スの製造方法に関し、特に温度に対し安定性を向上させ
た光学導波路デバイスの製造方法に関する。

プするデバイスに対する必要性が高まっている。例えば
音声信号とビデオ信号を家庭に分配する、光増幅器内で
ポンプ信号と通信信号とを結合する、監視信号を光ファ
イバに付加するのに必要とされるブロードバンドの光学
マルチプレクサが必要とされている。高密度の波長分割
多重化(WDM)システムは、トラフィックを変更する
ために様々な種類の波長のチャネルを結合し、分離する
マルチプレクサを必要とし、さらに追加/ドロップフィ
ルタを必要とする。低速の光スイッチがネットワークの
再構成に必要とされている。

シリカ製導波路回路により実現されている。このような
導波路は、シリコン製基板状にベース層とコア層とクラ
ッド層を堆積することにより形成される。このベース層
は、アンドープのシリカ製である。このベース層は、基
本光学モードをシリコン製基板から分離し、これにより
シリコン製基板界面での光学損失を回避している。
またはGeでドープしたシリカであり、これにより光学
閉じ込めを達成している。クラッド層は、製造を容易に
し、ベース層の屈折率に適合させるためにBまたはPで
もってドープしたシリカである。公知の光リソグラフ技
術を用いて、このコア層は有効な機能を達成することが
できるような、様々な種類のコンパクトな構造に経済的
に構成することができる。これに関しては、Y.P. Li と
C.H. Henry 著の "Silicon Optical Bench Waveguide
Technology", Ch. 8, Optical Fiber Telecommunicatio
ns, Vol. IIIB,p. 319-375(Academic Press, 1997 )

囲に形成されている。様々な種類の全光ファイバデバイ
スが、光ファイバコア中にブラググレーティングを形成
することにより形成される。このようなグレーティング
は、Geのような感光性ドーパントを有するコアを用意
し、紫外線を用いてグレーティングを側面から書き込む
ことにより形成される。

渉に依存している。再構成された点でのビーム間の位相
関係によって、光は、透過したり反射したりする。スペ
クトラムが狭くコントラスト比が高い共鳴点が高性能の

させる。しかし、様々な周囲温度は、このようなデバイ
スの性能に悪影響をもたらす。光が伝播する合成ガラス
構造体の屈折率は、温度に依存している。かくして臨界
的な共鳴のスペクトラム位置は、温度と共にシフトして
しまう。

らのパス長は、屈折率の温度依存性およびグレーティン
グの動作波長のシフトにより変化する。

定した動作を行わせるために、温度補償を行ったパッケ
ージ内にこれらのデバイスを配置している。しかし、こ
れらのパッケージは、コストが高くまた信頼性にも問題
がある。したがって本発明の目的は、温度に対し安定性
を向上させた導波路デバイスを提供することである。
向上させたガラス製導波路デバイスは、適当な長さの導
波路にこの導波路の屈折率とは大幅に異なる屈折率を有
する透明な温度補償材料を組み込んでいる。この温度補
償材料は、非ガラス材料で、例えば熱および圧力により
ガラスの中に導入される液体である。好ましい実施例に
おいては、D2Oが光通信用導波路内に組み込まれる。
このD2O は、1.55μmを中心とする通信波長に対
しては透明であり、そのdn/dTは、ガラスのdn/
dTと反対極性を有する。このようにして得られた構造
体は、dn/dTの大きさを低減した熱的安定性を向上
させる。

おいては、反対極性の温度補償材料が熱的安定性を向上
させる。

(ブロックA)では、改善すべきガラス製導波路デバイ
スを用意する。この導波路デバイスは、平面状導波路デ
バイスかファイバ形状の導波路デバイスかのいずれかあ
るいはその組み合わせである。代表的なデバイスは、ル
ータ,フーリエフィルタ,ブラググレーティング等であ
る。
アンドープのシリカ製のベース層11と1つあるいは複
数のコア12,13,14により形成される導波路とク
ラッド層15とを含む導波路デバイス(ここでは平面状
導波路デバイス)の断面図である。このコアはPドープ
のあるいはGeドープのシリカで、その屈折率はベース
層11に比較して(通常Δ=0.60−0.70%程
度)大きい。クラッド層15は、BまたはPをドープし
て流動開始温度を低下させ、ベース層11とほぼ等しい
屈折率を有するようにする。

を与える。このような導波路の製造方法は公知であり、
例えばC.H. Henry et al. "Glass Waveguides on Silic
on for Hybrid Optical Packaging, J. Lightwave Tech
nol., 1539 (1989) に詳述されている。

が、導波路にマスクをして温度による屈折率変動(dn
/dT)を変化させるような領域を露出させることであ
る。導波路の全長に亘ってdn/dTを変化させる場合
には、マスキングは不要である。しかし、複数の導波路
に沿って温度変化の影響を等しくさせるようなアプリケ
ーションにおいては異なる長さの導波路を異なる長さだ
け露出させるために、マスキングをする必要がある。マ
スキング材料は、処理材料に対し不浸透性のものでなけ
ればならない。1μmオーダーの厚さの窒化シリコン製
フィルムは、D2O でもって処理するマスキングデバイ
スに対し好ましい材料である。このようなフィルムは、
プラズマCVDにより堆積することができる。
波路の露出領域に熱温度補償材料を組み込むことであ
る。この熱温度補償材料は、動作波長に対して透明であ
り、導波路材料のdn/dTとは異なったdn/dTを
有する。通常導波路を構成するガラスは、正のdn/d
Tを有するため、このガラスに導入される材料は、負の
dn/dTを有するか、あるいはガラスのそれとは大幅
に異なる正のdn/dTを有するものでなければならな
い。このような負のdn/dTを有する温度補償材料
は、D2O ,エタノール,メタノール等である。この導
入されるべき温度補償材料の量は、ガラスに対し1重量
%以上でなければならない。好ましくは10%以上でな
ければならない。D2O は、1.55μmで動作するガ
ラス製通信デバイスに対して好ましい温度補償材料であ
る。

大きい正のdn/dTを有する温度補償材料を用いた場
合には、補償を達成するためには、短い導波路を長い距
離に亘って処理することである。

百nmの厚さのコーティング層を露出領域20の上に形
成することにより行われる。
度補償の程度を以下の具体的な例を用いて示す。第1サ
ンプルは、2cm長さの平面状導波路でD2O でもって
300℃で15時間処理したものである。第2サンプル
は、2cm長さの未処理の平面状導波路である。1.5
μmのレーザ光がこれらの2個のサンプルに照射され、
温度を室温から約40℃上の約62℃まで上昇させた。

理した第1サンプルの温度に対し干渉フリンジをプロッ
トしたもので、図3Bは未処理の第2サンプルの干渉フ
リンジを示したものである。これらの図から分かるよう
に、処理済みの第1サンプルは、dn/dTの小さな値
に対応するより少ないフリンジを有する。
プルに対するdn/dTの大きさは、未処理の第2のサ
ンプルに対するそれの9/16であり、このため強化係
数eはe=0.56(56%)である。長さの異なるl
1,l2の2個の導波路を補償するのに必要な処理領域の
長さlは、長さの差Δl=|l1−l2|と強化係数e
で、関係式l=Δl/eを用いて容易に計算することが
できる。その結果例えば、Δl=0.25mmでe=
0.5とすると処理領域の長さlは0.5mmである。

路の製造に用いることができる。一般的に本発明の適用
されるデバイスは通常の方法で製造され、その後図1の
プロセスを適用してガラス製導波路の温度依存性屈折率
を変化させる。マルチ導波路デバイスにおいては、この
屈折率変化は、様々な種類の導波路に温度の影響を等し
くするために空間的に選択した方法で適用し、これによ
り導波路デバイスの温度の感受性をなくすようにする。
依存性の低減は、dn/dTを最少にすることに比例し
ている。3種類の重要なデバイスのアプリケーションを
示すと、1)マルチ導波路ルータの温度補償、2)マル
チ導波路ファイバの温度補償、3)シングル導波路ブラ
ググレーティングの温度依存性の低減である。

レイ)43により接続された一対のスターカプラ41,
42を有する。この導波路列43は、隣接する導波路間
では一定のパス長差である。この2個のスターカプラ4
1,42は、対称型であるが、入力数と出力数とは異な
る。
導波路44からの光の波は、スターカプラ41により導
波路列43内に結合される。この導波路列43内に差分
位相シフトが存在しない場合には、スターカプラ42へ
の光波伝播は、入力カプラ41内にあたかも反復伝播が
存在するかのように現れる。かくして入力導波路は、出
力カプラと出力導波路間のインタフェースとして考える
ことができる。このイメージされた入力導波路は、出力
導波路の1つに接続される。
差により導波路グレーティング内のウェーブフロントの
波長依存性の傾きとなり、入力導波路のイメージを波長
依存性位置にシフトさせる。波長が変化するにつれて、
入力導波路イメージは、出力導波路に亘って移動して、
別の出力導波路に光を結合させる。この従来のデバイス
の構造と動作の詳細は、米国特許第5,467,418
号に開示されている。
導波路グレーティング内にdn/dTを変化させた領域
を導入して構成要素である導波路の熱的応答を補償する
ことにより改善される。これは図1のプロセスを用いる
ことにより、D2O をアレイの三角領域45に導入する
ことにより行われる。この三角領域45の底辺bは、よ
り長い波長が三角領域45の領域でより長い処理領域を
有するよう配置される。
レーティングアレイの三角形の底辺は、1cmのオーダ
ーの長さである。しかし、負のdn/dT温度補償材料
を用いる代わりに、ガラスよりもはるかに大きい正のd
n/dTを有する温度補償材料を用いて、三角領域45
を逆転させて補償を行い、そして最短の導波路が最長の
領域に亘って処理されるようして補償を行ってもよい。
形成された光学導波路フィルタ10の簡単化した図面で
ある。従来のフーリエフィルタは、基板53上に一対の
光学導波路51,52を有し、これらが(N−1)個の
遅延パス57,58により交互に接続された複数のN個
の光学カプラ54,55,56を形成する。各カプラ
は、2個の導波路の近接領域を含み、この近接領域では
各光学導波路51,52を伝播する光の指数テイルが、
他の光と相互作用してある導波路から別の導波路に光を
結合する。ある導波路から別の導波路へ結合された光学
パワーの量は、カプラの有効長によって決定できる。
波路セグメントを含み、例えばこれは光学カプラ54,
55の間でセグメント57A,57Bである。これらの
セグメントは、2個のカプラ間に等しくない光学パス長
を与えるよう構成され、これにより差分遅延を提供す
る。
学入力信号が入力カプラ上に、例えば光学カプラ54で
は光学導波路51に沿って現れ、そしてフィルタ処理さ
れた出力が出力カプラ上に、例えば光学カプラ56の光
学導波路52に沿って現れる。カプラと遅延要素により
出力への複数のパスを具備する入力点に光を与える。一
般的にNがカプラの数であるとすると2N-1 のパスが存
在する。
和要素に対応する光を与える。このフーリエ列の和がフ
ィルタの伝送関数を構成する。パラメータを適宜選択す
ることにより所望の伝達関数に近似することができる。
このようなフィルタの構造と製造方法は、米国特許第
5,596,661号に開示されている。
た導波路間の差分遅延の正確な制御に依存する。温度変
化の異なる影響に起因するこの差分遅延の変動がフィル
タの性能に悪影響を及ぼす。
法によりdn/dTを変化させた領域59A,59Bを
形成することにより温度補償することができる。好まし
くは領域59A,59Bは、例えばセグメント57B,
58Bのようなより長い導波路に形成するのがよい。図
3Aに示されるような変化のレベルを仮定すると、一般
的なフーリエフィルタの補償は、パス長の差が約2倍と
なるような長さを有する矩形の領域により達成できる。
ティング 図6は、ある長さの光学導波路60(ここでは光ファイ
バ)を有する光学導波路ブラググレーティングデバイス
の断面図である。この光学導波路60は、コア61とク
ラッド62とブラググレーティング63とを有し、この
ブラググレーティング63は導波路に沿ってほぼ等しく
離間したコアの屈折率に複数の屈折率変動64を有す
る。この屈折率変動64は、連続する変動間のスペース
Λの2倍となるような波長λの光、即ちλ=2Λを選択
的に反射する。残りの波長は、何の損傷も受けずに通過
する。
なアプリケーションにおいて例えばフィルタ処理,半導
体レーザの安定化,光ファイバ増幅器のポンプエネルギ
の反射,光ファイバの分散補償等のアプリケーションで
用いることができる。ブラグ共鳴の熱的感受性は、導波
路内に書き込まれたdn/dTに大部分が依存する。本
発明によれば、熱的安定性は図1の方法に従って導波路
の熱的感受性を低減することにより向上させることがで
きる。
部分65を露出させ、そこにグレーティングが書き込ま
れる。純粋のシリカ製クラッドが用いられる光ファイバ
導波路の場合においては、別のクラッド例えばPドープ
のあるいはBドープのシリカを用いてD2O を導入する
ことが必要である。平面状導波路ブラググレーティング
においては、クラッド層の成分を変化させる必要はな
い。

Claims (5)
- 【請求項1】 コアとクラッド層を有し、温度と共にそ
の有効屈折率が変化するガラス製の光学導波路を形成す
るステップを含む光学導波路デバイスの製造方法におい
て、 ある長さの前記ガラス製光学導波路は、温度により屈折
率が変動する温度補償材料を1重量%以上含有し、 この温度補償材料の屈折率変動は、前記光学導波路のそ
れとは異なり、 これにより光学導波路デバイスの熱的安定性を向上さ
せ、 前記温度補償材料はD 2 O で、これは、前記領域にD
2 Oの蒸気の温度範囲が100−300℃で、圧力が1
5−1500psiで、処理時間が1時間から20時間
の条件でさらすことにより前記領域に導入される ことを
特徴とする光学導波路デバイスの製造方法。 - 【請求項2】 前記領域上に金属をコーティングするこ
とにより前記領域内に温度補償材料を閉じ込めるステッ
プをさらに有することを特徴とする請求項1記載の方
法。 - 【請求項3】 前記導波路デバイスは、導波路ルータで
あることを特徴とする請求項1記載のデバイス。 - 【請求項4】 前記導波路デバイスは、フーリエ光学フ
ィルタであることを特徴とする請求項1記載のデバイ
ス。 - 【請求項5】 前記導波路デバイスは、光学ブラググレ
ーティングであることを特徴とする請求項1記載のデバ
イス。
