Abstract
ブフィールドコードを、サブフィールドの実際の輝度に
基づくメタコードによって置換する方法を提供する。 【解決手段】 マトリクス表示画面上に表示される画像
のグレイスケールの忠実表現を改善する方法であって、
a)所与のピークホワイトレベルに対し、複数のサブフ
ィールドに、サブフィールドの重み付けに対応する数の
維持パルスを分配する段階と、b)サブフィールドコー
ドを輝度コードにマッピングする段階と、c)輝度コー
ドを一定の順序に並べ替える段階と、d)ビデオレベル
を利用可能な輝度コードのマッピングする段階と、e)
輝度の中間レベルを達成するようビデオレベルを処理す
る段階と、f)輝度コードを出力サブフィールドコード
のマッピンする段階を含む。この方法は、プラズマディ
スプレイパネル(PDP)に使用される。
Description

(PDP)といったマトリクス表示画面、又は、発光の
デューティサイクル変調(PWM、即ち、パルス幅変
調)の原理に基づいた他の表示装置に表示される画像の
グレイスケールの忠実表現(fidelity portrayal)を改
善する方法に係る。本発明は更に、そのような方法を実
行する装置に関する。

パネルは、ガスで満たされる空間を形成するよう互いに
密閉される2つの絶縁板によって構成される。空間の中
にリブが設けられ、「オン」又は「オフ」でしかありえ
ない放電セルのマトリクスアレイが形成される。更に、
グレイレベルが発光のアナログ制御によって表現される
CRT(カラー陰極線管)又はLCD(液晶ディスプレ
イ)といった他のディスプレイとは異なり、PDPは、
フレーム毎の光パルス数を変えることによりグレイレベ
ルを制御する。これらの光パルスは、維持パルスとして
知られる。時間変調は、眼の時間応答に相当する期間の
間に、眼によって統合される。

の8つのサブ期間の組合せによって、256の異なるグ
レイレベルを形成することが可能である。従って、例え
ば、グレイレベル92は、対応するデジタルコードワー
ド00111010=4+8+16+64を有すること
となる。より具体的には、周知のプラズマディスプレイ
技術では、各サブフィールドSFは以下を含む時間的な
期間である。即ち、 ‐プラズマセルが高電圧によって励起状態、又は、低電
圧によってニュートラル状態にされる、固定長の書込み
/アドレス期間。 ‐サブフィールドの重み付けに依存する維持期間。等し
い振幅及び等しい継続時間を有する短電圧パルス又は維
持パルスによってガス放電が行われる。パルスの数は、
サブフィールドの重み付けに対応する。 ‐セルの電荷が消光される、固定長の消去期間。

サブフィールドの書込み及び消去処理も、その重み付け
に関係なく各ビットサブフィールドに同様に付加される
幾らかの輝度を生成するという事実によって複雑さが増
す。従って、PDPパネルはやや非線形である。即ち、
100の維持パルスが、1つの維持パルスの100倍の
輝度をもたらす訳ではない。

が生成してしまう。

ベル間で輝度線形補間を、表示値の空間的及び時間的な
変更によって行うことができるよう処理される。そのた
めには、ビデオレベルは、ディザリングされて、整数精
度となるよう切り捨てられる。それにより、2つの連続
する輝度値の間にある輝度分解能の分数部が表現され得
る。

50=2.00 cd m-2 この段階において、ビデオレベルはディザリングされて
整数の精度となるよう切り捨てられる。この場合、段階
d)のマッピングは、1,024のエントリと11ビッ
トを有するルックアップテーブルを用いて行われる。こ
のルックアップテーブルから利用可能である11ビット
は、8ビットの整数分解能と3ビットの分数分解能に対
応する。3ビットの分数分解能には3ビットのディザリ
ングが加えられて、切り捨てられる。ディザリング法は
この段階において使用され、量子化ノイズを知覚しにく
くする。このノイズは、表示される輝度がパルス数に対
し線形ではあるが、このノイズに対する眼の応答及びそ
の感度は線形ではないという事実に起因するものであ
る。
敏感に反応するので、量子化誤差は、暗い領域において
はかなり顕著となる。更に、PDPにおいて必要である
デガンマ(degamma)機能は、ビデオの暗い領域におけ
る量子化ノイズを増加し、結果として、知覚可能な程の
分解能の欠落がもたらされる。幾つかのディザリング方
法を本発明の枠内において使用することができる。例え
ば、同一出願人によるEP出願第00250099.9
に記載される3Dディザリング方法を使用することがで
きる。

であってよい。平均出力測定ユニット11は、平均出力
値APを計算し、その値をピーク・ホワイト・エンハン
スメント、即ち、PWE制御ブロック12に送る。例え
ば、1つの画像の平均出力値は、全てのR、G、及び、
Bのデータストリームの画素値を合計し、その結果を、
画素値の数に3を乗算したもので割ることによって単純
に計算される。制御ブロック12は、内部の出力レベル
モード表を参照して、他の処理ブロックのための、選択
されたモード制御信号を直接生成する。制御ブロック
は、使用されるべき維持表と使用されるべきメタコード
を選択する。即ち、約120の維持パルスから1,20
0の維持パルスまでの出力レベルの全範囲に必要な25
6のメタコードに対応する8ビットで符号化されるデー
タMC[7,0]を選択する。
モリ回路14及びシリアル/パラレル変換回路14も制
御する。より具体的には、制御ブロック12は、回路1
4の第1のフレームメモリへのRGB画素データの書込
みを、WR信号によって制御し、回路15の第2のフレ
ームメモリからのRGBサブフィールドデータの読出し
を、RD信号によって制御する。RGBサブフィールド
データSF−R、SF−G、及び、SF−Bは、2フレ
ームメモリ回路14から、PWE制御回路12からのS
P信号により制御されるシリアル/パラレル変換回路1
5に送られる。最後に、PWE制御回路12は、PDP
ドライバ回路16、17を制御するのに必要なSCAN
(走査)パルス及びSUSTAIN(維持)パルスを生
成する。
ムメモリが必要とされる。データは、1つのフレームメ
モリに画素毎に書込まれるが、もう1つのフレームメモ
リからサブフィールド毎に読出しされる。完全な第1の
サブフィールドを読出しするには、1つのフレームが既
にメモリ内になければならない。実際の実施では、2つ
の完全なフレームメモリが存在する。そして、1つのフ
レームメモリに書込まれている間、もう1つのフレーム
メモリは読出しされる。このようにして、間違ったデー
タが読出しされることを防ぐ。後述するように、費用最
適化アーキテクチャでは、2つのフレームメモリは、同
一のSDRAMメモリIC上に配置され、2つのフレー
ムへのアクセスは時間的に多重化される。

ればならないので、1フレームの遅延は、信号処理経路
でも発生するからである。これは、PWE制御回路12
によって生成される維持パルスの数は、画像のコンテン
ツに正確に適応されることを意味する。補正することの
できない唯一のエラーは、モードスイッチ、即ち、画像
の出力コンテンツの変更があったときに間違ったメタコ
ードLUTを使用することである。PCT特許出願WO
00/46782に説明されるように、モードスイッチ
の数は、例えば、画像の出力変動を除去するヒステリシ
ス回路を付加することによって限定される。また、多く
のモードスイッチは、連続モードである。連続モードの
メタコードは類似しており、というのは、サブフィール
ド維持の数が類似しているからであり、従って、多くの
生じたエラーは、人間の視聴者には認知されない。

トは、上述した方法で説明したように、10ビットの入
力ビデオ分解能を取り扱うための1,024×11ビッ
トを含む第1のルックアップテーブル130を含む。3
つの色成分の夫々は、同一のルックアップテーブルで符
号化される。第1のルックアップテーブル130は、符
号化処理の段階d)を行うために使用される。第1のル
ックアップテーブル130は、PWE制御回路12から
のMC値によって制御される。第1のルックアップテー
ブル130の出力において、11ビットのビデオ信号が
得られる。利用可能な11ビットは、8ビットの整数分
解能と3ビットの分数分解能に相当する。次に、11ビ
ットのビデオ信号YA[10−0]が回路131に送ら
れる。この回路131では、3ビットの分数分解能に、
ディザリング回路132によって送られる3ビットのデ
ィザリングが加えられ、その後、切り捨てられる。
00250099.9に記載されるような3Dチェスパ
ターンディザリングブロックであってよい。他のディザ
リングパターンも使用可能である。回路131は、上述
した方法における段階e)を実施するよう使用される。
0]は、256×16ビットを含む第2のルックアップ
テーブル133に送られる。第2のルックアップテーブ
ル1333は、上述した方法の段階e)を実施するよう

クアップテーブルの寸法が大きいことであり、これは実
施するのに費用がかかってしまう。実際に、上述される
ビット幅を有する単一のメタコードの実施には、15,
360ビットのLUTが必要となる。256の離散的な
コードが実施される場合、3.93メガビットのLUT
データが必要となる。

PROM回路21に格納され、制御部20によってビッ
ト毎に読出しすることができる。通常の動作では、各フ
レームの終わりにおいて、新しいLUTデータが制御部
によってダウンロードされなければならない。この間、
サブフィールド符号化は中断されなければならない。外
部EPROMへのアクセスは逐次的なので、かなり遅
く、一部のビデオラインが失われる場合がある。これは
許容される。
能は、要求されるビデオメモリの2フレームを格納する
ことである。回路22の容量は、通常、これら2つのフ
レームメモリを格納するのに最小限必要な容量よりも大
きい。これは、メモリの容量は、常に、2の累乗、即
ち、64メガビット、128メガビット、256メガビ
ット等に相当するからである。冗長なメモリ空間は、完
全なメタコードルックアップテーブルを格納するのに十
分過ぎるほどである。
ーアップの際に、全てのルックアップテーブルデータを
空いているSDRAMアドレス空間に転送することであ
る。パワーアップの際、LUTデータは、SCLKピン
及びSDATAピンを用いて外部EPROMから逐次読
出しされる。その後、プラズマ制御部が、垂直帰線消去
の間に各フレームの終わりにおいて、画像出力と次のフ
レームに必要なメタコードを計算する。新しいコードが
決定されると、制御部はSDRAMから要求されるデー
タを要求し、要求されたテーブルデータを内部のサブフ
ィールド符号化ブロックにロードする。このアクセスは
非常に速い。というのは、垂直帰線消去期間の間に、S
DRAMにサブフィールドデータが書込まれる又は読出
しされる必要がなく、且つ、SDRAMの帯域幅は大き
いからである。

Claims (13)
- 【請求項1】 1フレーム当りの、維持パルスと呼ばれ
る光パルスの数を変えることによって得られるグレイレ
ベルとして、表示装置上に表示される画像のグレイスケ
ールの忠実表現を改善する方法であって、 a)所与のピークホワイトレベルに対し、サブフィール
ドの重み付けに対応する数の上記維持パルスを、複数の
サブフィールドに分配する段階と、 b)サブフィールドコードを輝度コードにマッピングす
る段階と、 c)上記輝度コードを一定の順序に並び替える段階と、 d)ビデオレベルを利用可能な輝度コードにマッピング
する段階と、 e)輝度の中間レベルを達成するよう上記ビデオレベル
を処理する段階と、 f)上記輝度コードを出力サブフィールドコードにマッ
ピングする段階とを含む方法。 - 【請求項2】 上記段階e)において、上記ビデオレベ
ルは、上記利用可能な輝度レベル間の輝度線形補間を、
表示値の空間的及び時間的変化によって行うよう処理さ
れる請求項1記載の方法。 - 【請求項3】 上記利用可能な輝度レベル間の上記輝度
線形補間は、上記ビデオレベルのディザリング及び整数
精度にする切り捨てを用いて行われる請求項2記載の方
法。 - 【請求項4】 上記サブフィールドコードの上記輝度コ
ードへのマッピングは、サブフィールド維持輝度モデル
を用いて行われる請求項1記載の方法。 - 【請求項5】 上記サブフィールドコードの上記輝度コ
ードへのマッピングは、上記サブフィールドの輝度値を
用いて行われる請求項1記載の方法。 - 【請求項6】 上記輝度コードの並べ替えは、輝度値が
上がるように行われる請求項1記載の方法。 - 【請求項7】 一部のサブフィールドコードが略同一の
輝度コードを生成する場合、一部のサブフィールドコー
ドは省略される請求項6記載の方法。 - 【請求項8】 上記段階d)において、上記輝度コード
へのマッピングは、分数精度で行われる請求項1記載の
方法。 - 【請求項9】 上記段階a)乃至f)は、全ての出力レ
ベルモードに対し繰り返される請求項1記載の方法。 - 【請求項10】 請求項1に記載する方法を実行する装
置であって、 ビデオデータの平均出力値を計算する画像平均出力測定
回路と、 出力レベルモード表を含み、上記平均出力測定回路から
与えられる上記平均出力値に応じて要求される出力レベ
ルモードを選択する制御ユニットと、 少なくとも、ビデオレベルを利用可能な輝度コードのマ
ッピングする段階と輝度の中間レベルを達成するよう上
記ビデオレベルを処理する段階とを実施するメタコード
・サブフィールド符号化ユニットとを含み、 上記メタコード・サブフィールド符号化ユニットは、上
記制御ユニットによって制御される装置。 - 【請求項11】 上記メタコード・サブフィールド符号
化ユニットは、2つのルックアップテーブルブロックを
含む請求項10記載の装置。 - 【請求項12】 上記ルックアップテーブルブロック
は、上記制御ユニットによってビット毎に逐次読出し可
能であるEEPROMメモリによって実現される請求項
11記載の装置。 - 【請求項13】 上記制御ユニットは、プラズマディス
プレイパネルを制御する請求項10記載の装置。
