Abstract

1327847 Laminates MINNESOTA MINING & MFG CO 20 July 1971 [20 July 1970] 34077/71 Heading B5N [Also in Division B2] A sheet material has a layer 3 of a waterinsoluble pressure sensitive adhesive between a backing sheet 2 and another layer 4 comprising at least 0À1 grain per 24 square inches of a tackfree water soluble material. The backing sheet is preferably a transparent film e.g. of biaxially oriented polyethylene terephthalate rendered translucent either by the incorporation therein of a metal oxide or dye or by the provision of a metal layer formed on the surface of the film contacting the adhesive layer. The metal layer e.g. of aluminium may be applied by vapour deposition and may be coated prior to the application of the pressure-sensitive adhesive by a barrier coating and a primer coating. The pressure sensitive adhesive may be an isooctyl acrylate-acrylamide copolymer, a polyvinyl ethyl ether or a vinyl acetate acrylate copolymer. The water soluble layer which may be applied by direct or transfer coating is preferably incompatible with the pressure-sensitive adhesive and may comprise a vinyl ether-maleic acid copolymer or an ammonium salt thereof, a thermoplastic ethylene oxide polymer, methyl cellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, casein, cooked starch or hide glue. The barrier layer may comprise a U.V.-stabilized ethylene-terephthalate-ethylene isophthalate copolymer. The primer coating may comprise a mixture of an iso-octyl acrylatevinyl acetate-acrylic acid terpolymer, polymethyl methacrylate and a phenolic resin. A product of the invention may be applied to a glass sheet e.g. a window pane to form thereon a moisture resistant solar control film by wetting the product with water, positioning it on a window pane, squeegeeing to remove excess water and allowing the final product to dry. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 1,253,682 and 1,254,989.
