Abstract

[Also in Division C1] Decorated ceramic ware is produced by (1) applying to the unglazed ceramic ware a transfer material comprising a temporary support sheet, a decoration layer and a cold-working pressuresensitive adhesive layer, the decoration layer being a unitary layer or a layer made up of a carrier film on which the decoration is applied, (2) stripping off the temporary support sheet and (3) applying a glaze layer by spraying or metering on to the ware and on to the decoration applied thereto a dispersion of the solid ingredients of the glaze in a liquid medium capable of wetting the decoration or by applying the liquid medium and then the solid ingredients as a dry powder, and thereafter firing the coated ware to fuse the glaze thereon. The temporary support sheet may be paper surface treated with silicone or a Werner complex formed with a long chain fatty acid, plastics film, e.g. polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, styrenebutadiene copolymer, polyethylene terephthalate, a vinyl polymer or a cellulose derivative. The carrier film may be (a) (if the glaze is applied from organic liquid) a polymer of acrylic/methacrylic acid ester, ethyl cellulose, or (b) (if the glaze is applied from aqueous medium) polyvinyl alcohol, methyl cellulose, gelatine or a mixture of ethyl cellulose or hydroxy propyl cellulose. Inks used for the decoration layer may have an acrylic resin base. Preferred pressure sensitive adhesives are those based on acrylic resins. [GB1235928A]
