Abstract
【解決手段】偏光子20Aの裏面に偏光制御素子36を備える。偏光制御素子36の透過軸bは、駆動回路40(図1,図5参照)からの制御信号に応じて、黒表示の画素位置に対応する部位において偏光子20Aの透過軸cと交差(直交)する方向を向き、白表示の画素位置に対応する部位において偏光子20Aの透過軸cと平行となる方向を向く。

Description
図1は、本発明の第1の実施の形態に係る表示装置1の概略構成の一例を表したものである。この表示装置1は、液晶表示パネル10(表示パネル)と、この液晶表示パネル10を挟む偏光子20A(第1偏光子)および偏光子20B(第2偏光子)と、偏光子20Bの背後に配置された照明装置30と、液晶表示パネル10を駆動して映像を表示させる駆動回路40とを備えており、偏光子20Aの表面が観察者(図示せず)側に向けられている。
図9は、本発明の第2の実施の形態に係る表示装置2の概略構成の一例を表したものである。この表示装置2は、上記実施の形態の偏光制御素子36の代わりに偏光制御素子61を有する照明装置60を備えている点で、上記実施の形態の表示装置1の構成と相違する。そこで、以下では、上記実施の形態との相違点について主に説明し、上記実施の形態との共通点についての説明を適宜省略するものとする。
次に、本発明の実施例1,2について、比較例1,2と対比して説明する。実施例1の表示装置は、上記第1の実施の形態に係る表示装置1の一具体例に対応しており、ソニー株式会社製の40インチ液晶テレビ「ブラビア2500」(ブラビアはソニー株式会社の登録商標)において、液晶パネルと反射型偏光素子の間に、5インチのTN型液晶パネルを偏光制御素子として画面中央に設置したものである。実施例1において、反射型偏光子の透過軸と、制御信号が印加されていない時の偏光制御素子(TN型液晶パネル)偏光軸と、液晶表示パネルの裏面側の偏光子の透過軸とを互いに平行にしておいた。実施例2の表示装置は、上記第2の実施の形態に係る表示装置2の一具体例に対応しており、実施例1の表示装置におけるTN型液晶パネルの代わりに、日本板硝子ウムプロダクツ株式会社製の「ウムフィルム」(ウムフィルムは日本板硝子ウムプロダクツ株式会社の登録商標)を偏光制御素子として設置したものである。比較例1の表示装置は、実施例1の表示装置においてTN型液晶パネルをなくしたものである。比較例2の表示装置は、実施例1の表示装置においてTN型液晶パネルの両面に、透過軸が互いに直交する2枚の偏光子を1枚ずつ設けたものである。

前記偏光制御素子の透過光の偏光軸が、黒表示の画素位置に対応する部位において前記第1偏光子の透過軸と交差する方向を向き、白表示の画素位置に対応する部位において前記第1偏光子の透過軸と平行となる方向を向くように前記偏光制御素子の透過軸の向きを制御する制御信号を出力する制御部と
を備えた表示装置。 - 前記第1偏光子の透過軸は、前記第3偏光子の透過軸と平行となっており、
前記偏光制御素子は、前記制御信号が印加されていない時に前記偏光制御素子の透過光の偏光軸が前記第1偏光子の透過軸と平行となり、前記制御信号が印加されている時に前記偏光制御素子の透過光の偏光軸が前記第1偏光子の透過軸と交差するように構成されている請求項1に記載の表示装置。 - 前記第1偏光子の透過軸は、前記第3偏光子の透過軸と交差しており、
前記偏光制御素子は、前記制御信号が印加されていない時に前記偏光制御素子の透過光の偏光軸が前記第1偏光子の透過軸と交差し、前記制御信号が印加されている時に前記偏光制御素子の透過光の偏光軸が前記第1偏光子の透過軸と平行となるように構成されている請求項1に記載の表示装置。 - 前記第3偏光子は反射型偏光素子である請求項1に記載の表示装置。
- 前記第1偏光子は反射型偏光素子である請求項1に記載の表示装置。
- 前記第1偏光子と前記偏光制御素子との間に反射型偏光素子を備える請求項1に記載の表示装置。
- 前記反射型偏光素子の透過軸は、前記第1偏光子の透過軸と平行となっている請求項6に記載の表示装置。
- 前記偏光制御素子は、離間して互いに対向配置された一対の透明基板と、前記一対の透明基板の対向面にそれぞれ設けられた一対の透明電極と、前記一対の透明基板の間隙に設けられた液晶層とを有する請求項1に記載の表示装置。
- 前記一対の透明電極のうち少なくとも一方は、前記表示パネルの画素ピッチよりも広いピッチでマトリクス状に配置された複数の画素電極を有する請求項8に記載の表示装置。
- 前記面発光源はエッジライト型である請求項1に記載の表示装置。
- 前記面発光源は直下型である請求項1に記載の表示装置。
- マトリクス状に配置された複数の画素を有すると共に、前記複数の画素が画像信号に基づいて駆動される表示パネルと、
前記表示パネルの一の面側に設けられた第1偏光子と、
前記表示パネルの他の面側に設けられた第2偏光子と、
前記第1偏光子側から前記表示パネルを照明する面発光源と、
前記第1偏光子と前記面発光源との間に設けられた第3偏光子と、
前記第1偏光子と前記第3偏光子との間に設けられ、制御信号に応じて前記第3偏光子の透過光を散乱または透過する偏光制御素子と、
前記第3偏光子の透過光を黒表示の画素位置に対応する部位において散乱し、白表示の画素位置に対応する部位において透過させるように前記偏光制御素子を制御する制御信号を出力する制御部と
を備えた表示装置。 - 前記第1偏光子の透過軸は、前記第3偏光子の透過軸と平行となっており、
前記偏光制御素子は、前記制御信号が印加されていない時に、前記第3偏光子の透過光を散乱し、前記制御信号が印加されている時に、前記第3偏光子の透過光を、偏光軸を変化させずに透過させる請求項12に記載の表示装置。 - 前記偏光制御素子は、離間して互いに対向配置された一対の透明基板と、前記一対の透明基板の対向面にそれぞれ設けられた一対の透明電極と、前記一対の透明基板の間隙に設けられた液晶層とを有し、
前記液晶層は高分子と液晶を含んだ複合層となっており、前記複合層内の液晶部分が微粒子状となっている請求項12に記載の表示装置。 - 前記複数の微粒子は、前記制御信号が印加されていない時に、当該微粒子の、前記液晶層の厚さ方向の屈折率が前記バルクの、前記液晶層の厚さ方向の屈折率とは異なる値となり、前記制御信号が印加されている時に、当該微粒子の、前記液晶層の厚さ方向の屈折率が前記バルクの、前記液晶層の厚さ方向の屈折率と等しい値となるように構成されている請求項14に記載の表示装置。
