Abstract

A window 20 comprising a frame 21 surrounding a window glass unit 10 in the form of at least one single glazed double glazed or multiglazed unit and at least the external surfaces of the window glass unit are covered by a protective surface engaging covering 11. In use, the protective coverings are retained during construction work and are removed only when construction work has been completed. The protective covering is preferably a shrink wrap plastics sheeting and preferably the entire window glass unit is encased. As the protective sheeting is in surface contact with the glass, it is not vulnerable to accidental or deliberate piercing or tearing. The covering can be removed by cutting it along the border of the frame if necessary and peeling it off. <IMAGE>

Description

WINDOWS This invention relates to windows, and in particular to windows for installation into a building under construction, and to glass units for glazing into the window frames, such windows are now normally double glazed windows but the invention applies equally to single glazing and to triple glazing.
It is common practice, for security purposes, to install windows in buildings under construction, but a problem caused by this practice is damage to the surface of the glass on some at least of the windows, by scoring and scratching caused by bricklayers, plasterers and roughcasters during the course of their work. As a result, it is not unusual to have to replace some windows at the end of the construction, thus adding time, labour and expense to the costs.
An object of this invention is to obviate or mitigate the aforementioned disadvantage.
According to one aspect of the present invention, there is provided window glass unit in the form of a single glazed, double glazed or multi-glazed units, at least the external surfaces of said window glass units being covered by a protective surface-engaging covering.
According to another aspect of the present invention there is provided a window comprising a frame surrounding window glass unit in the form of at least one single glazed, double glazed or multi-glazed units, at least the external surfaces of the window glass unit being covered by a protective surface engaging covering.
The covering can be removed by cutting it along the border of the window frame, if necessary, and peeling it off.
The covering will not of course prevent accidental or deliberate breakage of the glass but will protect the glass from scratching and scoring.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described, in which: Fig 1 is a perspective view of a single glazed window glass unit according to one aspect of the invention; Fig 2 is a perspective view of a double glazed window glass unit; and Fig 3 is a perspective view to a larger scale, of the double glazed window glass unit in a window according to another aspect of the invention.
Referring to the drawings, a window glass unit 10 is provided encased in a shrink wrap plastics material 11 which is in surface contact with the external faces 12 of the glass. The material is preferably a low tack poly film so that it adheres weakly to the glass.
In Fig. 1 the window glass unit consists of one pane of glass 13. In Fig. 2 the window glass unit comprises two panes 14, 15, secured together by a mastic seal surround 16 and spacer bars (not shown).
Window glass units 10 as described are supplied for glazing into window frames and Fig. 3 illustrates one such window 20 omitted, which comprises a double glazed window unit 10 contained in a surrounding frame 21 of timber (as in this embodiment), aluminium or UPVC, one vertical stile being omitted.
The protective shrink wrap material is retained as part of the completed window and is only removed when construction work has been completed. Thus, the protective material protects the glass from damage by scratching or scoring commonly caused by building materials.
In a modification, the protective coating is applied only to the outer faces of the glass units. This may be done before the glass is located in its frame either by the glass manufacturer or the window manufacturer, or after the window has been made. The protective covering may cover the entire surface of the glass, so that a marginal portion is retained within the frame when the major portion is cut and peeled off, or it may cover all but the marginal portion located within the frame so that the entire protective covering is subsequently peeled off.
