Description
この偏波依存性を解消する一つの方法として、図12に示すように、AWGの中央部でアレイ導波路4中に主軸が45°傾いた1/2波長板7を溝8を介して挿入する方法が使われている。(非特許文献4参照)。
AWGの上記偏波依存性を解消する別の方法として、石英系ガラスにドーパントを多量に入れて、シリコン基板と同等の熱膨張係数を持たせることにより、AWGの作製時に生じる熱応力を低減し、結果的に偏波依存性を解消する報告もなされている。(非特許文献5参照)。
図1に本発明の第1の参考例としての偏波無依存AWG(アレイ導波路格子型光波長合分波器)の回路構成を示す。このAWGには100本のアレイ導波路104が配置されており、スラブ導波路102および105との接続部のテーパ(図示せず)を除き、そのアレイ導波路104のコア幅が1本1本異なる。その他の構成は上述した従来例の、図11のAWGと同様である。ここで、101は入力導波路、102は入力側のスラブ導波路、103はシリコン基板、105は出力側のスラブ導波路、106は出力導波路である。
図7に本発明の第2の参考例としてチャンネル間隔100GHz(FSR200GHz)の非対称マッハツェンダ光干渉計の構成を示す。本第2の参考例は、上記第1の参考例の偏波無依存化の原理を非対称マッハツェンダ光干渉計に適用したものである。
図10に本発明の一実施形態としての偏波ビームスプリッタの構成を示す。ここで、1701はコア幅7ミクロンの入力導波路、1702は入力側の50%方向性結合器、1703はコア幅5ミクロンのアーム導波路、1704はコア幅10ミクロンのアーム導波路、1705は出力側の50%方向性結合器、1706はコア幅7ミクロンの出力導波路である。
以上述べた本発明の各実施形態では、シリコン基板上の石英系ガラス導波路を用いた光干渉計を示したが、その導波路材料がポリイミド、シリコーン、半導体、LiNbO3などであっても本発明の上記の原理は適用可能である。また、基板もシリコンに限定するものではない。

Claims (1)
- シリコン基板上の石英系ガラス導波路で構成され、コアの内部応力がクラッドの内部応力に比べて2倍以上大きい材料からなる石英系ガラス導波路がシリコン基板上に構成される光干渉計において、
前記光干渉計が2つの50%方向性結合器とそれらを結ぶ互いに長さの異なる2本の導波路からなるマッハツェンダ光干渉計であり、
前記2本の光導波路のコア幅が、少なくとも一部において互いに異なることにより、前記2本の光導波路のそれぞれについて、コアおよびクラッドの材料に依存する応力誘起複屈折を制御すること、
前記2本の光導波路のそれぞれにおけるTM光の実効屈折率およびTE光の実効屈折率並びに波長λに基づいて、前記2本の光導波路の長さを、TM光にとっての光路長差がλ/2、TE光にとっての光路長差が0となるように、またはTM光にとっての光路長差が0、TE光にとっての光路長差がλ/2となるように、設定すること
を特徴とする導波路型光干渉計。
