【発明の詳細な説明】
【０００１】 （技術分野） 本発明は、電子プログラム・ガイド（ＥＰＧ）の広告を受信しかつ表示するこ
とに関する。より特定的には、この発明は、広告情報を変更するためにＥＰＧデ
ータベースに記憶されたデータを利用するシステム及び方法に関する。
【０００２】 （背景技術） その内容がここに参考文献として明白に組込まれた米国特許出願第０９／１２
０，４８８号（弁護人名簿番号３２７１４／ＬＴＲ／Ｅ１９０）は、広告情報を
表示するためのパネル・アド・ウィンドウズ（登録商標）及びチャネル・アド・
タイルズを有する電子プログラム・ガイド（ＥＰＧ）を開示する。一般に、広告
情報は、将来−計画テレビジョン・プログラムに関する。例えば、ＮＢＣは、地
方のＮＢＣチャネルに毎週木曜日の夜に見せるときに、そのショー“フレンズ(F
riends)”のパネル又はタイル広告を提供しうる。
【０００３】 しかしながら、広告のある一定の情報は、広告が送信される毎に変化しうるか

クス）を示しうる。そこで、異なる時間帯のそれぞれに対して、サービス・プロ
バイダは、適切な時間情報を伴う異なる広告を生成しかつ送信しなければならな
い。
【０００４】 上記に加えて、シリーズ番組のエピソードの番組説明(プログラム・ディスク
リプション)は、毎日、毎週、或いは隔週ベースで異なりうる。そのような場合
には、サービス・プロバイダは、番組説明に変更がある場合には毎回最新番組説
明情報を伴う新しい広告を送信しなければならない。また、製品やサービスを促
進（プロモート）するような、他の広告に関する情報の一部は、時間帯、地理的
領域、ユーザの好み、等により変化しうる。従って、製品／サービス広告の場合
には、サービス・プロバイダは、また、価格、電話番号、ウェブ・サイト・アド
レス、プロモーションの日付、等において変化がある毎に最新情報を伴う新しい
広告を送信しなければならない。
【０００５】 限定商品(limited commodity)である垂直帰線消去期間（ＶＢＩ）信号を介し
て広告情報が送信される場合には、送信する広告情報の量を最小にすることが望
ましい。少ない送信情報により、情報を受信するテレビジョン・システムは、ま
た、情報を記憶することに少ないメモリを費やす。

。より特定的には、本発明は、広告情報を変更するためにＥＰＧデータベースに
記憶されたデータを利用するシステム及び方法を備えている。それとして、サー
ビス・プロバイダ及び／又は広告主は、地理的場所及び他のユーザ特定情報に係
わりなく全てのテレビ局に単一の広告を送信することができ、かつショーの番組

本発明は、テレビジョン・スケジュール情報を第１のデータベースに記憶し；広
告情報を第２のデータベースに記憶し；変更した広告を形成するためにテレビジ

場合には、詳細な情報に表示される番組に関する通常の詳細は、グリッド・ガイ
ドのものである。更に、強調された番組に関する複数のアイコンをグリッド・ガ
イドに表示することができる。一つのアイコンは、試合が既に始まっているとい
うことをユーザに知らせる。別のアイコンは、専門案内情報の利用可能性を示す
。視聴者は、る及び／又は記録するためにグリッド・ガイドから番組を選択する
ことができる。更に、視聴者は、専門ガイド・アイコンを選択することができる
。スポーツ番組の場合には、専門ガイド・アイコンを選択することにより、例え
ば、試合がグリッド・ガイドの詳細な情報エリアにおいて既に進行していた場合
には試合に対するスコアボードを表示する。試合が将来の時間に対してスケジュ
ールされているならば、専門案内アイコンを選択することにより、例えば、選手
、チームに関する情報、そして多分、試合に関するオッズ(odds)を表示する。

・サービスを使用することができる。例えば、視聴者は、見るためのニュース番
組を選択し、ニュース番組を見ている間に、ニュースのブロードキャスタが宇宙
飛行士を含んでいるイベントを説明する。視聴者は、ニュース案内／データ・サ

・チャネル(Discovery Channel)・プログラムが言及される。視聴者は、ＥＰＧ
に 参照した番組のあらゆる発生を捜し出しかつその番組を記録すべくスケジュ
ールするように命令することができる。一実施例では、ＰＬＵＳ ＣＯＤＥ（プ
ラス・コード）のようなアドレスは、スケジュールされた番組にリンクするか、

間をリンクすることが更に可能である。視聴者は、ニュース・ガイドのニュース
項目を強調しかつ選択することによってその番組を見るか又は記録するためにニ
ュース番組へリンクすることができる。一実施例では、選択したテレビジョン・
ニュース番組は、ＰＩＰウィンドウ又はアド・ウィンドウで現され、イベントに

は、“ｉ”アイコンによって示される。ユーザは、情報(info.)ボタンを押すこ
とによって更なる情報をアクセスすることができる。チャネル・アドは、ダイナ
ミックでありうる。

テレビジョンがセットアップされる毎にそれらが現れるように一般的に“タイム
レス”である。パネル・アド・スペースの一つの使用は、ヘルプ・テキストに対
してである。ユーザにアド・スペースを選択させるヘルプ・テキストは、パネル
・アド、情報(info.)スクリーンの更なる情報をアクセスする方法、及びアドか
らウォッチしかつ記録する(Watch and Record)方法の“チュートリアル（学習）
”としてサーブしうる。
【００４１】 視聴者が最初にＥＰＧにエンターした場合には、ＥＰＧは、アド・ウィンドウ
で表示されるアドのような、フル・スクリーン（全画面）・アドを表示すること
ができる。視聴者は、視聴者がアド・ウィンドウと対話することができる同じ方
法でフル・スクリーン・アドと対話することができる。即ち、視聴者は、ＥＰＧ
に、広告に関連付けられたものが存在するならば、インフォマーシャル又は番組
を記録するか、又はウォッチ・リストに追加すべく命令することができる。
【００４２】 視聴者がテレビジョンをオンにする次の回にチューンされた最初のチャネルと
して最後のチャネルをウォッチするよりも、視聴者によって選択されたチャネル
を自動的にチューンすることができる。一実施例では、視聴者は、ＥＰＧのウォ
ッチ・リスト・ファンクション(Watch List Function)の自動(Automatic)ウォッ
チ・チャネルを示す。別の実施例では、ブロードキャスター（アナウンサー）は
、視聴者がテレビジョンを最初にオンした場合に視聴者がブロードキャスターの
チャネルを最初のウォッチド・チャネルであるべく欲するならばコマンドを入力
（エンター）するためにオン−スクリーン・クエリー（問合せ・質問）を各視聴
者に送る。
【００４３】 アドは、とりわけ、グラフィックス・フィールド、テキスト・フィールド又は
グラフィックスとテキスト・フィールドの組合せをフューチャしうる。一実施例
では、視聴者は、アド及びテレビジョンと対話することができる。例えば、チュ
ーン・イン・アドは、アド・ブロックがそれに関連付けられた番組情報を有する
ものと想定して強調されたアド・ブロックから進行中のショーを視聴者に直接チ
ューンさせる。アドに関連付けられた進行中のショー(in-progress show)は、ボ
タンを押すことによって直接チューンされる。
【００４４】 直接記録アドは、ユーザに強調されたアド・ブロックから将来にオンにすべく
スケジュールされたか又は進行中のショーを記録させる。どのくらい先の将来ま
で直接記録関連ショーが放送されるべくスケジュールされうるかに関して実用的
な制限は存在しない。アドに関連付けられたショーは、アドが強調されている間
に、アクション・ボタンを押すことによって記録される。ユーザは、一度、毎日
、又は毎週記録頻度（回数）を選択しうる。アドから、ユーザは、ショーを記録
スケジュール(Record Schedule)に設置するためにアクション・ボタンを押す。
ショーが現在オンである場合には、アドが強調されている間にアクション・ボタ
ンを押すことによって進行中のショーのレコーディングを許容する。また、ショ
ー・タイトルも、ユーザが記録頻度を毎日又は毎週に変更することを望む場合に
ショーが終るまで記録スケジュールに設置される。
【００４５】 ウォッチ・アドは、アド・スペースで広告された番組(program advertised)か
ら構成されている。広告された番組は、アド・ブロックがそれに関連付けられた
番組情報を有する限りウォッチ・スケジュールに設置されうる。どのくらいの将
来まで関連するショーが放送するためにスケジュールされうるかに関して実用的
な制限は存在しない。ウォッチ・フューチャ(Watch feature)は、それがテレビ
ジョンをそれを記録することよりもショーにチューンするということ以外はレコ
ード・フューチャ(Record feature)とほぼ同じ様に動作する。ユーザがテレビジ
ョンをウォッチングしている（観ている）ならば、チャネルは、ショーが開始し
たときにウォッチ・スケジュールに設置されたショーに自動的に変わる。ウォッ
チ・スケジュールのショーが開始すべくスケジュールされているときにテレビジ
ョンがオフになっているならば、テレビジョンは、オンにされかつ所望のチャネ
ルにチューンされる。
【００４６】 ユーザは、一度、毎日、又は毎週のウォッチ頻度（回数）を選択しうる。アド
から、ユーザは、ウォッチ・スケジュールにショーを設置するためにアクション
・ボタンを押す。ショーが現在オンである場合には、アドを強調している間にア
クション・ボタンを押すことは、ショーに直接チューンすることを結果としても
たらす。また、ショー・タイトルは、ユーザがウォッチ頻度を毎日又は毎週に変
更したい場合にショーが終るまでウォッチ・スケジュールに設置される。
【００４７】 アドは、複数レベルの情報を有しうる。一般に、第１レベル情報は、ユーザ・
アクションなしで画面上に提示されるアド・コピー及び／又はグラフィックスで
ある。これは、パネル及びチャネル・アド・エリアを備えている。一般に、第２
レベル情報は、（広告主によって供給されたならば）ユーザがそれにスクロール
することによってアド・ブロックを強調する場合に自動的に可視化される（“オ
ート−オープン(Auto-Open)”。この二次情報は、パネル・アドが強調される場
合にチャネル・グリッド・エリア全体をカバーする情報(info.)ボックスに提示
される。広告主の判断で設置された、アドの“ｉ”アイコンは、そのアドに対し
て入手（利用）可能なさらなる情報が存在することを示す。第２レベル情報は、
メモリ利用可能性によりテキスト及び／又はグラフィックスでありうる。
【００４８】 一般に、第３レベル情報利用可能性は、（広告主によって供給されたならば）
第２レベル情報画面上の情報(info.)ボタン“ｉ”によって示される。情報(info
.)ボタンを押すことは、この情報をアクセスしかつグリッド・エリア全体をカバ

【００４９】 アド・ブロックは、ダイナミックでありうる。メモリ・パーミッティング、パ
ネル・アド・グラフィックス及び／又はテキスト及び情報ボックス・テキストは
、Ｎ（Ｎはある数字）の異なる図的又はテキスト的実行の制限を通してローテー
トしてＸ（Ｘはある数字）秒毎に変化しうる。一度に表示されるダイナミック・
アドの数を制限するケーパビリティが存在する。
【００５０】 アド継続時間及び開始時間／終了時間は、スケジュールしうるし及び／又はダ
イナミックでありうる。一実施例では、アドは、関連終了時間を伴う所与の開始
時間で表示される。開始と終了の間の時間は、アドの継続時間である。最小継続
時間増分は、一般に６０秒である。一実施例では、アドは、アドの終了時間にな
ったときに自動的に置換されない。アドは、ユーザのアクションが新しい“ハー
ド・ページ”、又はガイドの新しいセクションを現させるときにだけ変化する（
例えば、グリッドからソートに移行する）。
【００５１】 一実施例では、アドは、ローテート（循環）することができる。例えば、異な
るアドは、ユーザがガイドの同じページ／セレクションを入力する毎に現れるこ
とができる。ローテーションに設置されたアドの数に関するハード・リミット（
強固な制限）は存在しない。アドは、ハード・ページ又はスクリーンが最初にア
クセスされたときに最優先のアドが表示される優先順位を割り当てることができ
る。次いで、第２の優先アドは、次にユーザがこのページをビューするときに表
示される、等。優先順位カウンタは、ページ依存性であり、ユーザが三度目に第
１頁をビューした場合には、そのページ上に第３の優先アドをユーザが見るとい

【００５３】 ＥＰＧは、視聴者がＥＰＧにエンターする直前にウォッチしていたテレビジョ
ン・チャネルに表示される広告によりどの広告を表示すべきかを決定することが
できる。即ち、視聴者がＥＰＧにエンターしたときに視聴者がウォッチしていた
チャネルでトヨタの広告を見せていた場合には、ＥＰＧは、ＥＰＧのある部分、
例えば、アド・ウィンドウに相関するトヨタ広告を表示すべく時間を定める（タ
イムする）ことができる。
【００５４】 一実施例では、ＥＰＧは、ＥＰＧによる視聴者のセッションの間中の様々な時
間にどのアドを表示すべきかを決定するために視聴者プロフィール(Viewer Prof
ile)をテストする。ＥＰＧは、広告主の投資及び相関的視聴者のプロフィールを
表現すべくＡｄ（アド）及びＰａｇｅ（ページ）優先順位を割り当てることがで
きる。
【００５５】 グラフィック的にダイナミックなアドは、ｎ（ここでｎは、ある数字である）
の図的又はテキスト的実行を通してローテートしているｘ秒毎（ここでｘは、ｘ
が１．０秒のように小さい、ある数字である）に異なるグラフィックスを一般に

ン・モニター・ディスプレイのアド・ウィンドウの場所までナビゲートするため
にリモート・コントロール・デバイスの矢印／方向性ナビゲーション・キーを押
すことによってアド・ウィンドウを強調する。リモート・コントロール・デバイ
ス・ポインタがオン−スクリーン・テレビジョン・モニター・ディスプレイのア
ド・ウィンドウに配置された場合には、アド・ウィンドウのオン−スクリーン・
ディスプレイが強調される。代替的に、ＥＰＧは、広告されている製品に関する
ビデオ・クリップをビューする機会を視聴者に提供するための機会をインフォマ
ーシャルのプロデューサに提供する。
【００５７】 アド・ウィンドウは、オプショナル的に対話形でありうる。アド・ウィンドウ
に表示されているアドに関連する情報を含んでいるウェブ・サイトのインターネ
ット・アドレスは、ウェブ・サイト・アドレスとして、アイコンとして、又は
更なる対話情報を示しているスタイライズされた“ｉ”のような、他の図的表示
としてアド・ウィンドウに表示することができる。更に、アド・ウィンドウとの
視聴者の対話は、視聴者のプロフィールの一部として記録するためにＥＰＧによ
ってモニター（監視）される。
【００５８】 ＥＰＧは、視聴者が興味があることに関する拡張した製品情報をアクセスする
ための機会を視聴者に提供する。広告時間を購入するコストの理由で、増大する
数の製品の製造業者及びマーケッターは、彼らの製品に関するインフォマーシャ
ルを生成する。放送時間のコストの理由で、多くの製造業者及びマーケッターは
、しばしばノン−プライム・チャネルで、オフ−プライム−タイム・スケジュー
ルにより彼らのインフォマーシャルに対して比較的安い放送時間を購入する。Ｅ
ＰＧは、リアルタイムでウォッチするために視聴者に不都合である、時間に、又
はチャネルで放送されるインフォマーシャルを記録するための機会を視聴者に提
供する。アド・ウィンドウが特定の製品に関する情報を表示するならば、記録ボ
タンを押すことによって、それが将来の時間に対してスケジュールされる範囲ま
で、ＥＰＧにインフォマーシャルを記録すべく命令する。代替的に、視聴者は、
ウォッチ・リスト(Watch List)に対するインフォマーシャルを指定することがで
きる。
【００５９】 ＥＰＧは、ＥＰＧに将来−スケジュールされたテレビジョン番組を記録又はウ
ォッチすべく命令するための更なる機会を視聴者に提供する。アド・ウィンドウ

できる。視聴者が番組を記録することに興味があるならば、視聴者は、ＥＰＧに
将来−スケジュールされたテレビジョン番組を記録すべく命令することができる

組を記録すべく命令するためにリモート・コントロール・デバイスの記録ボタン
を押す。代替的に、視聴者は、ＥＰＧに、ウォッチ・リストに番組を追加すべく
命令することができる。更に、視聴者は、番組に関するビデオ・クリップをビュ
ー（視聴）することができる。
【００６０】 本発明の一実施例では、広告メッセージ及び仮想チャネル・アドのデータベー
スは、視聴者端末のＲＡＭに記憶されるか又は視聴者端末がインターネット接続
を有するならばウェブ・サイトでアクセス可能である。いずれの場合でも、デー
タベースの広告項目は、テレキャスト・テレビジョン番組（放送テレビ番組）に
割り当てられたコード化されたカテゴリー・ラベルに対応するコード化されたカ
テゴリーでラベルが貼られる。（これらは、オン・スクリーン・カテゴリー又は
テーマ・ガイドのプログラムをソートするために用いられるカテゴリーと同じで
あることが好ましい。）テレビジョン番組のカテゴリー・ラベルは、ＥＰＧデー
タベースの一部としてＲＡＭに記憶しかつ、リアルタイム・クロック及びチュー
ナ・セッティングからの情報に基づき適用可能なショー情報パッケージ（Show I
nformation Package(“ＳＩＰ”)）から検索することができる。この情報は、適
用可能なＳＩＰを指す時間及びチャネルを識別する。視聴者がテレビジョン・モ
ードでウォッチしていた最後の番組のカテゴリー・ラベルがＥＰＧデータベース
から検索された後、このラベルは、ＲＡＭに記憶された広告メッセージ及び仮想
チャネル・アドのデータベースの対応するラベルにマッチされる。
【００６１】 ＥＰＧは、ＥＰＧによって表示される広告メッセージの“アジャセント−コン
テント（隣接内容）”カスタマイゼーションに関連して視聴者プロフィール(Vie
wer Profile)を使用する。視聴者プロフィール(Viewer Profile)情報は、視聴者
がＥＰＧ又は関連データ・サービスで現在強調しているコンテントの識別を含む
。この方法を用いて、ＥＰＧは、例えば、視聴者がグリッド・ガイドにおいて現
在強調しているショー、スポーツ・データ・サービスにおいて強調されるスポー
ツ、又はニュース・サービスで強調されるニュースのタイプ（インターナショナ

ウェブへのＥＰＧリンクを通してアクセス可能な、広告のライブラリを含んでい
る、様々な可能な場所から広告を選択することができる。広告は、グラフィック

マイクロプロセッサによって分析される。
【００６３】 例えば、自動車に対する特定の広告は、スポーツ・イベント・テーマに割り当
てられうる。簡単なインプリメンテーションでは、特定のＥＰＧのユーザが規定
（指図）された期間中に他のテーマよりも頻繁にテーマとしてスポーツを選択し
た場合には、この自動車広告は、表示するために選択される。テーマを選択する
ことは、第２レベル・テーマ・スクリーンの選択テーマと一致する番組の、時間
、チャネル、及びタイトルによって、スクリーン・リスティングを提出する。使
用の履歴は、メモリに記憶された最も古いデータを上書きすることによってメモ
リに記録することができる。望ましいならば、より複雑な分析を用いることがで
きる。そこで、選択の頻度（回数）は、古い選択よりも新しい選択を支持すべく
重み付けすることができるか又はテーマは、どの広告を表示するかを決定するた
めに組合せることができる。

ョン番組のクラスに割り当てられる；ＥＰＧの情報ボックスの使用の履歴は、ビ
ジットの頻度、一つのビジットの間に費やされた時間、及び／又は全てのビジッ
トの合計時間により、記録される；情報ボックスは、テレビジョン番組に相関さ
れ、かつ結果は、どの広告を表示するかを決定するために分析される。情報ボッ
クスの代わりに、どの広告を表示すべきかを決定するためにＥＰＧスクリーンの
他のエリアを同じようなファッションでモニターすることができる。それぞれの
場合において、ライブラリの広告は、ユーザの興味に対する広告をより良くター
ゲットするようにモニター・エリアに表示された情報の形式（タイプ）又はサブ
ジェクト（主題）に割り当てられる。
【００６５】 別の実施例では、ライブラリの広告は、また、チャネル及び時間によりテレビ
ジョン番組のクラス又は特定のテレビジョン番組にも割り当てられる；チューナ
は、モニターされる；チャネル及び時間は、テレビジョン番組と相関され、かつ
結果は、どの広告を表示すべきかを決定するために分析される。例えば、人気が
あるバスケットボール・スターによるブランド・ネーム・アスレチック・シュー
ズに対する広告は、バスケットボール番組に割り当てることができる。特定のＥ
ＰＧの視聴者がバスケットボールの試合をウォッチしている間にＥＰＧにエンタ
ーした場合には、シュー広告が表示のために選択される。
【００６６】 別の実施例では、ライブラリの広告は、また、特定のテレビジョン番組又はテ
レビジョン番組のクラスに割り当てられる；“記録−ウォッチ・リスト”にエン
ターされたテレビジョン番組の履歴を記録する；そして、結果は、どの広告を表
示すべきかを決定するために分析される。また、同じＥＰＧ又は相関テレビジョ
ン受像機の複数のユーザ間を識別するためにモニターされたイベントの時間を考
慮に入れることもできる。想定は、ＥＰＧを使用しかつ一日の異なる時間にテレ
ビジョンをウォッチしている人々は、異なる興味を有する−主婦は、朝により多
くＥＰＧを使用しうるし、子供達は、晩（早い夜）にそれを使用しうるし、そし
て勤めている（家の外で働く）男達は、それを日曜日の午後に使用しうるという
ことである。
【００６７】 図２は、テレビジョン・システム内のＥＰＧの機能を起動するためのリモート
・コントローラの例示的実施例である。本発明の動作を記述する目的のために、
リモート・コントローラは、クロックの援助により記述した動作を実行すべくプ
ログラムされるテレビジョン・システムのマイクロプロセッサにＩＲコマンドを
送るということを想定する。リモート・コントローラは、ＥＰＧのカーソルの動
きを制御するための上、下、右、及び左の矢印キーを有する。カーソルは、リモ
ート・コントロールの矢印キーを押すことによってＥＰＧのいずれかのウィンド
ウズ及びタイルズを選択する、即ち強調することができる。強調すること（ハイ
ライティング）は、ウィンドウの回りにボーダーを追加すること又はボーダーが
パーマネントである場合にはボーダーのカラーを変更することによって達成され
る。
【００６８】 テレビジョン番組データは、パケットでテレビジョン・システムによって受信
されかつＥＰＧデータベースに記憶される。パケットは、ＶＢＩ信号を介して送
られかつ信されテレビジョン・システムのマイクロプロセッサによって受信され
る。パケットは、メモリに情報を記憶する方法をシステムに決定させることがで
きるルーティング・データと一緒にテレビジョン番組スケジュール情報を含む。

め設定された時間リスト及びショー情報パッケージを含む。予め設定された時間
リストは、システムの各チャネルに対するテレビジョン番組情報を配置するため
に用いられる。予め設定された時間リストは、現在の日（今日）又は次の日（明
日）に放送される番組情報だけを参照する。

ターは、テレビジョン・プログラミングの４時間ブロックに対するデータを含む

グ情報の２４時間及び次の日に対するプログラミング情報の２４時間を表す。

情報パッケージのアドレスを含む。特定のデータが必要な場合には、システムは
、ポインターを確保するために予め設定された時間リストをまず覗き、次にどこ

テレビジョン・プログラミングの４時間ブロックに対するデータを含む。各４時
間ブロックにおけるショーの数が個々のショーの継続時間に依存するので、ショ
ー情報パッケージ長さは、可変（変数）である。

る各ショーに対する特定のデータである。ブロック３１４によって示される、所
与のショーに対して、以下のフィールドがショー情報パッケージに存在する：複

対する放送時間を特定する；テーマ・フィールド − ショーのタイプに関する情
報を含む；例えば、ショーは、スポーツ・イベント、ニュース番組、又は映画で
ありうる；ＣＣフィールドは、ショーがクローズド・キャプションドであるか否
かを決定する；ステレオ・フィールド − ショーがステレオで放送されるか否か

のエントリは、不定期に(infrequently)変更されかつテレビジョン・ユニットの
場所及び受信するサービスのタイプによって決定される。テレビジョン・ユニッ

うに要求されたときに、セット・アップの間にテレビジョンのメモリにエンター
される。各チャネル・データ・テーブル・エントリは、チャネル及びチャネルに
対するショー・リスト・ハンドル・テーブルへのハンドルに関する情報を含む。
【００８１】 階層構造における次のデータ構造は、図７に示すようなショー・リストである
。ショー・リストは、一般に真夜中ＧＭＴである、開始時間、及びスケジューリ
ングの２４時間を含む。チャネルのスケジュールは、特定の日に対して特定のチ
ャネルによって放送されるべき各ショーに対するショー・スロットにより、ショ
ー・スロットの順序付けられたシーケンスによって与えられる。各スロットは、

スト・ハンドルを増分することによってアクセスされる。ショー・リストは、ち
ょうど終了したその日に対するショー・リストを削除しかつ次の週の同じ日に対
するショー・リストをデータベースに追加することにより真夜中ＧＭＴに毎日更
新される。
【００８３】 スケジュール階層構造における次のデータ構造は、図８に示す、ショー・タイ
トル・エントリ、及び図９に示す、ショー・ディスクリプション・エントリであ
る。所与のショー・スロットに対して、ショー・タイトル・エントリ及びショー
・ディスクリプション・エントリは、スロットに含まれるハンドルを利用してア
クセスされる。ショー・タイトル及びショー・ディスクリプション・エントリは
、ブロックに分けられたメモリ・プールに記憶される。各ショー・タイトルは、
固有（独自）のショー識別番号（ＳＩＤ）によって識別され、かつ各ショー・デ
ィスクリプションは、ヘッド・エンドに割り当てられた固有の番号によって識別
される。ショー・タイトル・ハンドルは、ＳＩＤに基づくものでありかつショー
・タイトル・ハンドルは、ショー・タイトル・ハンドル・テーブルへのオフセッ
トである。特定のショー・タイトル・ハンドルによってアクセスされたショー・
タイトル・テーブルのエントリは、ショー・タイトル・エントリが記憶されるメ
モリ・プールの第１ブロックのアドレスを含む。同様に、ショー・ディスクリプ
ション・ハンドルによってアクセスされたショー・ディスクリプション・ハンド
ル・テーブル・エントリは、ショー・ディスクリプション・エントリが記憶され

ムは、また、パケットでも広告データを受信する。次いで、広告データは、広告
（アド）データベースに記憶される。広告は、一般に将来のテレビジョン番組に

しうるし、かつ将来のプログラミング広告に限定されないということを認識すべ

ンポーネント及び番組コンポーネントを備えている。二つのコンポーネントは、

れたアドに対するＡｄＩＤである。継続時間フィールドは、特定のアドが表示さ
れるべき期間（ピリオド）を示す。ＡｄＩＤは、特定のアドに対するアド・コピ
ー（テキスト及びグラフィックス）をアクセスするために利用される。
【００８７】 スケジュール・コンポーネントに加えて、情報放送システムは、また、番組コ
ンポーネントも送信する。番組コンポーネントは、テレビジョン・システムを広
告されたショーへリンクさせる。図１１は、本発明の一実施例による番組コンポ
ーネントを示す。図１１に示すように、番組コンポーネントは、ＡｄＩＤ、ガイ
ド・チャネル(Guide Channel)、開始時間(Start Time)、及び継続時間(Duration
)を含む。ＡｄＩＤは、ガイド・チャネル、開始時間、及び継続時間フィールド
を特定の広告に関連付けさせる。テレビジョン・システムは、そのチャネルに対

時間及び継続時間フィールドは、チャネルによって放送された特定の番組を見付

告に関連付けられる、等。それゆえに、この代替実施例によれば、情報放送シス
テムは、対応するＡｄＩＤｓを送信する必要がない。

インターのマップを捜し出すために用いられ、各ポインターは、その特定のチャ
ネルに対するテレビジョン・プログラミングの４時間ブロックに対するデータを
含むショー情報パッケージに対応している。継続時間フィールドは、システムに
ショー情報パッケージ内の特定の番組情報を検索させる。特定の番組が捜し出さ
れた場合には、テレビジョン・システムは、対応する広告のプレースホルダーに
情報を挿入するために必要な値を検索する。例えば、番組ディスクリプションは
、ショー情報パッケージから検索されかつアド内の番組ディスクリプション・プ
レースホルダーに挿入されうる。更に、番組が放送される時間は、検索されうる
しかつ放送時間プレースホルダーに挿入されうる。
【００９２】 一実施例によれば、ＥＰＧデータベースは、週全体に対するプログラミング情
報を含む。この場合には、ガイド・チャネルは、現在の日に対する特定のチャネ
ルに対するショーリストへのハンドルを伴うショーリスト・ハンドル・テーブル
を捜し出すために用いられる。開始時間及び継続時間フィールドは、適当なショ
ー・ディスクリプション・エントリを捜し出すために用いられる。
【００９３】 本発明の別の実施例では、番組コンポーネントは、パケットとして送られない
が、しかしスケジューリング・コンポーネントの広告により送信された情報に基
づきテレビジョン・システム内に生成される。この実施例によれば、情報放送シ
ステムは、サーチされた番組のタイトル、ショーが放送される時間範囲、及び番
組を放送しているネットワーク・ステーションを見付けるためのネットワーク・
ステーション・インジケータを、スケジューリング・コンポーネントと共に送信
する。例えば、アドは、“木曜日の夜にＮＢＣショー‘フレンズ(Friends)’へ
リンスする”ための命令を含みうる。この情報により、テレビジョン・システム
は、ショー‘フレンズ(Friends)’に対してＥＰＧデータベースをサーチし、か
つ対応するアドに対する番組コンポーネントを生成する。このように、複数のＮ
ＢＣ系列にチューンすることが可能なテレビジョン・システムは、テレビジョン
・システムが実際にチューンされるＮＢＣ系列のチャネルを選択する。
【００９４】 本発明は、特定の図示された実施例に関して記述されたが、本発明の技術分野
に係わる当業者は、本発明の精神から逸脱するものではない変形を工夫すること
に困難がないであろう。例えば、図示した実施例は、将来のテレビジョン番組の
広告に対する時間及び番組ディスクリプションを変更することに関して記述され
ているが、望ましいならば他のタイプの広告情報が変更されうるということが理
解されるであろう。
【００９５】 更に、変更された広告は、将来のテレビジョン番組に関するばかりでなく、あ
らゆるタイプの製品又はサービスに対する広告でありうる。価格、電話番号、販
売地点（ポイント・オブ・セールス）、ウェブ・サイト・アドレス、プロモーシ

また、ＥＰＧデータベースに記憶された情報に基づき変更されうる。例えば、製

    って、該命令がイクロプロセッサによって実行される場合に、当該マイクロプロ
    セッサに、 テレビジョン・スケジュール情報を第１のデータベースに記憶する段階； 広告情報を第２のデータベースに記憶する段階； 変更した広告を形成するために前記第１のデータベースからの前記テレビジョ
    ン・スケジュール情報の一部を前記広告情報の一部に組込む段階；及び 前記変更した広告を画面に表示する段階 を実行させることを特徴とするコンピュータ読取り可能媒体。
