Description
スメクチック、フェロエレクトリックなどである装置毎に区別される。本発明の
好ましい適用例であるネマチックディスプレイでは、非キラルであるか、例えば
キラルドーパントを加えることでキラル化された、ネマチック液晶が用いられる
。これは自然に均等なまたは軽くねじれたテクスチャーを生じ、そのらせんピッ
チは数マイクロメーターより大きい。表面近くにおける液晶の配向およびアンカ
ーリングは、基板に適用されたアライメント層または処理により規定される。
では、1つのテクスチャーのみが装置で得られる。このテクスチャーはセルの全
エネルギーにおける絶対最小に相当する。電場下でテクスチャーは絶えず変化し
て、その光学的性質は適用電圧の関数として変わる。電場が遮断されると、ネマ
チック結晶はその一つの単安定性テクスチャーに戻る。当業者であれば、これら
のシステムには、ネマチックディスプレイで最も広範囲に用いられる操作方式:
ねじれネマチック(TN)、超ねじれネマチック(STN)、電気制御複屈折(
ECB)、垂直整列ネマチック(VAN)などがある、とわかるであろう。

様のアンカーリングを用いると、電場の不在下で安定または準安定な少くとも2
つの異なるテクスチャーがセルで達成しうる。“双安定性”または“マルチ安定
性”という用語は、いかなる外部コマンドもなければほぼ無限に続くらしい、同
様のエネルギーまたは非常に類似するエネルギーを有した、少くとも2つの状態
を表わすために通常用いられる。逆に、“準安定性”という用語は、長い緩和時
間後に切り換わるらしい、異なるエネルギーレベルを有した状態について用いら
れる。2状態間の切換えは、適切な電気シグナルを適用することで行われる。一
旦ある状態が形成されると、結晶は双安定性であることから、電場がないかぎり
そのままである。双安定性ディスプレイのこの記憶は、多くの適用例で非常に魅
力的である。第一に、ポータブル機器でエネルギー消費を減らせることから最も
有利な、ゆっくりした速度で、像を新たにすることができる。第二に、速い適用
例(例えば、ビデオ)では、記憶は非常に高い多様な速度を可能にするため、高
解像度画像をディスプレイしうる。
双安定性ディスプレイ〔文献1〕が提案された。2つの双安定性テクスチャーU
(均等または軽くねじれている)およびTは±180°にねじれることで互いに
異なっており、それらは位相的に不適合である(図1)。ネマチックの自然ピッ
チp0はセルの厚さdの4倍近く(p0≒4d)となるように選択されるため、
UおよびTエネルギーは実質的に等しい。電場がなければ、他の低エネルギー状
態は存在しない:UおよびTはもちろん双安定性である。

して最良値の半分である。

程度まで減少しうる。

ようになるが、相シフトδc=2πdcΔnc/λ0が小さいならば(<<1ラ
ジアン)、この望ましくない効果はパラメーターPおよびΔφを最適化すること
により補える。

Claims (18)
- 【請求項1】 a)2枚の並行基板(20、40)の間に挟まれた液晶物質(30)であって
、該液晶へ電場を適用しうるように、前記基板が対向する内表面上に電極を備え
ており、少くともフロント基板(20)およびフロント電極が光学的に透明であ
るもの; b)液晶を配向させて、電場の不在下で安定または準安定な少くとも2つの択
一的な異なるテクスチャーを形成しうる、電極上のアライメント層または処理で
あって、前記テクスチャーのうち一方がねじれていないか、または−90°〜+
90°範囲の全角でねじれており、他方のテクスチャーは180°に近い角度で
追加ねじれを呈するもの; c)製品d・Δnがλ0/4に近づくように選択される、液晶層(30)の厚
さd(ただし、λ0はディスプレイの作働スペクトル帯の中心波長であり、Δn
は該波長における液晶の複屈折率差である); d)2枚の基板のうち少くとも一方でアンカーリングを壊すことにより、上記
の異なるテクスチャー間で切り換えることができ、電場が除かれた後も結晶をい
ずれかのテクスチャーに保持することができる、電気シグナルを液晶に印可する
手段; e)装置の前面に備えられ、その内側または外側に置かれた、装置の前面で液
晶のディレクターに対して15〜75°の角度に配向された偏光子(10);お
よび f)装置の内側または外側で、液晶の背面に置かれて、光を装置へ2回通して
から、観察者または追加光学素子の方向へ戻すことができる、正反射または拡散
反射素子(50) により特徴づけられる、反射双安定性ディスプレイ装置。 - 【請求項2】 液晶物質(30)が、ネマチック相で液晶または液晶混合物を含んでなる、請
求項1に記載の装置。 - 【請求項3】 液晶物質(30)が、安定または準安定テクスチャーのうちあるテクスチャー
のエネルギーを互いに近づけるかまたは等しくするためにキラル物質でドープさ
れた、コレステリックまたはネマチック相で液晶または液晶混合物を含んでなる
、請求項1に記載の装置。 - 【請求項4】 液晶(30)の光学的遅れd・Δnが、0.15λ0〜0.35λ0、好まし
くは0.20λ0〜0.32λ0の範囲である(ただし、λ0は作働スペクトル
帯の中心波長である)、請求項1〜3のいずれか一項に記載の装置。 - 【請求項5】 偏光子(10)が直線的偏光子または楕円形偏光子である、請求項1〜4のい
ずれか一項に記載の装置。 - 【請求項6】 補償板(60)が装置の内側または外側で偏光子(10)とリフレクター(5
0)との間の光路に導入されて、λ0/12未満の光学的遅れΔIを呈する(た
だし、λ0が作働スペクトル帯の中心波長である)、請求項1〜5のいずれか一
項に記載の装置。 - 【請求項7】 電極のうち少くとも1つが、同一基板および同一装置に複数の独立画素を作製
しうる、複数の異なるセグメントを含んでいる、請求項1〜6のいずれか一項に
記載の装置。 - 【請求項8】 独立画素が、電場を適用するための独立手段を備えている、請求項1〜7のい
ずれか一項に記載の装置。 - 【請求項9】 独立画素が、複合的な受動マトリックスで編成されている、請求項1〜8のい
ずれか一項に記載の装置。 - 【請求項10】 独立画素が、複合的な能動マトリックスで編成されている、請求項1〜8のい
ずれか一項に記載の装置。 - 【請求項11】 偏光子(10)が、装置の前面で、液晶のディレクターに対して45°近くの
角度に配向されている、請求項1〜10のいずれか一項に記載の装置。 - 【請求項12】 第一テクスチャーのねじれ角が事実上ゼロ(Δφ≒0)である、請求項11に
記載の装置。 - 【請求項13】 低ねじれ状態におけるテクスチャーのねじれ角(Δφ0)、2つの状態間にお
ける相対的ねじれ(±180°)、前面(20)における液晶(30)のアライ
メントに対する偏光子(10)の配向(P)、2枚の基板(20、40)間に置
かれた液晶物質(30)の厚さ(d)、および液晶の複屈折率差(Δn)が、特
にコントラスト、明るさおよび色に関して、最良の光学性能を得られるように最
適化されている、請求項1〜12のいずれか一項に記載の装置。 - 【請求項14】 補償板(60)の光学軸(62)が、偏光子(10)に対して実質的に45°
で配向されている、請求項1〜13のいずれか一項に記載の装置。 - 【請求項15】 液晶(30)が100〜180nmの範囲で光学的遅れを導入する、請求項6
との組合せにおける、請求項1〜14のいずれか一項に記載の装置。 - 【請求項16】 補償板(60)が50nm未満の光学的遅れを導入する、請求項6との組合せ
における、請求項1〜15のいずれか一項に記載の装置。 - 【請求項17】 偏光子(10)が、電気偏光子を構成するように、単一素子の形で補償板(6
0)と組み合わされている、請求項6との組合せにおける、請求項1〜16のい
ずれか一項に記載の装置。 - 【請求項18】 液晶物質(30)の厚さが6μm未満である、請求項1〜17のいずれか一項
