Abstract
【解決手段】 液晶性二色性色素を用いて形成された配向層を有する偏光子であって、液晶性二色性色素は、示差走査熱量の測定における降温過程において、結晶転移ピークが見られない偏光子と、輝度向上フィルムとを積層していることを特徴とする高輝度偏光板。

Description
(a)X線反射測定において少なくとも一つ以上の回折ピークが得られること
(b)X線反射率測定においてブラッグピークが得られること、を有することが好ましい。
示差走査熱量計(セイコーインスツルメンツ製220CU)を用いた。窒素雰囲気下(30ml/min)にて、冷却速度10℃/minでの220℃から0℃までの降温過程における示差走査熱量を測定した。なお、試料はアルミニウム製オープン容器に3.1mg秤量し、リファレンスとしてアルミニウム製プレート3枚(約15mg)を用いた。
(液晶性二色性色素)
液晶性二色性色素として、LSR−406(三菱化学(株)製)を用いた。
昇温時の相転移温度(℃)は、Cr 110 N 207 I、であった。
降温時の相転移温度(℃)は、Cr <45 N 201 I、であった。
当該液晶性二色性色素の降温過程における示差走査熱量を図1に示す。図1に示すように、188.6℃において等方相から液晶相への転移ピークは認められたが、液晶相から結晶相への結晶転移ピークは検出されなかった。
LSR−406を1,1,2,2−テトラクロロエタンに溶解して濃度3重量%の溶液とした。当該溶液を、基材(トリアセチルセルロースフィルム)上に設けたポリビニルアルコールのラビング配向膜に2000rpm2sec.で、乾燥膜厚が0.3μmとなるようにスピンコートした。次いで、130℃で2分間加熱して配向させた後、10℃/秒で冷却して配向を固定して偏光子を得た。
得られた偏光子について、X線反射(X線回折)測定およびX線反射率測定を行なった。
(液晶性二色性色素)
液晶性二色性色素として、LSR−516(三菱化学(株)製)を用いた。
昇温時の相転移温度(℃)は、Cr 143 N 214 I、であった。
降温時の相転移温度(℃)は、Cr 73 N、であった。
製造例1において、LSR−406の代わりにLSR−516を使用し、加熱温度を163℃としたこと以外は製造例1と同様にして偏光子を得た。
得られた偏光子について、製造例1と同様に、X線反射(X線回折)測定およびX線反射率測定を行なった。その結果、X線反射(X線回折)測定の回折ピークは認められず、またX線反射率測定においてブラッグピークは認められなかった。得られた最大吸収波長λmax =450nmにおけるサンプルの二色比(DR)=11であった。偏光子としての特性は、λmax において単体透過率38%、偏光度94%であった。

(高輝度偏光板)
上記輝度向上フィルムの1/4波長板側に、製造例1、比較製造例1で得られた偏光子の基材側を、アクリル系粘着剤を介して積層し、高輝度偏光板(厚さ110μm)を得た。
(高輝度偏光板)
上記輝度向上フィルムの1/4波長板側に、従来のヨウ素−ポリビニルアルコール系偏光板(偏光子と保護フィルムを含めての厚さ180μm)を、アクリル系粘着剤を介して積層し、高輝度偏光板(厚さ290μm)を得た。得られた高輝度偏光板は、実施例1に比べて非常に厚く、また輝度は実施例1と同等であった。
Claims (4)
- 液晶性二色性色素を用いて形成された配向層を有する偏光子であって、液晶性二色性色素は、示差走査熱量の測定における降温過程において、結晶転移ピークが見られない偏光子と、輝度向上フィルムとを積層していることを特徴とする高輝度偏光板。
- 偏光子が、下記(a)および/または(b)の特性を有する請求項1記載の高輝度偏光板。
(a)X線反射測定において少なくとも一つ以上の回折ピークが得られること
(b)X線反射率測定においてブラッグピークが得られること - 液晶性二色性色素が、ヘキサチック相またはクリスタル相として配向していることを特徴とする請求項1または2記載の高輝度偏光板。
- 請求項1〜3のいずれかに記載の高輝度偏光板が用いられていることを特徴とする画像表示装置。
