追加の砥石が、実施例2で述べたように製造されたが、異なったゾルーゲルアルミナ砥粒(α- アルミナ、Norton Companyより入手した種結晶入りMCA 砥粒、80グリット)が、実施例2で使用された砥粒混合物の代わりに使用された。実験用結合剤1(方法#1、725℃で製造された)が、実施例1および2 (対照1)で試験された市販対照結合剤と、そして米国特許第5,401,284号明細書に記述され、ゾル- ゲルアルミナ砥粒とともに商業的に用いられている第2の対照結合剤と、研削試験で比較された。砥石は上述のように試験され、表10に示される特性を有していた。
追加の砥石が実施例1で述べたように製造されたが、実験用結合剤1および5を変えて、フリットで製造し、実施例1, 2および3で試験された市販対照結合剤と、そして実施例1および2で述べられた原料物質から製造された実験用結合剤1および5と、研削試験で比較された。砥石は表12に示される特性を有していた。
砥石(29mmx20mmx9.525mm)が、735℃で焼成された実験用結合剤1、および1000℃で焼成された市販対照結合剤2をそれぞれ用いて、実施例1で述べられたように製造されたが、3M Corporation(Minneapolis,MN)で製造され、「321」の商品名で販売されている、種結晶を入れないゾルーゲルMCA 砥粒(100グリット)が、種結晶入りのMCA 砥粒の代わりに使用された。使用された砥粒および砥粒特性は、表14および15に示される。これらの砥石は、ビトリファイド結合剤で100グリットの大きさの「321」砥粒で製造された市販砥石(29mmx20mmx10mm)(対照3)と比較された。

Claims (24)
- MCA(微晶質α−アルミナ)砥粒およびビトリアス(vitreous)結合剤を含有する研磨工具であり、焼成後のビトリアス結合剤は、SiO2 最大約45モル%、Al2 O3 最大約15モル%、B2 O3 約24〜35モル%、およびアルカリ金属酸化物約15〜30モル%を含有し、アルカリ金属酸化物は結合剤基準で少くとも5モル%の酸化リチウムを含み、そしてアルカリ金属酸化物に対するB2 O3 モル比が0.8:1〜1.7:1である、研磨工具。
- 焼成後のビトリアス結合剤が、SiO2 最大40モル%を含有する請求項1記載の研磨工具。
- 焼成後のビトリアス結合剤が、アルカリ土類金属酸化物を含み、アルカリ金属酸化物およびアルカリ土類金属酸化物の合計含有量に対するSiO2 モル比が少くとも1.15:1.0である請求項2記載の研磨工具。
- アルカリ金属酸化物が、酸化ナトリウム、酸化リチウムからなる群より選ばれ、焼成後のビトリアス結合剤は酸化リチウム7〜11モル%を含む請求項1記載の研磨工具。
- ビトリアス結合剤が600〜875℃で焼成される請求項1記載の研磨工具。
- ビトリアス結合剤が700〜800℃で焼成される研磨工具。
- 工具がビトリファイド結合剤3〜25容量%およびMCA砥粒10〜56容量%を含む請求項1記載の研磨工具。
- 工具が、さらに第2砥粒、充てん剤および付加剤から選ばれる付加成分約0.1〜60容量%を含む請求項7記載の研磨工具。
- 工具が、合計34〜56容量%の砥粒を含む請求項8記載の研磨工具。
- MCA砥粒が、種結晶を入れたゾル−ゲル法で製造されたα−アルミナ微結晶より本質的になる請求項1記載の研磨工具。
- MCA砥粒が、種結晶を入れていないゾル−ゲル法で製造されたα−アルミナ微結晶より本質的になる請求項1記載の研磨工具。
- 焼成後のビトリアス結合剤が、さらに、TiO2 ,ZnO,ZrO2 ,CaO,MgO,CoO,MnO2 ,BaO,Bi2 O3 ,P2 O5 およびFe2 O3 、ならびにそれらの組合わせからなる群より選ばれる少くとも1つの酸化物約0.5モル%未満を含有する請求項1記載の研磨工具。
- 研磨・研削工具を製造するためのビトリアス結合剤であり、焼成後に、SiO2 約45モル%未満、Al2 O3 最大約15モル%、B2 O3 約24〜35モル%、アルカリ金属酸化物約15〜30モル%を含有し、アルカリ金属酸化物は、結合剤基準で酸化リチウムを少くとも5モル%含有し、そして、アルカリ金属酸化物に対するB2 O3 のモル比が、0.8:1〜1.7:1であるビトリアス結合剤。
- 焼成後のビトリアス結合剤が最大40モル%のSiO2 を含有する請求項13記載の研磨工具。
- 焼成後のビトリアス結合剤が、アルカリ土類金属酸化物を含み、アルカリ金属酸化物およびアルカリ土類金属酸化物の合計含有量に対するSiO2 モル比が少くとも1.15:1.0である請求項14記載の研磨工具。
- アルカリ金属酸化物が酸化ナトリウムおよび酸化リチウムからなる群より選ばれ、焼成後のビトリアス結合剤は酸化リチウム7〜11モル%を含む請求項14記載の研磨工具。
- ビトリアス結合剤が600〜875℃で焼成される請求項14記載の研磨工具。
- ビトリアス結合剤が700〜800℃で焼成される請求項17記載の研磨工具。
- 次の工程:
a)砥粒約70〜95質量%および結合剤混合物約5〜30質量%を混合して混合物を形成すること、ここで、結合剤混合物は、焼成後に、SiO2 約45モル%未満、Al2 O3 最大約15モル%、B2 O3 約24〜35モル%、アルカリ金属酸化物約15〜30モル%を含有し、アルカリ金属酸化物は、結合剤基準で少くとも5モル%の酸化リチウムを含み、アルカリ金属酸化物に対するB2 O3 モル比は、0.8:1〜1.7:1であること、
b)混合物を成形して生コンポジットとすること、および
c)875℃未満の温度で生コンポジットを焼成して研磨工具を生成させること、
を含む研磨工具の製造方法。 - 生コンポジットが約775℃未満の温度で焼成される請求項19記載の方法。
- 研磨工具が砥石である請求項19記載の方法。
- 砥粒がゾル−ゲルアルミナ砥粒を含む請求項19記載の方法。
- 砥粒が、ダイアモンド、立方晶窒化ホウ素、およびそれらの混合物からなる群より選ばれる超砥粒を含む請求項19記載の方法。
- 焼成工程が、酸化雰囲気下に実行される請求項19記載の方法。
