5ミクロンの厚さのπセルに製造される。1.8ボルト
以上が印加されると、V状態が異方性突起の領域から成
長して、ディスプレイの残りを覆うことが観察された。

およびコントラスト比が、最優先でない場合には、突起
は完全にアクティブ領域内に位置し得る。

- 【請求項1】 ネマチック液晶と、該液晶にわたって電
圧を印加する電圧手段と、それぞれアラインメント層が
設けられた2枚の基板とを含む液晶デバイスであって、 該液晶は、該2枚の基板の間に挟まれ、 該ネマチック液晶は、少なくとも1つの動作状態、およ
び少なくとも1つの非動作状態にされ、 該アラインメント層の少なくとも1つには、異方性材料
で形成される複数の表面突起が設けられる、液晶デバイ
ス。 - 【請求項2】 前記突起が、前記液晶の厚さの少なくと
も10%の高さである、請求項1に記載の液晶デバイ
ス。 - 【請求項3】 前記突起が、前記液晶の厚さの少なくと
も20%の高さである、請求項2に記載の液晶デバイ
ス。 - 【請求項4】 前記突起が、前記液晶の厚さの実質的に
50%の高さである、請求項3に記載の液晶デバイス。 - 【請求項5】 前記突起の少なくとも一部が、前記電圧
が閾値を超える場合に、前記液晶を前記非動作状態か
ら、前記動作状態を核形成させる、請求項1に記載の液
晶デバイス。 - 【請求項6】 前記突起の少なくとも一部が、前記動作
状態を、前記非動作状態、または他の動作状態から隔離
される、請求項1に記載の液晶デバイス。 - 【請求項7】 前記液晶が、それぞれアクティブ領域を
有する複数のピクセルに分割され、該ピクセルのそれぞ
れの該アクティブ領域が、前記突起の少なくとも1つを
含むか、オーバーラップするか、あるいは、隣接するか
もしくは近傍に位置し、核形成が該アクティブ領域内で
起こる、請求項1に記載の液晶デバイス。 - 【請求項8】 前記液晶が複数のピクセルに分割され、
該ピクセルのそれぞれが、前記突起の少なくとも1つに
よって囲まれ、該ピクセルが隔離される、請求項1に記
載の液晶デバイス。 - 【請求項9】 前記ネマチック液晶が、πセルである、
請求項1に記載の液晶デバイス。 - 【請求項10】 前記ネマチック液晶は、負のπセルま
たはスプレーベンドデバイス(SBD)である、請求項
1に記載の液晶デバイス。 - 【請求項11】 前記ネマチック液晶は、双安定ねじれ
ネマチック(BTN)である、請求項1に記載の液晶デ
バイス。 - 【請求項12】 前記突起の少なくとも1つが、ねじら
れた異方性突起である、請求項1に記載の液晶デバイ
ス。 - 【請求項13】 前記突起の少なくとも1つが、傾けら
れた異方性突起である、請求項1に記載の液晶デバイ
ス。 - 【請求項14】 前記突起の少なくとも1つが、傾けら
れ、ねじられた異方性突起である、請求項1に記載の液
晶デバイス。 - 【請求項15】 前記異方性突起が、重合化反応性メソ
ゲンから形成される、請求項1に記載の液晶デバイス。 - 【請求項16】 前記動作状態と非動作状態が、互い
に、位相幾何学的に区別される、請求項1に記載の液晶
デバイス。 - 【請求項17】 前記電圧が実質的に0である場合に、
前記液晶の異なる領域は、第1および第2の非動作状態
にあり、該第1の非動作状態は、前記異方性突起によっ
て安定化される、請求項1に記載の液晶デバイス。 - 【請求項18】 前記第1および第2の非動作状態は、
それぞれ、T状態およびH状態である、請求項17に記
載の液晶デバイス。 - 【請求項19】 前記第1の非動作状態は、前記動作状
態と同じ状態である、請求項17に記載の液晶デバイ
ス。 - 【請求項20】 請求項1に記載の液晶デバイスを生成
する方法であって、前記基板のうちの1枚の上に前記反
応性メソゲン層を形成する工程と、マスクを通して該層
を照射することによって、該層を硬化して、該基板のう
ちの1枚を異方性突起でコーティングする工程と、ネマ
チック液晶材料を2枚の該基板の間に挟んで液晶セルを
形成する工程とを包含する、方法。 - 【請求項21】 前記反応性メソゲン層は、CB15で
ドーピングされたRM257から形成される、請求項2
0に記載の方法。 - 【請求項22】 前記反応性メソゲン層は、RM308
が混合されたRM257から形成される、請求項20に
