Abstract
A flexible plastics sheet is coated by vapour deposition with a thin metallic film of e.g. aluminium, brass, tin, silver or gold to form a transparent and reflective covering for glass surfaces.ALSO:A sheet material useful as a transparent reflective covering for glass surfaces comprises a flexible transparent film having deposited thereon, e.g. by vapour deposition, a thin layer of a metal, e.g. Al, Sn, Au or Ag or brass whereby at least 50% of the sun's radiation in the I/R and U/V regions are reflected while the transmittancy of the film to the visible portion of the spectrum is not reduced by more than 50%, and having on either side an adhesive layer whereby the structure may be attached to a glass surface. Optionally, the metallized surface may be coated with a protective elastomeric layer e.g. of butadieneacrylonitrile which itself may be coated with a coloured layer comprising a coloured, lightstable pigment in a lacquer vehicle, e.g. of nitrocellulose-polybutyl methacrylate. The adhesive may be water-activatable e.g. a casein or polyvinyl alcohol. The base film may be polyethylene terephthalate (preferred), rigid P.V.C., polyethylene, polypropylene, cellulose acetate, cellulose acetate butyrate or polystyrene.
