Description
本発明は液晶ディスプレイ装置の分野に関する。
【技術水準】
用いられる液晶の物理的性質に応じて、液晶がネマチック、コレステリック、スメクチック、フェロエレクトリックなどである装置毎に区別される。本発明の好ましい適用例であるネマチックディスプレイでは、非キラルであるか、例えばキラルドーパントを加えることでキラル化された、ネマチック液晶が用いられる。これは自然に均等なまたは軽くねじれたテクスチャーを生じ、そのらせんピッチは数マイクロメーターより大きい。表面近くにおける液晶の配向およびアンカーリングは、基板に適用されたアライメント層または処理により規定される。

過去に提案または作製されたほとんどの装置は単安定性である。電場の不在下では、1つのテクスチャーのみが装置で得られる。このテクスチャーはセルの全エネルギーにおける絶対最小に相当する。電場下でテクスチャーは絶えず変化して、その光学的性質は適用電圧の関数として変わる。電場が遮断されると、ネマチック結晶はその一つの単安定性テクスチャーに戻る。当業者であれば、これらのシステムには、ネマチックディスプレイで最も広範囲に用いられる操作方式:ねじれネマチック(TN)、超ねじれネマチック(STN)、電気制御複屈折(ECB)、垂直整列ネマチック(VAN)などがある、とわかるであろう。

もう1つのクラスのネマチックディスプレイは、双安定性、マルチ安定性または準安定性なネマチックの場合である。このような状況下において、表面上で同様のアンカーリングを用いると、電場の不在下で安定または準安定な少くとも2つの異なるテクスチャーがセルで達成しうる。“双安定性”または“マルチ安定性”という用語は、いかなる外部コマンドもなければほぼ無限に続くらしい、同様のエネルギーまたは非常に類似するエネルギーを有した、少くとも2つの状態を表わすために通常用いられる。逆に、“準安定性”という用語は、長い緩和時間後に切り換わるらしい、異なるエネルギーレベルを有した状態について用いられる。2状態間の切換えは、適切な電気シグナルを適用することで行われる。一旦ある状態が形成されると、結晶は双安定性であることから、電場がないかぎりそのままである。双安定性ディスプレイのこの記憶は、多くの適用例で非常に魅力的である。第一に、ポータブル機器でエネルギー消費を減らせることから最も有利な、ゆっくりした速度で、像を新たにすることができる。第二に、速い適用例(例えば、ビデオ)では、記憶は非常に高い多様な速度を可能にするため、高解像度画像をディスプレイしうる。

最近、コレステリックまたはキラル化ネマチックである液晶を用いる、新しい双安定性ディスプレイ〔文献1〕が提案された。2つの双安定性テクスチャーU(均等または軽くねじれている)およびTは±180°にねじれることで互いに異なっており、それらは位相的に不適合である(図1)。ネマチックの自然ピッチp0はセルの厚さdの4倍近く(p0≒4d)となるように選択されるため、UおよびTエネルギーは実質的に等しい。電場がなければ、他の低エネルギー状態は存在しない:UおよびTはもちろん双安定性である。

2つの双安定性テクスチャーの位相的不適合性のために、連続的なバルク歪みを伴わずにあるものから他へと変換することは不可能である。そのためUおよびT間の切換えには、表面でアンカーリング変化を誘導する際に強い外部電場を要する。限界電場Ec(アンカーリングを壊す閾値)以上でほぼホメオトロピック(homeotropic)なテクスチャー(図1のH参照)が得られ、少くとも一方の基板におけるアンカーリングが壊れて、分子はその表面近くでプレートへ垂直に伸びる。

アンカーリングが壊れた双安定性ディスプレイの光学素子は、単安定性装置の場合と非常に異なる。最初に、作像中の大部分にわたり、ディスプレイの各セル、即ち2つの双安定性状態に相当するものには、2つのテクスチャーのみが存在する。最適な構成であれば、それら2つのテクスチャー間で最大のコントラストを出せねばならず、その一方で、電場下で中間状態を速やかに通り過ぎることで、切換えに際する一過性の光学的影響を最少に抑えられねばならない。更に、2つの双安定性テクスチャー間の主な差異、即ち180°の追加ねじれは、最適化のために利用しうるパラメーターではない:それは2つの双安定性状態を得るために用いられる物理的メカニズムによるものである。加えて、双安定性切換えには(10ボルト/マイクロメーター(V/μm)に近い)強いE>Ecである電場、ひいてはセルの厚さdに比例した制御電圧U=E・dを要する。したがって、妥当な電圧で制御することを可能にするためには、液晶層は非常に薄くなければならず(d≒2〜3μm)、そのため光学的最適化ではこれらの要件を考慮しなければならない。

【発明の概要】
本発明の目的は、既知装置のものよりも良い性質を呈する液晶をベースにした、新規なディスプレイ装置を提案することである。

本発明の関係において、この目的は反射双安定性装置で達成され、下記の事実により特徴づけられる:
a)2枚の並行基板の間に挟まれた液晶物質であって、該液晶へ電場を適用しうるように、前記基板が対向する内表面上に電極を備えており、少くともフロント基板およびフロント電極が光学的に透明であるもの;
b)液晶を配向させて、電場の不在下で安定または準安定な少くとも2つの択一的な異なるテクスチャーを形成しうる、電極上のアライメント層または処理であって、前記そのテクスチャーのうち一方がねじれていないか、または−90°〜+90°範囲の全角でねじれており、他方のテクスチャーは180°に近い角度で追加ねじれを呈するもの;
c)製品d・Δnがλ0/4に近づくように選択される、液晶層の厚さd(ただし、λ0はディスプレイの作働スペクトル帯の中心波長であり、Δnは該波長における液晶の複屈折率差である);
d)2枚の基板のうち少くとも一方でアンカーリングを壊すことにより、上記の異なるテクスチャー間で切り換えることができ、電場が除かれた後も結晶をいずれかのテクスチャーに保持することができる、電気シグナルを液晶に印加するための手段;
e)装置の前面に備えられ、その内側または外側に置かれた、装置の前面で液晶のディレクターに対して15〜75°の角度に配向された偏光子;および
f)装置の内側または外側で、液晶の背面に置かれて、光を装置へ2回通してから、観察者または追加光学素子の方向へ戻すことができる、正反射または拡散反射素子。

このように本発明により提案された反射双安定性ディスプレイは、多くの利点を発揮する。
特に、本発明の反射双安定性ディスプレイは、それを作動させたり(それは双安定性であるため)、それを明るくしたりすることなく(それは内部光源を要しない)、エネルギーを消費しないで、非常に長時間にわたり像を維持および表示することができる。
この反射双安定性装置は、様々なパラメーターを考慮することにより最適化しうる。単一の偏光子で、いくつかの構成を可能とし、白色光で50〜60のコントラストを与える。光学特性を失うことなく、最適化によって、最小のセル厚さの使用が可能となり、それにより切り換え(スイッチング)を非常に速くし、かつ切り換え目的に必要な制御電圧を減小させる。

‐偏光子は直線的偏光子または楕円形偏光子である;
‐補償板は、装置の内側または外側で、偏光子とリフレクターとの間の光路に導入されて、λ0/12未満の光学的遅れΔIを呈する;λ0は作働スペクトル帯の中心波長である;
‐電極のうち少くとも1つは、同一基板および同一装置に複数の独立画素を作製しうる、複数の異なるセグメントを含んでいる;
‐独立画素は、電場を適用するための独立手段を備えている;

‐偏光子は、装置の前面で、液晶のディレクターに対して45°近くの角度に向けられている;

‐低ねじれ状態におけるテクスチャーのねじれ角、2つの状態間における相対的ねじれ、前面における液晶のアライメントに対する偏光子の配向、2枚の基板間に置かれた液晶物質の厚さ、および液晶の複屈折率差は、特にコントラスト、明るさおよび色に関して、最良の光学性能を得られるように最適化されている;

他の反射ディスプレイのように、1または2つの偏光子、1以上の補償板などを有した双安定性装置が、多くの構成で作製しうる。本発明において、その装置は装置の前面で単一の偏光子を光路に置いている。この構成は第二偏光子のおかげで光の損失を最少に抑えることから、それは最大の明るさをもたらすという大きな利点を有している。

本発明による装置で最も簡単な構成では、図2で示されているように、それらの内表面に電極を備える2枚の基板20および40の間に置かれた液晶層30の前面に偏光子10および後面に鏡50を単に有しており、追加の光学素子を備えていない(例えば補償板なし)。

本発明による装置を最適化するため、ディスプレイの光学的性質を定める次のパラメーター:低ねじれ状態Uにあるテクスチャーのねじれ角Δφ0(|Δφ0|≦180°)、第二の双安定性状態Tにある追加±180°ねじれ、前面20における液晶30のアライメントに対する偏光子10の配向P(−90°≦P≦90°)、2枚の基板20および40の間に置かれた液晶物質30の厚さd、および液晶の複屈折率差Δnのすべてを変えることが可能である。
これらのパラメーターは、装置に関して最良の光学的性能、特に最適コントラスト、明るさ、色などを得られるように選択される。

双安定性ディスプレイの具体的特徴は、ほとんどの時間において、2つの状態のみが要されるという事実であり、そのため光学的に最良であることを要するのはこれら2つの状態のみである。

一般的に、偏光子10の任意配向Pについて、複数の解が最良の光学的性能を呈することが示された。これらの解の中から選択すると、例えば層30の厚さdを減らすことにより、光学特性を落とすことなく、液晶の切換えを最良にしうる。

当業者であれば、本発明の関係で示された最適な構成の重要性を理解して、光学特性、速度、制御電圧および2双安定性状態間における装置の切換えを同時に改善しうる。

らせんピッチが光の波長よりもかなり大きい、均等にねじれたテクスチャーの場合、光がらせんの軸と並行して伝えられるときには、良好な概算内でシステムの光学特性について記載した周知の分析式〔文献2〕が存在する。光が(図3で示されたように)装置を双方向に通るという事実を考慮し、偏光子10および鏡50が完全であると仮定すれば、我々はディスプレイの反射率について下記式を得る:

単色光コントラストを最適化するためには、ねじれΔφまたはΔφ±πの双安定性状態のうち一方が黒色(R=0)であることが必要である。偏光子10の各配向について、方程式(1)はこの条件を満たす一連の解(ξk、Δφk)を与える(図4および5)。ξk(P)およびΔφk(P)の第一分岐線(k=0、1、2または3)が図4および5で示されており、そこでは統一上の理由から−45°≦P≦+45°範囲の配向を有する偏光子10およびΔφ<0のセルねじれに図が限定されている。Δφ>0の解は45°≦P≦135°に相当し、下記変換式により同様の図から得られる:

これら解のすべてはλ0=d・Δn/ξkの単色光で無限コントラストに相当する。実際上、ディスプレイは白色光でも良好なコントラストを呈することが要され、即ちλが(一定PおよびΔφで)λk付近で変わるとき、Rはゼロに近いままでなければならない。

図6で示された第一分岐線(ξ0、Δφ0)はこの基準を最も良く満たし、他の分岐線の場合よりもかなり良い白色光コントラストに相当する。以下のように考えられるのは、この解のみである。

図7は、可変λ0/λのとき、一定d、ΔnおよびΔφで計算された第一分岐線の周辺における反射率Rを示している。Pが−10〜+45°(またはΔφ<0ならば45〜100°)のとき、その分岐線の周辺で低い反射率に相当するウィンドーは広く、ほぼPから独立している。この領域は、最良の光学特性(低くて、λにほとんど依存しない平均反射率)を有する白色光で、ディスプレイの黒色状態に相当する。

この構成のとき、黒色状態の最適化には、−10°≦P≦+100°以外では、偏光子10でいかなる特定の配向も要しないことがわかる。したがって、Pを選択する上でこの自由を利用して、所定の光学特性のときには、最少の厚さが切換えの改善上良いことから、液晶層30の厚さdを最適化することが可能である。
図5では、この最少厚さd=λ/(4Δn)がP=45°で得られ、それが+15°<P<+75°範囲でゆっくり変わることが、直接みられる。
この厚さは、2つの偏光子を用いたとき、透過率〔文献1〕または反射率に関して最良値の半分である。

そのため、本発明による装置は、良い光学特性を維持しながら、2の倍率で制御電圧の減少させることを、45°に近いPで可能にする。電場が切られた後における緩和時間は1/4になり、高解像度ビデオディスプレイに適合するミリ秒程度まで減少しうる。

装置の“白色”双安定性状態には高反射率が必要とされ、好ましくはR=1であって、そのとき波長の分散はほとんどない。これら2つの条件は、白色状態にとって最大の明るさおよび良い色を保証する。(すでに最適化された)黒色状態と(なお最適化すべき)白色状態とで唯一の差異は、±180°の追加ねじれである。

図8は、すでに最適化された黒色状態のゼロ分岐線に相当する、“白色”状態の反射率R(P、λ0/λ)を示している。すべての状況下で、Rは1に非常に近く、+15°<P<+75°範囲でλ0/λにほとんど依存しないことがわかる。
これは、P≒±45°、d≒λ0/4・Δn(λ0はディスプレイの通過帯域の中間に近づくように選択される)および低ねじれ状態でΔφ≒0のとき、本発明による双安定性反射ディスプレイにおいて、最良構成の利点を立証している。この構成は2つの双安定性状態の光学性を最良にするのみならず、最少厚さの液晶層30の使用も可能にして、結果的に2状態間の切換えを改善する。

図9は、反射装置の最適構成について、λ/λ0の関数として、P=45°における2状態の反射率を示している。
白色状態またはTテクスチャー(Δφ=180°)の反射率は、λ=λ0付近で非常にゆっくり変わる。逆に、黒色またはUテクスチャー(Δφ=0°)状態は無視しえない分散率R(λ)を有しており、これは白色光でコントラストを減少させて、着色した黒色状態を与える。

図10は、d・Δnの関数として、D65標準源で計算された比色曲線を示している。淡色状態(Δφ=180°)は完全白色に非常に近いが、暗色状態(Δφ=0)は着色している。

図12で示されたような変形例において、本発明で提案された反射双安定性ディスプレイに関する追加の改良点は、装置の内外で偏光子10とリフレクター50との間に挿入された薄い光学厚さの補償板60である。この単一軸補償板60の光学軸62は、偏光子10に対して本質的に45°となるように選択される。

単一の光路で補償板60により生じる光学路長差はdcΔncであり、ここでdcはその厚さであり、Δncはその複屈折率差(正または負)である。相当する角度の相シフトはδc=2πdcΔnc/λ0で規定され、ここでλ0は装置で最適化すべきスペクトル帯の中心における光の波長である。

質的に、小さな相シフトの補償板60の役割は次のとおりである。装置で最適の光学構成は、d・Δn=λ0/4に近いU状態にある光学厚さに相当することが、上で示されている。しかしながら、装置切換えには、ネマチック30の厚さdをできるだけ薄くすることが好ましい。これら2つの条件は、液晶30に起因する相シフトの一部を補償板60で生じる相シフトで置き換えることにより、同時に満たせる:
d′・Δn+δc=λ0/4
ここでd′<λ0/(4・Δn)は小さな方の厚さである。このような状況下で、黒色状態はその光学的性質を保てる。白色状態の比色および明るさはやや劣るようになるが、相シフトδc=2πdcΔnc/λ0が小さいならば(<<1ラジアン)、この望ましくない効果はパラメーターPおよびΔφを最適化することにより補える。

図13および14は、R(Δφ)=0並びにδ=−10°、0°、+10°および+20°で計算された、解ξ(P、δ)およびΔφ(P、δ)の第一分岐線を示している。
図15は、相当するねじれ状態R(Δφ−π)の反射率を示している(同様の結果はΔφ+πで得られる)。
これらの図から、当業者であれば、小さな相シフト(δ≒15°)の導入で液晶層30の厚さを更に減少させうる、と理解するであろう。
大きな相シフトの場合には、淡色状態Δφ±πは次第に明るさを減らして、より強く着色するため、ディスプレイの光学特性を落としてしまう。

図16は、λ0/λの関数としてΔφ=−25.4°、P=30°、δ=15°、λ0=560nm、ξ(λ0)=0.217で計算された、2つの状態ΔφおよびΔφ−πの反射率を示している。この最適化された構成は補償板60なしの場合(δ0=0)に匹敵する光学特性を有しているが、それにもかかわらず約15%薄い液晶層30を用いることができる。

上記の計算では、補償板60の分散dΔnc/dλは液晶30自体のdΔn/dλと類似している、と仮定している。実際上、補償板60の分散に関して適切な(例えば、反対符号の)選択は、追加の利点、特に装置の黒色状態で小さな分散、ひいては白色光で良いコントラストを生じうる。

【具体的態様】
本発明で提案された装置の非制限的態様は、本発明者らにより開発および研究された。その利点を証明するために、アンカーリングを壊すことで作動する双安定性セルと比較し、透過性についてディスプレイで最適化させた。

双方の場合に、表面20、40のうち一方におけるアンカーリングは、約30°の傾斜角で強い(85°でSiOのグレージング(grazing)蒸発)。他の表面では、75°でSiOを蒸発させることにより弱い平面的アンカーリングを形成した。Merckから市販されている5CBネマチックを、S811キラルドーパント(Merck製)を加えることによりキラル化した。双方のセルにおいて、用いられる濃度は最大P0=4・dで自然ピッチを得るように適用した(従来の透過セルではd=1.5μm、本発明による反射セルではd=0.85μm)。

アンカーリングを壊すための静的閾値は、双方のセルで弱いアンカーリングプレートで測定すると、匹敵していた(Ec=7V/μm)。2つの双安定性状態UおよびT間で再現性ある切換えを、双方の装置で同様の電気シグナルを用いて行ったが、電圧は非常に異なっていた:従来の透過セルではU=18V(d=1.5μm)および本発明で提案された反射セルではU=8V(d=0.85μm)。切換え後の光学的緩和時間も、本発明による反射セルで測定すると(τ=2ms)、従来の透過セルの場合(τ=6ms)よりかなり短かった。これらの結果は、本発明で提案された反射構成により生じる大きな実用的利点を立証している。

Claims (18)
- 前面および背面を有する反射双安定性ディスプレイ装置であって、
a)2枚の並行基板(20、40)の間に挟まれたネマチック液晶物質(30)であって、該液晶へ電場を適用しうるように、前記基板が対向する内表面上に電極を備えており、少くともフロント基板(20)およびフロント電極が光学的に透明であるもの;
b)液晶を配向させて、電場の不在下で安定または準安定な少くとも2つの択一的な異なるテクスチャーを形成しうる、電極上のアライメント層であって、第一テクスチャーが−90°〜+90°範囲の低いねじれを有し、かつ、第二テクスチャーが前記第1のテクスチャーよりも更に180°追加の高いねじれを有するアライメント層;
c)d・Δnの値がλ0/4に近づくように選択される、液晶層(30)の厚さd(ただし、λ0はディスプレイの作働スペクトル帯の中心波長であり、Δnは該波長における液晶の複屈折率差である);
d)2枚の基板のうち少くとも一方でアンカーリングを壊すことにより、上記の異なるテクスチャー間で切り換えることができ、電場が除かれた後も液晶をいずれかのテクスチャーに保持することができる、電気シグナルを液晶に印加する手段;
e)前記装置の前記前面に備えられ、偏光子(10)の透過軸が前記装置の前記前面で液晶のディレクターに対して15〜75°の角度になるように配向された偏光子(10);および
f)液晶の背面に置かれて、光を装置へ2回通してから、観察者または追加光学素子の方向へ戻すことができる、正反射または拡散反射素子(50)により特徴づけられる、反射双安定性ディスプレイ装置。 - 液晶物質(30)が、ネマチック相で液晶または液晶混合物を含んでなる、請求項1に記載の装置。
- 液晶物質(30)が、安定または準安定テクスチャーのうちあるテクスチャーのエネルギーを互いに近づけるかまたは等しくするためにキラル物質でドープされた、コレステリックまたはネマチック相で液晶または液晶混合物を含んでなる、請求項1に記載の装置。
- 液晶(30)の光学的遅れd・Δnが、0.15λ0〜0.35λ0、好ましくは0.20λ0〜0.32λ0の範囲である(ただし、λ0は作働スペクトル帯の中心波長である)、請求項1〜3のいずれか一項に記載の装置。
- 偏光子(10)が直線的偏光子または楕円形偏光子である、請求項1〜4のいずれか一項に記載の装置。
- 補償板(60)が偏光子(10)とリフレクター(50)との間の光路に導入されて、λ0/12未満の光学的遅れΔIを呈する(ただし、λ0が作働スペクトル帯の中心波長である)、請求項1〜5のいずれか一項に記載の装置。
- 電極のうち少くとも1つが、同一基板および同一装置に複数の独立画素を作製しうる、複数の異なるセグメントを含んでいる、請求項1〜6のいずれか一項に記載の装置。
- 独立画素が、電場を適用するための独立手段を備えている、請求項1〜7のいずれか一項に記載の装置。
- 独立画素が、複合的な受動マトリックスで編成されている、請求項1〜8のいずれか一項に記載の装置。
- 独立画素が、複合的な能動マトリックスで編成されている、請求項1〜8のいずれか一項に記載の装置。
- 偏光子(10)が、偏光子(10)の透過軸が前記装置の前記前面で液晶のディレクターに対して45°の角度になるように配向されている、請求項1〜10のいずれか一項に記載の装置。
- 第一テクスチャーのねじれ角が事実上ゼロ(Δφ≒0)である、請求項11に記載の装置。
- 低ねじれ状態におけるテクスチャーのねじれ角(Δφ0)、2つの状態間における相対的ねじれ(±180°)、前面(20)における液晶(30)のアライメントに対する偏光子(10)の配向(P)、2枚の基板(20、40)間に置かれた液晶物質(30)の厚さ(d)、および液晶の複屈折率差(Δn)が、特にコントラスト、明るさおよび色に関して、最良の光学性能を得られるように最適化されている、請求項1〜12のいずれか一項に記載の装置。
- 補償板(60)の光学軸(62)が、偏光子(10)の透過軸に対して45°で配向されている、請求項1〜13のいずれか一項に記載の装置。
- 液晶(30)が100〜180nmの範囲で光学的遅れを導入する、請求項6との組合せにおける、請求項1〜14のいずれか一項に記載の装置。
- 補償板(60)が50nm未満の光学的遅れを導入する、請求項6との組合せにおける、請求項1〜15のいずれか一項に記載の装置。
- 偏光子(10)が、楕円偏光子を構成するように、単一素子の形で補償板(60)と組み合わされている、請求項6との組合せにおける、請求項1〜16のいずれか一項に記載の装置。
- 液晶物質(30)の厚さが6μm未満である、請求項1〜17のいずれか一項に記載の装置。
