Abstract
【解決手段】本発明のポーリング用ガラス組成物は、酸化物に換算して0.001〜0.5モル%の1価金属と0.1〜40モル%のAl2O3を含有し、Al2O3のモル数と前記1価金属の酸化物の合計モル数との比が1.0以上であるガラス組成物とする。1価金属としては、Li、Na、K、Cs、Ag、Cu、Auのいずれか1種以上が添加されていることが好ましい。

【発明の属する技術分野】
本発明は、光通信分野等で使用される非線形光学素子を形成するのに利用されるポーリング技術に関し、とくにポーリング用に適したガラス組成物に関する。

【従来の技術】
2次の非線形光学効果による第2高調波発生が、誘電体材料中に周期的な分極構造を導入することにより実現できることが知られている。従来の誘電体結晶を用いる場合に比べて、正確な位相整合のための操作が必要でなく、使用する材料に特定の結晶構造が要求されないなどの利点があるため注目されてきた。分極構造を作り込みは、誘電体材料に高電圧を印加するなどの手段で分極処理を行うと半永久的な分極が生じる(ポーリング効果)ので、これを利用することができる。その中で、ガラス等を加熱しながら高電圧を印加する熱ポーリングは、もっとも簡便であり、ポーリング効果の持続性も良く有望な方法である。

特に光通信用光ファイバとして用いられるシリカガラスについて、従来多くのポーリングの研究が行なわれてきた。シリカガラスのポーリングの源は、不純物として含有されるナトリウムイオンの電場下での移動によっていることが明らかにされている(非特許文献1参照)。ナトリウムイオンが移動することによりナトリウムイオン濃度が減った空乏層がガラス中に形成され、ここに内部電界が発生して非線形光学効果を生じるとの認識が確立している。

また、ポーリング方法については、溶融シリカガラスを熱ポーリングすることにより大きな二次非線形光学効果を得る方法が開示されるなど(例えば、特許文献1参照)、その効果を増大させるための検討が具体的なデバイス形成も含めて行われてきた。特許文献2には、シリカガラスの光ファイバにおいて、大きな電気光学効果を生み出すための方法が開示されており、特に熱ポーリングを450℃以上の高温下で行うこと、および800V/μm以上の大きな電場を印加することが有効であることが示されている。

【発明が解決しようとする課題】
しかしながら、従来の技術においてはシリカガラス中に不純物として含まれているナトリウムイオンを利用しているに過ぎず、ポーリング効果を生じさせるのに適した材料の創製については積極的な検討が十分なされていない。
本発明は、かかる問題点を解決するべくなされたものであって、ポーリング効果を生じさせるのに適したガラス材料を創製し、そのガラス組成を提供することを目的とする。

【課題を解決するための手段】
本発明のポーリング用ガラス組成物は、酸化物に換算して0.001〜0.5モル%の1価金属と0.1〜40モル%のAl2O3を含有し、Al2O3のモル数と前記1価金属の酸化物の合計モル数との比が1.0以上であるガラス組成物とする。
1価金属はイオン化して1価イオンとなり、ガラスに電圧が印加された際、その電場方向に移動し、ガラス中に空乏層を形成する効果を有する。また、Alがイオン化して1価金属イオンとともにガラス中に存在すると、1価イオンの移動の活性化エネルギーが低下し、また移動後のイオンが電子と再結合して中性化されるのを抑制する効果がある。

上記の条件を満たす好ましいガラス組成の範囲はつぎのように示される。
酸化物に換算した1価金属 0.001〜0.5モル%
Al2O3 0.1〜40モル%
SiO2 50〜97モル%
B2O3 0〜15モル%
MgO 0〜25モル%
CaO 0〜25モル%
SrO 0〜25モル%
BaO 0〜25モル%
ZnO 0〜25モル%
ただし、上記のMgO、CaO、SrO、BaO、ZnOの含有量の総和(MgO+CaO+SrO+BaO+ZnO)は0〜25モル%の範囲とする。
上記の組成範囲を採用することにより、ガラス材料が容易にかつ安定に得られる。
さらに、1価イオンとなる金属としては、Li、Na、K、Cs、Ag、Cu、Auのいずれか1種以上が添加されていることが好ましい。

以上により、ポーリング用として優れた性質を有するガラス組成物を提供することができる。

【発明の実施の形態】
以下に本発明の実施の形態について説明する。
ガラス材料においてポーリング効果により分極構造を有効に形成させるためには、つぎのような条件を備えることが必要である。第一に、材料中に荷電粒子の源となる元素が含有されている必要がある。第二に上記の荷電粒子となる元素が高温、高電界などの特定条件下でガラス材料中を移動でき、室温に放置された状態では移動しない必要がある。第三に移動した荷電粒子は移動後も電荷を失わず、その荷電状態を維持することが必要である。もちろんこれらの条件を満たしつつ、ガラス材料として安定であることが必要で、光学素子として使用するためには失透や分相を生じてはならない。

第一の条件を満たすために、本発明では、ガラス材料中で容易にイオン化する元素を選択する。1価イオンとなるアルカリ金属等が適している。

第二の条件を満たすためには、ガラス網目構造中を移動しやすい必要があり、イオン半径が小さい、すなわち原子量の小さい元素が望ましい。アルカリ金属ではLiなどが挙げられる。また、ガラス中のイオン移動は一般に活性化エネルギーをもち、温度上昇とともに指数関数的にイオン移動は容易となる。したがってこの活性化エネルギーを適当に選ぶことにより、高温ではイオンが移動しやすく分極が生じやすい、すなわちポーリングが容易で、かつ室温付近では分極状態が安定に保持できるようにすることができる。この活性エネルギーは移動するイオンとガラスの構造や構成元素の影響を受けるので、ガラス組成によってある程度、制御ができる。

第三の条件のためには、1価の正イオンの場合、解離した電子をイオンから引き離し、再中性化を防ぐような構造が作りだせることが望ましい。Alイオンは1価イオンとともにガラス中に存在すると、3価4配位の構造をとり、1価イオンから解離した電子を強く引きつける。これにより電場印加の際の1価イオン移動の活性化エネルギーが適度なものとなり、また移動後のイオンの中性化を防ぐ効果が得られる。

上記の考え方をもとに本発明がなされた。以下、その実施例を示す。
(実施例1)
実施例1として、SiO2:68.7%、Al2O3:15.6%、MgO:0.5%、ZnO:15.3%、Li2O:0.07%(ただし、Li2O以外の成分で合計100%であり、Li2Oは外割とする)のガラスを作製した。作製方法を以下に示す。

二酸化けい素、酸化アルミナ、炭酸マグネシウム、酸化亜鉛、炭酸ナトリウムを原料とし、ガラスの重量で300gになるように各原料を秤量し、十分混合した。このバッチを白金ロジウム製(Pt90%、Rh10%)るつぼに入れ、電気炉において1620℃、6時間溶融した。その後、融液をステンレス板上に流し出し急冷することによってガラス体を得た。ガラス体は電気炉において徐冷した。徐冷後のガラスを切断、研磨し20mm×30mm×1mmの試料を得た。

この試料の20mm×30mmの各々の面に対向するようにAl電極を蒸着法により形成し、ポーリングの際の陰極、陽極とした。ポーリングはガラス試料を電気炉に入れ、室温から350℃まで昇温し、その温度に保持した状態で5kVの電圧を印加し始め、30分後に高温を開始し、50℃以下になった段階で電圧印加を終了した。

このポーリングした試料につき、1064nmの励起光により、メーカーフリンジ法を用いて第二高調波である532nmの光の強度(SHG強度)を測定したところ、標準的な条件でポーリングされたシリカガラス(Heraus社製Herasil)の3.1倍の強度が得られた。

(実施例2〜12)
実施例1と同様にして、組成の異なるガラス試料(表1,実施例2〜12参照)を作製した。実施例2〜4は実施例1と同組成で1価金属のみ異なる試料である。実施例5〜10は実施例1〜4とMgOの含有量が異なる組成で、やはり1価金属のみを種々変えた試料である。実施例11、12はB2O3を含み、1価金属としてNaの濃度を変えた試料である。それぞれ実施例1と同条件でポーリングを行い、それらのSHG強度を測定した。ガラス組成、ポーリング条件、SHG強度は表1およびに示した。これらの組成のガラスは、いずれもシリカガラスを上回るSHG強度が得られている。

(比較例1〜3)
実施例1と同様にして、表2に示したガラス組成の試料を作製した。比較例1は1価金属が0.5モル%を越える試料であり、比較例2はB2O3の濃度が15モル%を越える試料である。比較例3はAl2O3を含まず、1価金属の濃度が高い試料である。これらも実施例1と同条件でポーリングを行い、SHG強度を測定した。これらの組成では、得られるSHG強度は小さい。

上記の実施例、比較例から本発明における好ましい組成の範囲は以下の通りである。ただし、組成はモル%、および成分間の比率はモル比である。

SiO2はガラスの網目形成成分であり、含有量が大きいほどガラスの耐久性が向上するが、多過ぎると溶融が困難になるため、97%を上限とする。

B2O3もガラスの網目形成成分であり、適度な含有量により耐久性を維持しつつ、溶融温度を低下させることができる。また1価イオンと結びつきやすくそれを安定化する作用を持つ。多過ぎると分相、失透が生じるため、上限を15%とする。

Al2O3は、前述の通り1価金属イオンを安定化する作用を持ち、空乏層形成を効果的なものとする。含有量が少ないとこの効果が小さく、多過ぎるとガラス作製時に失透を生じやすくなるため0.1〜40%の範囲とする。なお、Al2O3のモル数と1価イオンの酸化物の合計モル数との比が1.0以上、すなわち、Al2O3のモル数を1価金属イオンの酸化物の合計モル数と等しいかそれ以上にしておくと、1価イオンを安定化するのに有効である。

アルカリ土類金属の酸化物であるMgO、CaO、SrO、BaOは、適度に加えることによってガラスの溶融性、安定性を向上させるが、多過ぎると分相、失透を生じるようになる。各酸化物とも0〜25%の範囲であることが好ましい。Znもアルカリ土類イオンと同様2価イオンであり、同様にZnOとして0〜25%の範囲であることが好ましい。またこれらの2価イオンの酸化物すべての合計も0〜25%の範囲であることが好ましい。

本発明において含有させる1価イオンは、アルカリ金属イオンであるLi、Na、K、Cs、およびAg、Cu、Auの金属イオンのいずれか1種以上であることが好ましい。これらのイオンはイオン半径が小さいほど移動度が大きく、電圧印加の際イオンが動きやすい。これらのイオン種の選択により、他の制約に合わせてポーリングの条件に自由度を持たせることができる。また例えばSiO2含有量が大きく粘性の高いガラスにおいては、上記範囲のように少量の1価イオンでもガラス溶融時の粘性を顕著に下げることができる場合がある。さらに、これらの1価イオンを複数選択した場合には、いわゆる混合アルカリ効果に代表される1価イオンの混合効果が起こるため、電気抵抗、ガラスの粘性の調整に用いることができる。
Ag、Cu、Auのアルカリ金属イオンに比べると分極しやすいイオンであるため、その点でポーリングの効果を高め、非線形光学効果を大きくするのに有利である。

【発明の効果】
以上のように本発明のガラス組成物を用いることにより、ガラス材料中に周期的な分極構造を安定に導入できる。これにより、ガラスを用いた第2高調波発生素子を提供することができる。
Claims (3)
- 酸化物に換算して0.001〜0.5モル%の1価金属と0.1〜40モル%のAl2O3を含有し、Al2O3のモル数と前記1価金属の酸化物の合計モル数との比が1.0以上であることを特徴とするポーリング用ガラス組成物。
- つぎの成分をつぎの組成範囲で含有することを特徴とする請求項1に記載のポーリング用ガラス組成物。
酸化物に換算した1価金属 0.001〜0.5モル%
Al2O3 0.1〜40モル%
SiO2 50〜97モル%
B2O3 0〜15モル%
MgO 0〜25モル%
CaO 0〜25モル%
SrO 0〜25モル%
BaO 0〜25モル%
ZnO 0〜25モル%
ただし、
MgO+CaO+SrO+BaO+ZnO 0〜25モル% - 前記1価金属がLi、Na、K、Cs、Ag、Cu、Auのいずれか1種以上であることを特徴とする請求項1または2に記載のポーリング用ガラス組成物。
