Description
このモードでは、ゲームコンソール60の動作にネットワーク接続が不要であり、ゲームプログラムは、CD−ROMまたはDVD−ROM等のディスク状の記録媒体70からゲームコンソール60のメインメモリ114にロードされ、このゲームプログラムが実行されると、サウンドおよびグラフィックの制御が、ゲーム用のコントローラまたは入力装置132を介したユーザーの入力に従って、イメージプロセッサ120、IPU138、および(または)SPU171によって処理され、その結果、オーディオ出力およびビデオ出力がディスプレイモニタ80に転送される。この場合、通常、テレビモニタ80は、NTSCフォーマットまたはPALフォーマット等の一般的なTVフォーマットに対応している。
このモードでは、図3の従来の方法に従ってネットワーク40を介したオンラインゲーム体験が可能になる。
この実施の形態においては、この発明によって、ユーザーがネットワークに接続されたゲームコンソール60のグラフィック再生能力を超えた高解像度のグラフィック品質を楽しむことが可能となる。
現在オンラインゲームを行っていないユーザーまたはネットワークに接続されたゲームコンソールを持っていないユーザーに対しても、ケーブルテレビネットワーク40のヘッドエンド施設は、視聴者に対して進行中のオンラインゲームコンテンツをテレビモニタ80上で視聴する機会を提供することができる。即ち、このシステムは、潜在的なユーザーに対する製品のマーケティング活動を行う機会をオンラインゲームサービスプロバイダおよびゲームコンテンツ供給者に提供するものである。
参加者は、ゲームコンソール60のコントローラ132を通じて種々の問題に対して投票または回答を行うことが可能である。複数のユーザーから受信した投票は、サーバー10側で集計される。サーバー10からの投票結果を示すグラフ出力は、ケーブルテレビネットワーク40を通じて導入され、テレビモニタ80に表示される。
競馬またはルーレットなどの擬似的なギャンブルのシナリオの実現が可能である。ユーザーは、ネットワークに接続されたゲームコンソール60のコントローラ等の入力装置132を用いてケーブルテレビネットワーク40を通じてベットを行うことが可能である。ゲームサーバー10は、所定時間分のベットの結果を集計し、ベットが終了したときに、ユーザーにギャンブルを擬似的に体験させる。
複数のユーザーがそれぞれ楽器または他の芸術的な道具を担当している場合を想定する。各々の道具は、ネットワークに接続されたゲームコンソール60に割り当てられ、コントローラ(入力装置)132によって使用される。ユーザーがネットワークに接続されたゲームコンソール60を通じて入力操作を行うと、入力データがゲームサーバー10に伝送される。
ネットワークに接続されたゲームコンソール60を用いて視聴者のアクションによってインタラクティブに決定されたシナリオまたは筋書きを描写したインタラクティブなドラマが実現される。ドラマの進行中、常時、複数の視聴者によって選択された入力アクションが集計され、多数存在するものが尊重されるように(または、少数存在するものが尊重される場合もあり、他の統計的な決定方法が用いられることもある)、ユーザーから受信した入力によってシナリオの結末が修正される。
以上説明したように、この発明によれば、サーバー側の施設と、コンソールおよび表示装置を有するクライアント側の施設とがネットワークを介して接続されているオンラインコンテンツを提供するシステムまたは方法において、サーバー側から前記クライアント側の表示装置にビデオ信号を直接伝送可能に構成している。

Claims (8)
- プログラムコンポーネントを実行して第1のビデオ信号を出力するとともにオンラインコンテンツの提供を要求するオンラインコンテンツ要求信号を出力するコンソールと、
前記第1のビデオ信号による画像を表示する表示装置と、
前記コンソールと前記表示装置とに接続されたネットワーク接続器と、を有するオンラインコンテンツ表示システムであって、
前記ネットワーク接続器は、前記コンソールから出力された前記オンラインコンテンツ要求信号に応じてオンラインコンテンツを提供するサーバに通信ネットワークを介して接続可能であり、
前記ネットワーク接続器は、前記通信ネットワークを介して前記サーバが提供する前記オンラインコンテンツをデータ信号と第2のビデオ信号に分割し、前記データ信号を前記コンソールに、前記第2のビデオ信号を前記表示装置に送信する信号分割器を備え、
前記コンソールに対して前記第1のビデオ信号を無効にする入力操作が行われたとき、前記表示装置上に、前記第2のビデオ信号による画像が表示される
ことを特徴とするオンラインコンテンツ表示システム。 - プログラムコンポーネントを実行して第1のビデオ信号を出力するとともにオンラインコンテンツの提供を要求するオンラインコンテンツ要求信号を出力するコンソールと、
前記第1のビデオ信号による画像を表示する表示装置と、
前記コンソールと前記表示装置とに接続されたネットワーク接続器と、を有するオンラインコンテンツ表示システムであって、
前記ネットワーク接続器は、前記コンソールから出力された前記オンラインコンテンツ要求信号に応じてオンラインコンテンツを提供するサーバに通信ネットワークを介して接続可能であり、
前記ネットワーク接続器は、前記通信ネットワークを介して前記サーバが提供する前記オンラインコンテンツをデータ信号と第2のビデオ信号に分割し、前記データ信号を前記コンソールに、前記第2のビデオ信号を前記表示装置に送信する信号分割器を備え、
前記コンソールは、前記表示装置の解像度が前記コンソールの表示能力を上回ると判別したとき、前記第1のビデオ信号の出力を無効とし、
前記表示装置上で前記第2のビデオ信号による高解像度の画像が表示される
ことを特徴とするオンラインコンテンツ表示システム。 - 請求項1又は2記載のオンラインコンテンツ表示システムにおいて、
前記オンラインコンテンツ要求信号は、前記サーバで実行されるプログラムに対する命令データを含み、
前記オンラインコンテンツは、前記命令データに応じて内容が更新されるものであることを特徴とするオンラインコンテンツ表示システム。 - 請求項1乃至3のいずれか1項に記載のオンラインコンテンツ表示システムにおいて、
前記オンラインコンテンツは、オンラインゲームのコンテンツであることを特徴とするオンラインコンテンツ表示システム。 - コンソールにおいてプログラムコンポーネントを実行して第1のビデオ信号を生成し、この第1のビデオ信号による画像を表示装置で表示する第1の画像表示ステップと、
ネットワーク接続器及び通信ネットワークを介して前記コンソールに接続されたサーバに対し、オンラインコンテンツの提供を要求するオンラインコンテンツ要求信号を前記コンソールから送信するオンラインコンテンツ要求ステップと、
前記通信ネットワークを介して前記サーバから提供されたオンラインコンテンツを、前記ネットワーク接続器に含まれる信号分割器によりデータ信号と第2のビデオ信号に分割する信号分割ステップと、
前記データ信号を前記信号分割器から前記コンソールに送信するデータ信号送信ステップと、
前記第2のビデオ信号を前記信号分割器からこの信号分割器に接続された前記表示装置に送信する第2のビデオ信号送信ステップと、
前記コンソールに対して前記第1のビデオ信号を無効にする入力操作が行われたとき、前記第2のビデオ信号による画像を前記表示装置に表示する第2の画像表示ステップと
を有するオンラインコンテンツ表示方法。 - コンソールにおいてプログラムコンポーネントを実行して第1のビデオ信号を生成し、この第1のビデオ信号による画像を表示装置に表示する第1の画像表示ステップと、
ネットワーク接続器及び通信ネットワークを介して前記コンソールに接続されたサーバに対し、オンラインコンテンツの提供を要求するオンラインコンテンツ要求信号を前記コンソールから送信するオンラインコンテンツ要求ステップと、
前記通信ネットワークを介して前記サーバから提供された前記オンラインコンテンツを、前記ネットワーク接続器に含まれる信号分割器によりデータ信号と第2のビデオ信号に分割する信号分割ステップと、
前記データ信号を前記信号分割器から前記コンソールに送信するデータ信号送信ステップと、
前記第2のビデオ信号を前記信号分割器からこの信号分割器に接続された前記表示装置に送信する第2のビデオ信号送信ステップと、
前記表示装置の解像度が前記コンソールの表示能力を上回るか否かを前記コンソールにおいて判定する解像度判定ステップと、
前記解像度判定ステップにおいて、前記表示装置の解像度が前記コンソールの表示能力を上回ると判定したとき、前記第1のビデオ信号の出力を無効とし、前記第2のビデオ信号による高解像度の画像を前記表示装置に表示する第2の画像表示ステップと
を有するオンラインコンテンツ表示方法。 - 請求項5又は6記載のオンラインコンテンツ表示方法において、
前記オンラインコンテンツ要求信号は、前記サーバで実行されるプログラムに対する命令データを含み、
前記オンラインコンテンツは、前記命令データに応じて内容が更新されるものであることを特徴とするオンラインコンテンツ表示方法。 - 請求項5乃至7のいずれか1項に記載のオンラインコンテンツ表示方法おいて、
前記オンラインコンテンツは、オンラインゲームのコンテンツであることを特徴とするオンラインコンテンツ表示方法。
