電極と、前記基板間に充填された液晶層と、前記電極それぞれと前記液晶層との間に位置するように前記基板それぞれに形成され、強誘電性液晶ポリマーを包含する配向膜を具備する液晶表示装置の駆動方法であって、
前記共通電極に直流の共通電圧を印加する段階と、
ゲート信号をゲートラインに印加する段階と、
前記ゲート信号が印加される区間の間、第1補償電圧を前記画素電極に印加する段階と、
前記ゲート信号が印加される区間の直後にデータ電圧を前記画素電極に印加する段階と
を具備し、
前記第1補償電圧と前記共通電圧との電圧差は、前記データ電圧と前記共通電圧との電圧差よりも大きい
ことを特徴とする液晶表示装置の駆動方法。 - 前記第1補償電圧の絶対値は、前記データ電圧より大きい
ことを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置の駆動方法。 - 前記第1補償電圧の極性は、前記データ電圧の極性と同じである
ことを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置の駆動方法。 - 前記配向膜は、前記共通電極と前記画素電極との間に印加される電界により前記液晶層の配向方向を前記基板の表面と平行な面に変更させる
ことを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置の駆動方法。 - 前記液晶層は、ネガティブタイプの液晶層である
ことを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置の駆動方法。 - 前記データ電圧が印加された直後に前記データ電圧と反対極性を有する第2補償電圧を前記画素電極に印加する段階をさらに具備した
ことを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置の駆動方法。 - 前記データ電圧が印加された直後に前記データ電圧と同一極性を有する第2補償電圧を前記共通電極に印加する段階をさらに具備した
ことを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置の駆動方法。 - 前記第2補償電圧は、短い時間の間、非対称的に印加される
ことを特徴とする請求項6または7に記載の液晶表示装置の駆動方法。 - 前記第2補償電圧は、短い時間の間、非対称的に印加される
ことを特徴とする請求項6に記載の液晶表示装置の駆動方法。
