Abstract
819,573. Coated foils. COX, S. W. Feb. 7, 1956 [Feb. 7, 1955], No. 3596/55. Class 140. [Also in Groups X and XVI] A coated foil comprises a flexible base and a layer coated uniformly thereon comprising a binder, which consists of or comprises a thermosetting resin, and a powder or fine granular substance mixed therein, the nature of the binder and the proportions of the substance mixed therein being such that the substance can be transferred in the form of a pattern or design by locally applied pressure. The coated foil may comprise successive coatings each including a thermosetting resin binder and different powder or granular substances. The flexible base, which may consist of regenerated cellulose or a paper, e.g. glassine or a tough or glazed transparent paper, may be coated with a wax layer, e.g. carnauba, ceresine or yellow beeswax, prior to coating with a fluid mixture of the binder and powder or granular substance, and optionally a catalyst or other hardening promotion substance such as p-toluene sulphonic acid, which may be dissolved in a solvent for the resin, e.g. ethyl alcohol or hydrocarbon solvents. The coated foil may comprise a flexible foil which may have a coating of a ceramic vitreous fluxing medium, a further coating with a mixture of a thermosetting resin and a ceramic colour or other powder usable for pottery decoration, and may then be overcoated with a mixture of a glaze and a ceramic body composition. The thermosetting resin may be a phenol-, cresylic- or urea-formaldehyde resin, or an oil-modified alkyd resin. The powder or granular substance may be a ceramic colour, acid etching resist, metal powder, metallic compound, e.g. metal oxide capable of being converted into a metal powder, pigment or dyestuff. The coated foil may be further coated with a film-forming material containing a sticky plasticiser or a pressure sensitive adhesive. A transfer may be produced (i) by applying the coated foil against a receiving material having a pattern in tacky varnish, subjecting the assembled layers to uniform pressure and removing the coated foil to leave an adherent layer of powder or granular substance upon said varnish; (ii) applying the coated foil against a receiving material, which may have a heat softenable surface, e.g. of gum arabic, nitrocellulose, cellulose acetate, and localized pressure applied, e.g. by pen, stylus, etched, engraved or intaglio dies, at room or elevated temperatures, to transfer a reproduction pattern to said receiving material and thereafter stripping off the coated foil; (iii) placing the coated foil and the receiving material in facial contact with a surface pattern and subjecting the assembled layers to uniform pressure; (iv) applying the coated foil, after the transfer of the impression, to a second receiving surface and subjecting the assembly to uniform pressure to transfer the residue of the coating thereto as a tone reversed copy. The receiving material may have a paper backing, e.g. carbonizing tissue, which may be coated with a water-soluble wax-like material, e.g. polyethylene glycol of molecular weight not less than 6000, and may be further coated with a film forming material, e.g. nitrocellulose, cellulose acetate, methyl methacrylate polythene containing a small proportion of a sticky plasticiser or water-resistant material to form a layer which may be sufficiently thick to be adaptable to be slid into position on the article to be treated. Specification 812,814 is referred to.
